I was in St Peter`s church hall in Woolton whilst on my first visit to Liverpool in August and there is a beautiful painting on the wall depicting John and Paul`s introduction and the actual spot where they met is marked by markers bearing their initials.
In his tribute song to John, 'Here Today' Paul says, "What about the time we met, well I suppose that you could say that we were playing hard to get" This refers to the fact John didn't ask Paul to join the group right away. He was a bit intimidated by how good Paul was. And after all, John was the leader and the star and singer up to that point. So he waited a while and told his friend Pete Shotten and Ivan Vaughn to ask Paul to join. This was typical John. This way HE didn't have to do it face to face to avoid embarrassment if Paul said no. Paul played hard to get because when asked by Pete to join he told him he'd like to think on it for a bit. Both were playing hard to get even though Paul really wanted to join right away and John really wanted him right away, they both made each other wait. Another line in Paul's tribute song 'Here Today" to John, was "Remember the night we cried because there wasn't any reason left to keep it all inside". This was when they were both in a hotel room in a rain storm and got drunk and started telling each other how much they love each other. This never happened before. John got very drunk and started crying and so did Paul. It was the fact John and Paul were thinking about their mother's that had died very young in their lives. That was the bond between them. And that night they both let the pain out in tears. Very very unlike John and Paul to show that much emotion.

Yes John told Ivan Vaughn that he wanted Paul in the band but Paul heard nothing for two weeks and thought he’d flunked the audition. That was until Pete Shotton bumped into Paul and Paul asked if he’d failed the audition and Pete said no and he was in.
This was a GREAT scene! I think the coolest thing ever in life would have been to have seen actual original footage of this first official introduction of Paul to John. video camera and cellphone popularity came a few decades too late IMHO.
They portrayed this scenario pretty accurately. You could see the rest of the Quarry Men behind John basically crapping their pants. Paul was too good for them, so either John was going to quit and go with Paul, or the others would all eventually be fired. Oh to have been a fly on the wall in that room, that day, that moment. Quite possibly the most important moment of the entire 20th century.
To be fair, though, this meeting was rather condensed for this film. Per Mark Lewisohn, Ivan and Paul actually hung out with The Quarry Men for much of the afternoon between the earlier daytime performance and their indoor evening performance. Most of the hangout was spent chatting about typical teen boy things. Paul's playing was merely a small segment of that hangout.
