  • After the loco got attached to the rake of the Bombay-Kanyakumari Exp., I jumped into the cab. The driver patiently explained the various controls. A memorable journey was about to begin...

    I'm 66 years old now and recollect this loco WCM2 20181 when it was brand new black in colour with a red stripe running along the side on Eastern Railway and operated between Howrah and Burdwan DC traction. My Father then an '' A ' grade Mail driver was the first to drive this loco when it was imported to India and was inaugurated by our then honourable Prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru , the year was 1957.

    • @ManiVijay

      Fascinating! What an honor to be the son of someone who drove this loco for the first time. I would love to hear more about your father's experiences, and yours as well :-) So, was this loco converted to run on 1500v DC for the routes in and around Bombay?

    • @georgejoseph7263
      @georgejoseph7263 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      As far as I remember this loco was running on 1500 volts DC.

    • @georgejoseph7263
      @georgejoseph7263 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      That was between Howrah and Burdwan.

    • @ManiVijay
      @ManiVijay  6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Howrah to Burdwan used to be 3000v DC before being converted to 15kv AC. So, the loco must have run on 3000v DC in the beginning.

      Mani Vijay I was too young a kid to know the difference in voltages, I was probably too excited to see my hero of a Dad at the helm of driving a beautiful loco with so many passengers in his responsible hands.

    I remember those days in 90s when I used to visit my relatives in Kurla and we used to stay nearby the railway line. In the evenings we used to go sit beside the tracks to watch all the evening trains and fast locals. At that time there were only wcm locos. And since Electric locos were only in Mumbai region, i used to cherish it. Loved these locos a lot and when wcam3 came as replacement it was a disappointment..

    I guess in late 90s the tamilnadu express was running with this engine . I still remember in the Chennai Central when I looked up to this engine.. it was so monstrous in appearance with a " Don't come Near me" kind of look 🤣🤣🤣. As a kid i was much scared to even see it closer ...my dad once said that it looks like an alligator with monstrous power that runs to Delhi much much much faster than anyother. I guess it almost matched the speed of rajadhani and top speed of 110-120kmph in that period is definitely not a joke, gentlemen 🙏🏽 🇮🇳

    I personally called it as Mumbai Bullet train engine.

    Interesting two-tone horn, reminiscent of the UK electrics (all UK locos to be exact).

I know my first wish cant be fufilled but I hope someone can fufill my 2nd wish by issuing a postage stamp on this locomotive.. it is my fav loco & only WCG-2, gets remotely close in comparison.. As far as I can recollect before these locos came to Eastern Railway. My father and a team of his colleagues were on deputation to Central Railway for some sort of orientation or training the year was 1956 and we as a family were put up with a railway family Garrett if I'm not mistaken, who was also a Central Railway driver at the Kalyan railway quarters from where we would wave out to Dad with his train hauled by the type of DC loco now seen at the NRM Delhi.( I might have to check out the type and confirm ) we also attended school during our stay and returned a year later to our railway quarters at Howrah. The Statesman newspaper Calcutta edition, I recall had published headlines with sprawling photographs of our honourable Prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru at Howrah station dedicating the first batch of WCM locos to our nation. Happy New Year...I don't know if I ever commented on this video....in 1998,I had the good fortune of checking out a WCM 2 electric at V.T.(CSTM )....it arrived with Bombay Mail....I found that for a DC locomotive it had certain advanced features like battery back up,push button pantograph operation and more...twelve of these engines arrived from English Electric, c.1958-61 as EM2 Class engines to work initially on Eastern Railway's Howrah-Burdwan route,electrified that time to 3000 Volts DC,but by 1967, this system was substituted with 25 kV AC 50 Hz and that remains till date...under supervision from RDSO the 12 EM2s were re-wired for CR's 1500 Volts DC supply and sent over to Bombay Region as WCM 2 Class.

      It is truly great to hear from you, Viraf. Remember me, I am Vijay Balasubramanian - we had met during the annual MRSP meeting in 1995 and you sent me cut-outs as well. How are you doing? Are you on Facebook? I am in touch with ISA on Facebook.

      This footplate happened because of ISA only. He knew the LP, so I was able to get a memorable ride :-)

    Hi Mani, how did you manage to get inside the locos so easily and have the Loco-pilots agree to talk to you. I am 36 now but have always been a childish railway fanatic! When I was 35 I stood near an engine at Chennai egmore asking few questions about the engine. I was shooed away disrespectfully and told it was none of my business 😂😞. I was and am still and will always remain curious about all things with Indian railways! Wish I get an opportunity to see the inside of a loco in motion or even at rest.

      At that time, a good railfan friend of mine used to personally know many of the LPs in Bombay division. What's happening nowadays is many of the immature railfans are pestering the LPs no end with posting too much stuff on social media and revealing too much (from what I have heard). This is making life tough for others who want to establish good relations with the LP and staff.

    I used to see this loco quite often during my school days, traveling from Nasik. I still recall seeing the name plate.. English Electric 1956, Vulcan foundries ..

    Rahul. unfortunate to inform that the WCM2 has been moved out from KYN. :( just 1 WCG2 and WCG1 are kept there (Cant even say that they are preserved) i got a chance to peep into KYN electric shed few days back. have uploaded the pics on flikr. u can have a glimpse of it. i even doubt that they might even scrap the last WCG2 left there.
