I love simple designs. This is a good set up. I am using a Boondock mount for my Old Town 136 that I installed a 1-1/8" square tubing insert that holds an aluminum square tubing big enough to mount the trolling motor C clamps to. I am going to mount the battery box to the boondock square tube. With this set up I can transfer the trolling motor to my wife's Old Town 106 Sportsman. For that reason, I thank you. Aint retirement great? Fishing the Nature Coast of Florida to fill the days.
Thanks, very helpful..I have watersnakes and having a difficult time getting it satisfactorily mounted..I think you just solved the problem..do another video on operating it on the water. Jim
Thanks for watching, I’m glad you found it helpful. I have another video where I’m trying it out for the first time. I might do a more detailed version in the spring.
You will have to rig something like pvc pipe connected to both motors. So when you steer one the other moves in sync. Probably have to get a bigger battery. You might be on to something. It would probably turn tighter.
Well, my trolling motor only weighs 5 lbs. I do balance my gear by weight to even out my kayak. I keep my 5lb anchor on the opposite side of the trolling motor. Only issue with doing a side mount turning the kayak to the side the motor is mounted a wider turn. Thanks for watching.
@ I feel like I messed up with this Newport 55 thrust. Maybe it’ll be okay in the back. Going to take her out as soon as I get the steering done. I’m probably going to put the battery up front to help.
@JMMULLINS I went with the lightest trolling motor I could find. It only has 24 lb thrust but it actually weighs 4.5 lbs. weight distribution is important with a side mount. A sharp turn to the side it’s mounted on makes it tippy. I’ve never tipped mine and I made a couple of tight turns. I think you’ll get it, trial an error you’ll find what works for you.
Honestly I don’t remember. I put the PVC pipe into the rod holders and laid the 2x4 across them and marked the board a little longer than I thought I needed. Then when I mounted the motor to the 2x4 I cut off the excess leaving a few inches past the clamp mount on the motor. Thanks for watching.
My first time Kayaking and this Kayak held strong. th-cam.com/users/postUgkx4k5UrhC3v_Y4hIEaXLGvHcN5a5aBmZNB The water got pretty rough as a speed boat zipped by me, and the Kayak withstood it (I expected to be capsized). The Ores are very easy to put together, the pump worked beautifully. the seats are a bit hard to sit in after a while (I recommend sitting on the floor). after reading the reviews I was very scared it'd get a hole in it, the material is very strong and durable. The Air valve may need a small Phillips head screwdriver to adjust, other than that, it's well worth the money!(update)I've gone Kayaking in 3 Lakes and 2 rivers totaling about 40 miles. the kayak had two holes and they patched easily and no other problems can't wait for kayaking season this year!
Thanks for the video it's been very helpful, I'm sixteen stone and was concerned about balance of kayak trolling setup however after watching I will give it a go, so I thank you, what make is your battery if you don't mind. Frankie.
Great instructional video. BTW looks like you are enjoying retirement life as well. I've been retired since 2011, like you, enjoy fishing from kayak in both ocean and lake. Anyway, what was the length of the bolt you used to construct your motor mount? I'll be getting a Newport Vessel 36lb trolling motor. Thanks again for putting this on TH-cam.
Thanks for watching. I used 5 inch bolts. I only used the length because I used spacers between the pvc pipe and the board to make the board set level. Some kayaks there is no need for spacers, so shorter bolts will work.
It does great on the water. Better than I thought it would. I don’t run the trolling motor in the rivers around here. They are shallow and full of rocks. The paddles do best for rivers. Motor does great in ponds and lakes.
Yes, it’s actual rod holders I bought at Walmart 3 bucks apiece. I just drilled a hole through them and mounted with wood screws. If you’re talking about the pipe I used for bushings to level up the rod holders I’m not sure. I think 3/4” but they only need big enough to go over the wood screws. Btw the rod holders work great. Tip. Mount them close to the outside edge of your kayak it will make it easy to reach around and grab and replace while on the water. Thanks for watching.
@@HotLeadretired , yes, I was talking about the pipes that go in the rod holders on the kayak. I almost bought them things a few minutes ago but they don’t look like they’ll fit in the rod holders on my kayak. Thanks for responding😊
Oh, they are 1 inch pvc pipe. They fit a little lose. 1.25” fit to tightly. Later on I added rubber bands to the end of the pipe. I just wrapped a few (4-5 ) rubber bands around the end of the pipe that goes in the rod holder. It tightens them up and really works great. I improved upon my mods as the need arises.
Best I can remember 1 4ft 2x4 board. 6ft piece of 1 inch PVC pipe. 4 bolts 5/8 inch by 5 inch long. 5/8 washers and nuts. Two 5/8 plastic quick detach knobs from lowe’s. 1 can black spray paint. 2 eye hooks. I used over size nuts as spacers I already had. That’s about it.
I have the same exact kayak and used the water snake with the kayak mount and put it in the same place you did but I had problems it not turning good at all. How’s your working for you?
It doesn’t turn to the right as well as I like. After some practice it gets better. I added a diy rudder to the Watersnake it helps with the turning some. As guess I’ve gotten used to it now.
I added a plastic rudder to my Watersnake it works much better but still not prefect. I’m happy with it. I did a video on how I added a rudder to my motor.
@markwichmann7604 Glad to help. Thanks for watching. Yes, let me know how it turns out. I’m still using mine. This will be the 3 rd summer. It’s still working out great. Good luck.
I just bought a 4 foot long 2x4. I installed the 2x4 to the PVC pipe and attached my motor and made a line about 2 inches longer. I also marked where to cut my PVC pipe even with the edge of the 2x4. So, I didn’t even measure anything.
I groom DOGS! Let em bark all day long! now hopefully you might be willing to give a lil advice. I want to do a holeless mount like yours. I got a 12' Sundolpin Journey. what size trolling motor would you suggest? ty next time dem dogs need to be in the movie
My 24 lb thrust does fine. Weight was my deciding factor. With me and all my gear. I think 30 lb thrust would be plenty. Plus you battery size. The more thrust the more amps the motor will burn. Which means less run time or a bigger battery. I think a happy medium would be 30 lbs of thrust or less. Good luck and thanks for watching.
It was the best setup I’d found, period! I knew that I had most everything I needed to construct it in my garage. I was about to cut the video short and head out there when I heard you mention that you had to register your kayak in your state. I live in Illinois where everything short of driftwood has to be registered so I went online and checked. No surprise here, yes, if I installed a trolling motor I would have to register my kayak, number it and pay yearly fees. CRAP! I may need to think this over a little while. lol Thanks again and I repeat, you found an excellent solution to the mounting bracket problem. Thank you, Wes
Because on the Teton 116 kayak the rod holders are angled. In order to make the 2x4 set at 90 degrees you have to use spacers. If you don’t the motor will be on a crazy angle.
Anybody really wanting the easiest trolling motor mount ..just clamp it to the side behind the seat and go. Works on 90% of all kayaks. Won't Crack it , won't hurt it , takes 5 seconds to do and have been doing so for years .try it before you build something.
th-cam.com/video/ROR_eTuQO9I/w-d-xo.html. The biggest problem mounting it with the optional kayak mount is the motor rotation when you turn it on. The one point of contact is not strong enough with the plastic brackets in my opinion. Watch this video. This was the reason I made my own, it’s much sturdier.
This is awesome! I have the same kayak & have been wanting to do this. So much more water to cover. Is there a way to purchase this setup without the trolling motor of course? Venmo? CashApp?
Well, after you get used to it, it isn’t that hard. If you mean going in circles while drifting just lift the motor out of the water. Adding a rudder help me out a lot. It just took me some time to get used to turning it. After that it runs great.
Is yours mounted at the center of your kayak? If it is it needs to be more toward the rear, sitting behind you. If it’s mounted behind you just make small steering adjustments on low speed. It will go straight you just have to make little adjustments until you find the spot it goes straight.
I don’t really know what to tell you. Mine has never gone in circles. If I turn too sharply it gets a little tipping. So I don’t make sharp turns anymore. I say just practice with it on making slow wide turns.
Nice work. I have two questions. How's retirement treating you? And, still able to use obamacare? I'm approaching retirement and will probably have to take the same route you did.
Retirement is great. I love it. I still have Obamacare, since 2014, and it has actually dropped in price. $105.00 a month. Mainly because my son dropped off because of his age and he has employer insurance. So it’s just me now. So, I’m 58 years old now. I’ve been retired 8 years as of March 1, 2022. I have 7 years till I can get social security and Medicare. I think Obamacare will still be around.
The motor comes with a standard mount. That’s what I bought. Or you could get the kayak mount for a little more money. I watch the reviews of the kayak mount it wasn’t what I needed for my set up.
