The Cub community is about to discover what we in the Zenith community have known for a long time. We fly nose wheel aircraft which regularly outperform tail wheel aircraft on both takeoff and landing. That said, I still fly a Maule occasionally, because I'll always like a tail wheel.

It all comes down to the pilot, I've seen 170's takeoff and land shorter than cubs and I've seen cubs take off and land longer than 172's. A good pilot in a good airplane can outperform a mediocre pilot in the best airplane. For people saying nosewheels will outperform tailwheels because of their natural AoA I have two things to say. 1: You're wrong, and 2: tail-up-taxi.

As a 180 guy this Cub will bring a much needed safety factor into the flying community, most pilots today are not trained in tail wheel planes, I was due to my father owning a 180, most are piper and Cessna tricycle gear, so id assume there would be some training time in the cub but not the added time of training for a tailwheel indorsement.personally I LOVE IT

Some say it's a Cub with Training wheels; some say it's the answer to a question that nobody asked.
    Me?
It's an answer to my prayers. To heck with the naysayers...it's half a TriPacer. It's a gift. Let's face it, in most entry level GA Aircraft you're not going to get full fuel, full baggage and full seats - any more than two. This bird you can. I'm presuming the Useful Load is similar to the XCub, maybe 60 or so pounds less. Not bad.
I lust after this plane, and now I need to take a cold shower.
Now if they would sell it or under $300,000, they'd have a deal.

I believe the whole nose gear / tail gear issue came about due to how well each can do as back country aircraft. My understanding is the main gear position and the ability to absorb the loads of unimproved airports favored the tail wheel. The other issue is approach speeds, maneuverability, stopping and takeoff roll. If a nose wheel aircraft can meet all those criteria, then why not.

  • @Payne2view
    @Payne2view 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

As a non-pilot aviation enthusiast I see nothing wrong with the nose wheel.

Learned on a tail wheel in the 60's, flew C-130's for a career, still love tailwheels but can see the advantage of the tri gear...easier to teach family to fly, and much lighter on the insurance..love to see it with the tri bladed prop..I doubt there would be many places you could put a tail wheel that you could not put this aircraft...seems like a win win to me.

Hardcore Tailwheel pilot here - and while I would never own one I respect the company's choice to produce it. It's a savvy business decision that I hope works well for them. Sadly so many pilots have an irreversible FEAR of a tailwheel and will never fly one. Providing an option for those folks (or even for folks who just prefer nosedraggers) is a good thing from a business perspective. Increasing the pool of prospective buyers is never a bad move for any company. Good on 'ya CubCrafters!! Keep up the good work.

  • @speedygonzales9090

Actually, what I never liked about the Piper Cubs is precisely the tail wheel, I fear the tail spin after lending and also perhaps applying too much brakes on landing and end up flipping the plane over, well, with this "nose wheel" design both problems are solved of one shot. All I need now is win the lottery in order to buy one.😂👍

That mixture knob trick and a “you break it, you buy it” clause are a salesman’s best friend ... or so I’ve heard. OTOH, after overhearing someone ask who turned a nut loose in the cockpit, it must be reassuring to realize they are referring to the red knob that just fell off the mixture control.

This is a very interesting airplane. When I was flying my Piper Tri-Pacer back around 1970, we had the Piper Cub and the Piper Super Cub on the airfield with me. I did my early training in a tail dragger, the Fleet Canuck. I then moved to the Tri-Pacer. I like both the nose wheel and the tail wheel. The biggest problem I had with the tail wheel aircraft was being able to see where I was going. The Carbon Cub and the XCub have sure taken this style of airplane to a whole new level.

  • @PaulAnthonyDuttonUk

"I have never flown a carbon cub in general" - "I am not a tail wheel pilot" : CubCrafters has decided via the NX-Cub to take the mountain to Mohamed rather than wait for Mohamed to come and visit. In one fell swoop they have made everyone a cub pilot and such that the aircraft comes with a configurable landing option means that both pilot progression and resale market potential is kept high. Leasing companies will love this plane coz high residuals equals a lesser monthly payment.

Wow, a good upgrade. By moving the main landing gear backward, you'll get less weight on the structure. Using a heavier engine (which usually higher performance) might be necessary and the additional structure on the nose gear will move the CG forward to solve the problem caused by the main landing gear modification. Win-win solution.

Being a tailwheel pilot, with 400+ hrs, and less than 8 hrs nose wheel time... I would pick a tailwheel over the nose wheel. I can see benefits to this nose wheel cub but also see some potential downsides. I know that the “nose cub” has faa legal prop clearance, but it’s not enough for a lot of places I take the pacer to. Sometimes I feel like the 18”s of clearance I have is not enough... lol which is why I’m upgrading from 26” tires to 31’s, I can’t imagine taking the nose wheel with the minimum 7” clearance (nose wheel) not the 9” clearance (tailwheel) distances as being near enough to operate in the back country in Alaska.
I think there is a solution to that for the “nose cub”, switching to a shorter 3 blade prop could increase those distances but then there’s the small wheel issue.
Still, with what I perceive as potential issues, I see value in this new design...
