When the beat box drops out, Laynes voice comes to the front. Love hearing Layne singing. You’re able to get your geek on too, which is great.
My favorite part of this song is when they drop all the extras and are all singing the same words together. Layne's voice cuts thru and he has such a sweet voice but we don't get to hear as much because he is bringing the beat and all his other vocal percussion goodness. Many of my favorite VoicePlay songs are ones where Lanye has a shining moment of either singing, rapping or playing an instrument.
The whole group is so freaking amazing and versatile.

A good habit is to always watch all Voiceplay/Geoff Castellucci videos until the patron roll to not miss anything. Also they sometimes put humor in their subtitles.

Absolutely wonderful reaction, Jenn, I love watching you! I never heard the song before, never watch the program, so obviously, no clue going in. Didn't matter because it's Voiceplay! They are always wonderful, vocally, technically, visually. It doesn't matter that they don't have a fifth permanent member. They choose their collaborators carefully and are able to work with them as though they had been singing together since 1997.

I’m disappointed you didn’t comment on Layne’s singing (right before Ashley’s “flight”). He sings so infrequently and has such a unique quality to his voice, I was really looking forward to you analysis.

I really like how Layne arranged this. That simulated funky synth. This is a really fun video both for the ears and the eyes. Unlike many other people I never was much of a fan of Kate Bush's original. Nevertheless, she's still a very talented artist. I did like her songs Babooshka and Hounds of Love, among others. Voiceplay's take on "Running up that hill", though, is fantastic! As is your breakdown of how it was sung. Keep 'em coming Jen!

Voiceplay really delivers! Their vocals of course are great but its their theatrics that always pushes their performances to great heights! I don't know if they've covered any other Kate Bush songs but they should. I really love the breaks they added to this song. Your humor and analysis of this great cover made my day! Thanks Jen! 😄

At the beginning and end Geoff is doing some throat-singing, that's that odd sound. i thought their eyes were rolling 'cos their bodies had been frozen but something weird is happening to Ms Diane and they want to see. i love that you understand this this is beautiful from Kate Bush and that there's an original marvellousness to it that predates any current use.
Geoff actually said it’s Subharmonic Overtones!
He’s singing a sub whilst doing overtones simultaneously.
Geoff does not do throat singing because it's too painful.

Geoff almost gets a sort of overtone going with that drone note, or am I hear affect? Love Ashley Diane every time she does anything. They get the best people to work with, don't they?
After watching the end a couple more times, I wonder if Cesar is doubling Geoff on the drone note, because his lips aren't moving when Ashley's being doubled (and thus Eli is the low doubling on Ashley's lines). I know the visuals don't always match the vocals 100%, but VoicePlay's usually good about picking which takes to use so that they do match.
@@stephenkissinger4434 It's easy enough to get that light overtone. Looking at the shape of his mouth, he's pushing it just slightly raising the back of his tounge to get a sort of nasal ring going. Keeping it light, I don't know if it qualifies as an overtone though. Give it a try!
Could also be Geoff throat singing there.
I think it’s a high sub by Geoff. He does it in “Kidnap the Sandy Claws” too, and talks about it in one of his tutorials on his channel.

Ashley Diane also joined Voiceplay for "If I Were a Rich Man/Girl" - one of their best and one I would highly recommend for your "Week of Voiceplay".
FWIW, in the original version, those "do, do do"s were samples of Kate played back on a Moog with a very breathy tone. So it's wholly appropriate that the singers here went for a deliberately breathy tone quality in those sections.
BTW, I've never seen Stranger Things, but am a lifelong Kate Bush fan.
I haven't seen one second of Stranger Things and don't plan to but I'm glad they brought Kate Bush back. I had her album in my teens in the 90's.

I'm seeing a lot of these comments, but you've really got to check out If I Were A Rich Man/Girl. It's one of the best VoicePlay performances by far, and one of the most creative and driving a capella arrangements I've ever heard!
I am definitely a Stranger Things fan, pretty much from the beginning. At a friend's house, we both got hooked and have been ever since. I saw this within an hour or so of VoicePlay releasing it. Since then I've been looking for my reactors so I can have as much fun watching you all react as I did.
Great reaction as usual Jennifer. I'm not that familiar with Voiceplay but that was fun. And we might have a Voiceplay week down the road! I guess I will get more familiar with them. 😁

I love that the guys are not just continuing to sing, regardless of the levitation, they are frozen in place, save for their singing. Look at how much they were bopping along before, then they are all still while she levitates. The terrified faces make more sense too. (I have never watched Stranger Things, so maybe there's a reason, I don't know.)
Addition: the guys checking on her after was likely both for the shot and real, to make sure she did not land wrong or anything.
Love the song and the video, even though I have not seen any of Strange Things, you would think being retired and have all the time to do so I would watch it. As, always you did a great job, and you happen to be wearing my favorite color. Keep on working on those low notes.

Heh. I'm glad I watched all the way to the end of your reaction because I was getting ready to chide you on pausing before the Patreon credits. As you can see, once in a while VoicePlay tacks on a little "extra" bit after the presumed end of the video. And, as someone else remarked, it's not a bad idea to have the subtitles on, as they are NOT computer generated - someone codes them manually and from time to time they can be really funny. Especially if Geoff has just done something inhuman.
I just spent the better part of the day listening to various reactors on this song, though I'd never heard the original and don't watch TV so don't know the show. Nigel Battle dropped a major spoiler and actually played the clip from the show that this is from, so at least there's that. But you're the second reactor to hint at "disjointed" and that wasn't part of the clip he showed, so I'm still wondering.
I enjoy watching your reactions because of the technical information you give out, along with your quite fun and honest enjoyment of what you're watching/hearing. And yes, I'm subscribed! (long since :D )
I cheated and went to Netflix and quickly read the text of what’s in each episode but I knew it was the end of season four. Too creepy for me so I just sampled that very long episode. I finally did get to the end so I could try figure out why the heck she was levitating and the significance of the song and headphones. A lot of other reactors comments have helped quite a bit. Did you notice that on the Walkman the label for the cassettes said VoicePlay?

I love seeing people who actually care about Layne, sometimes (almost everytime) i feel like people don't "see" him as much as like... Geoff... It looks like they forget that Layne is here because he's "only doing the beatbox", and maybe they forget that is an acapella song and this drums aren't from an instrument... And yet his voice is so sweet... Well, as always, loving your reactions, they're fun and supper informative.

My whole family is Stranger Things fans. My kids grew up in the '80s. My son and his friends were all into playing D&D. So he could relate to the nerds in the show. Yes, they had WALKMANS. Parents could go broke trying to keep their kids in batteries in those days.

I've seen season 1 and intend to see more (the rest) some time. But "disjointed" wouldn't have been a spoiler if you hadn't mentioned it. Luckily I've no idea what you spoiled so I guess it doesn't matter - people frequently get disjointed or worse on "TV". By he way, have you reacted to Home Free: Adam Rupp Drum Solo [SPM ST15] (th-cam.com/video/EanKWLUaDpg/w-d-xo.html). Saw a drummer's reaction and he said it really deserved a vocal coach's reaction because there weren't any drums.
