  • BMW N62 B36 tapping noise that is followed by a rough 2 second shake on cold start ups (the lower the temperature, the worse the noise). This only happens for 30 seconds when starting the car. There is no piston slap. only fault codes are for additive fuel mixture control limit reached (mixture too lean) 272C and differential pressure sensor plausibility. After the shake occurs as shown in the video and the lifter like noise disappears, the car runs very smooth and fine with no issues.
when the oil was drained in January 2022, there were no metal flakes or bad dirt within the oil or filter. There more than 3/4 of 5w-30 engine oil in the engine and it is not burning any oil. this issue has been happening for the past 2 years and happened out of the blue. Since the issue has occurred, the car has been driven for 10,000 KM and had the oil changed twice.
if anyone has encountered this issue on the BMW N62 engine, please let me know.

The issue has been isolated to the valvetronic on Bank 2 (the bank with the problem). When the N62 has a cold start, the valvetronic enters a transitional period as confirmed by a BMW service bulletin where a similar issue was known to be prevalent on N62 engines produced from 2004 - 2005 (735,745 and etc). The action to be made according to the bulletin is to replace both eccentric shafts, all intermediate levers and then reset all adaptations and etc. In this case I disconnected the eccentric shafr sensor and ran the car with no noise or rough shake which happens when the throttle variates from valvetronic during the cold start if i am correct. Even though it was disconnected, the car ran fine until after 5 minutes where it entered limp mode at high speed and RPM due to the valvetronic being disconnected. When I do the valve stem seals, I will be changing the valvetronic assembly on the affected bank with a good second hand one from another engine.
Now this issue has been happening since 2021 and the engine has covered more than 30,000KM since then and still runs the same despite this I will now fix it with other issues that have developed within the car at once.

Just went through this thought I had a knock. I replaced sparks n coils. Did oil change but during oil change when I dropped the oil I left screw out and poured some heavy oil stabilizer and a quart of oil right through. So many dark deposits came out. Then I did a carbon clean because the pistons are slapping from build up. Have to put it into I take boot after the maf n spray. Sea foam or gdi cleaner. Clean your maf with maf cleaner. And get throttle body cleaner n clean the valve. Put it all back together.

Oh dear... so many things could be the culprit.
    But lets get on it:
-1st get a diagnostic tool. INPA or better yet ISTA
    - try to up the idle a bit and reach 1500 or 2000 and see if the ticking noise goes away or just gets faster. If it goes away you may be low on oil or the oil is just not getting properly pressure to reach all spots. 1st is easy, just top it up, 2nd could be a bit tricky (oil pump, wrong type of oil...) but no big deal as well.
    - oil again - have you the correct one? How old is it? Filter has been changed? Status okay? N62 is picky about its oil and many engines died just because their owners thought "they can take it a lil longer". Turns out they can't. Oil isn't expensive, just change it as the interval says :)
    - it seems like you get a misfire as well and the engine ECU tries to even it out right after that. IMO guessing by the 1sec delay you might get more then just one misfire at a time
    - the rattle MIGIHT be the chain as well and if so that is a whole different story of a "pinche cabron" problem :D
Try these tips one by one and see where it gets you. Remember - there are two kind of engine problems: one where the engine runs but not well and one where the engine does not run anymore :) you are still on the good side of things.

    • @frederiquekruger4818

I used ISTA and other diagnostic equipment and the only codes I get are the fuel mixture codes (bank 1 and 2) when the car is warmed up it runs smooth and idles perfectly and is very quiet. Better than my friend's 750i f01 believe it or not.
When the idle increases, the noise disappears. Again this only happens for 30 seconds (at most) during cold starts.
Even with a full oil level it still does this. I am thinking of flushing the engine and if that doesn't solve it, I'll remove the valve cover and clean the cylinder head from the top.
The effect to me doesn't seem like a misfire but is rather more an extremely aggressive shake for a brief 1-2 second/s. I say this because I have another 745i that was misfiring on most cylinders due to bad ignition coils and the effect is far more different.
      Edit:
I forgot to mention that I run 5W-30 Full synthetic engine oil. I do believe that it is an issue of sludge but I can not understand the 1-2 second shake which stops the tapping noise.

@@frederiquekruger4818 it is always a good thing to start with the easy stuff. Oil changes are one of them so sure go ahead and see what it does. If you have no memory on how far back the last change was then it is that much a good idea to do. Other ideas might be lifters or valve stem seals....or many other things :D It could also be just fuel related. Like a bad quality product. Mercedes has an option within diagnostics where you can shift the ignition point based on what country and fuel quality you have but I don't recall seeing this on any BMW SW ever. Anyways GL with your troubles

      @frederiquekruger4818  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

The sound goes away after 30 seconds on cold starts. It doesn't happen when the car is driven. I have concluded that there is an insufficient amount of oil reaching that cylinder head on cold starts. I have been driving the car now lately and it runs fine. The lifter noise happens on extremely cold conditions. I will be flushing the engine, putting 5w-30 full synthetic, liquimoly motor protect and other additives to see the result. If that doesn't stop the problem, I will remove the valve cover and inspect. If I find a problem with the lifters, I will recondition the cylinder heads as the valve stem seals are known to fail on these engines. My theory is that the previous owner did not change the oil on time so there may be some sludge in the oil channels hence restricting oil flow to the cylinder head on cold starts. I will provide an update. I will also inspect the upper chain tensioner and the VANOS if I get the valve cover off.

I'm still having the issue however the tapping noise doesn't happen often now since I am regularly driving the car. The rough shake happens after every cold star. I recommend you remove the valve cover/s and check the camshafts and eccentric shaft as well as remove the oil sprayer bars and clean them if you're having the tapping noise. Usually a bad eccentric shaft sensor will cause a check engine light and misfires.

Nope, still running to this day more than 15,000km and multiple oil changes later. I suspect it has something to do with the valvetronic or the vanos. Only way to be sure is to remove the valve cover but I don't have time and if I remove the valve covers, I will be changing the valve stem seals.
