It’s a neck and neck for my Ashley favorite with “We Don’t Talk About Bruno...” Too close to call, really. And I love Layne’s voice! It is a super sweet, pure voice, yet distinctive.
This was the perfect modern cover for this song. The plain white background took immediately took the song out of the movie/play so we can focus only on the music. They infused the music with the sheer joyfulness of the song. The individual parts were all phenomenal. But the sum of all of those pieces is several magnitudes greater. Pure joy.
If you take a close look, you'll see Layne smirking in the back when Geoff does his ending. Not all... but most... of those crazy high/lows from Geoff are in arrangements by Layne. Especially in the older performances. A little bit of back and forth play between them going on...
hehehehehe, saw the length of the video and couldn't help but giggle. I'm not complaining, by any stretch of the imagination. It was just funny, considering your comment in the first video, yesterday, "it's going to be a long week." And that's because you're right, Voice Play always has so much going on in their songs. Both on the arrangement front and the visuals. The level of talent they get to colab with, too, helps that along. Something I've noticed that is, I believe, unique to Voice Play is that whomever they're colabing with becomes part of the group as a whole. They're not there just to be featured, they're not there just to sing the "song". Whomever it is becomes bv, instrumentation, effects...whatever is needed, as well as singing their part. PTX, for as much as I love them, doesn't do things that way, certainly, and neither does Home Free, for the most part. Not from top to bottom like Voice Play does, at least. It's one of the reasons, I think, Voice Play has no trouble finding folks who want to be involved in their projects.
LOVED the "What?" reaction!! I had a similar face when I heard that the first (and second, and 20th time). Classic!! Love this arrangement!! Great reaction!!
What? Love seeing peoples reactions to that part! This is one of my faves by VP Geoff & Ashley are amazing so is everyone else and it’s just such a fun arrangement so much to listen to.
VP doesn't believe in repeating themselves inside an arrangement, as you've discovered, so there are always surprises to delight us and keep us interested. Great reaction, Jen!
Wonderful reaction, Jen!! One of my favorite moments was Ashley's run, obviously, and her What? but that What? was in response to the look of astonishment each of the guys was giving her. I also loved the Eastern Wall sound. I know there's a name for it but can't remember. And hearing Geoff go up when you know he's supposed to go down..... priceless! Can't wait for tomorrow!
I love Ashley's voice. That run she did is insane. I bet she could sing The Diva Song from The Fifth Element at full speed without missing any notes on the run that the original singer couldn't do.
They so masterfully use text painting in this arrangement, the descending rounds when singing down and below and the frigean (sp) harmonies most common in near eastern/middle-eastern music. All that with the Low-fi switch-up and the way they optimized Ashley's jazz vocal agility. It is JUST STUNNING. Probably my favorite of their arrangements.
Such a good analysis. VP makes doing a good analysis so difficult because they have so much going on throughout with musical layering, stacked chords. You may have four different things happening at once. It’s almost like analyzing a symphony orchestra with the amount of “stuff” they pack into one piece.
Wow... simply blown away. I worked as part of the stage crew on a production of "Fiddler on the Roof" back in high school. I still remember most of the lyrics to this song as well as meany of the others from the show. This arrangement and the group singing it changed the feel a bit but for the better. Voiceplay truly are the "Theater Kids" of the A Capella groups. They really can put on a show. Ashley brings in a nice counter to the deep rich tones of Geoff. Speaking of Geoff. Here he is again showing off his incredible vocal range. As well as showing how easy it is for him to jump around in that range. Loved the reaction. Good choice. Your analysis of it was so fun. Having a bit of background in music myself I enjoy watching teachers/coaches react/analyze performances. I might not understand all of it but I will at lest learn more about music this way.
Please, never apologize for pausing and backing up to analyze (and enjoy) the various points of the vocals. That's why you're here and that's why we're here listening to your expertise and your delight with each nuance you examine. You go, you!
Fun song and fun reaction! You made me laugh out loud several times. You mentioned something about a "cry" in someone's voice. I too hear a cry in a voice when I sing. Not a cry in my voice but cries in the voices of those who hear me, ie: " Stop! Please stop!" You reall are improving on those low notes!!! When I think back to when I first subscribed to your channel, you are now hitting some of these liw notes cleaner and without as much effort. Is Geoff in danger of losing his job?
Hahah thank you!! Oh noooo, keep singing 😁 haha, thanks, I am in no way trying to steal anyone’s job… but am I working towards being a Geoff impersonator, who knows?😂
The first time I heard this I froze and eyes opened wide, I hit pause and prepared myself. The thought of an updated version made my eye twitch. I've loved this song since childhood, but just a few seconds into the cover I loved it. By the end I was jumping up and down with excitement. Great reaction, thank you so much!
No need to apologize for missing things--you can listen to Voiceplay's stuff 20 times and still hear new things. It's amazing the amount of work and artistry they put into their arrangements. That being said, It's so much fun watching your reactions (you're by far my favorite). I've been watching you for a while, and am particularly impressed by your mastery of the incredibly low notes. (I get such a kick out of watching you try them) Thanks, Jen!!!
The face you made when Layne started singing is the same face I make every time we hear Layne sing. He has such a soft, sweet voice. Which is ironic given he’s the percussionist. But his singing voice feels like a warm hug after a long day.
Every now and then I come back to watch this for your wonderful disbelieving reactions to Ashley's ridiculous riff and Geoff's equally ridiculous high-to-low response...and then stick around for the fantastic breakdown of what's going on all through the song. Such fun and helpful reactions and explanations every single video - thank you!
If I remember correctly, Layne was the baritone of the group when Scott Porter was the beatboxer. So of course he's just as great at singing as the others! =D
Jen, Even if you don't have time during Voiceplay week to go over all their recent repertoire could you review their cover of the Kansas' song "Carry On My Wayward Son"? This song was special in rock/pop history & they also used a guest singer in that arrangement, Omar Cardona.
I was in a high school production of this show, in the chorus. The music is great and this arrangement is fire. Some great moments from everyone, including some singing by Lane! I always love your insights, Jen. It was also fun to watch your obvious enjoyment. :)
That part where Geoff goes to the C, and then there's a shit... it almost sounds like he might go subharmonic, but same note... plus the vowel change. So good Jen! Excited to binge the rest of Voice Play Week!
You are fangirling over my favorite group *and* offering technical analysis so I can appreciate their talent even more, and I am here for it. They had planned to do a different song but someone else did it and got blasted for the singers not matching up with the ethnicity of the song, so VP pivoted. Half the guys in VP are Jewish and one is "honorary" after all this time together so they decided to go with their strength, so to speak. It is lovely to hear Layne sing. A lot of people forget (or don't know) that Layne was their baritone until beatboxer Scott Porter left to pursue acting. Layne took over the vocal percussion and Tony Wakim came in as baritone. When he wanted to stop touring and form Pattycake with Layne, they got J. None, and now Cesar. This rendition was way better than my high school production of Fiddler On the Roof.
Really enjoyed your reaction 😄 This is such a fun and technically complex (like most of their songs) a bunch of “moving pieces” all the time. VP does this so well.
This is by far my all-time favourite VoicePlay song. From the playful and fun arrangement, to the attitudes, to the runs and literally everything else. I'm not surprised your reaction to it matched it all, this is a song that fits your personality, at least the on-screen personality. Good stuff! :D
This is one my favorite upbeat, happy Voiceplay songs. So glad you reacted to this. I love how much you notice what Layne is doing. He's my favorite and a lot of reactors don't talk about him much.
You had a lot of fun with this one. You’re so much fun to watch and listen to!! That was a lot of words to sing that fast, but it was an interesting take on this beautiful song.
It’s hard to pick favorites with these guys but this has got to be wayyyyy up towards the top. SO much going on-genius to put this song to the hip-hop ish rhythm. And if you didn’t already know Ashley is a beast, you do now-that was one heck of a flex. Also this is where I realized that arrangements are one of Layne’s many superpowers (same w. Geoff). And I LOVELOVELOVE hearing him sing!!! And yeah, what an intro for Cesar as the new member. And Eli-everybody got their moment to shine here. Great insights, as always. Loved this reaction. Would you please pretty pretty please do Peter Barber’s It Won’t Be Me? It’s SOOO good. Also, his solo from Susannah is pretty amazing (I knew he could act, but wow does he bring across the characters’s inner struggle).
Love it! As always, your reaction to VoicePlay brings me so much joy! I had hoped I could make the premiere but didn't. I'm so tired now, it's late here, but I couldn't help watching anyway. Will watch again when I'm more alert. This is one of my favourites. I love it so much but it doesn't get all that much recognition. I'm so happy you reacted to it! Now you've seen all the full lengths featuring Ashley (she's been in some of their shorts/minis as well). And this one was the first one with Cesar as official member! I miss J None a lot, but am so happy that Cesar joined! I wish that they both could be part of the group! Can't wait to see what reaction/analysis tomorrow brings from you!
Not heard this before, they made a cracking job of it! So much better than the original song, made it fun instead of depressing! Great reaction, it gets more predictable how long you will spend on the tune especially VP 🙂 💖💕💖
Wonderful! Jennifer I was unable to join in time for the start! By the time I joined you were already well into the song so I jumped back out resigned to watch it later. Sorry! Anyway, you missed one little tidbit ... at 11:59 when the lyrics are "eastern wall" Ashley and Cesar? throw in a little middle eastern riff there. I think you were distracted by the drum thing. Just so detail oriented! Loved the nose scratch moment Ashley gave you. 😁 Awesome reaction and analysis as always Jennifer. 😊
It has been a while since I watched this one. I had not caught Cesar’s little bit of sass at the end and it is so typical of him. To really see full out Cesar sass watched their mini of the tiki room. I have never seen anyone flirt with the camera as well as he does. Sometimes I just go back and watch it over and over again just to cheer me up.
Hiya Jen! I love seeing someone appreciate Layne - I think he gets overlooked far too often. I didn’t see that you’ve ever reacted to an older track of theirs - True Colors. Check it out. Layne does a *lot* of singing in that one and his voice is so perfectly suited to the song. Also: Hoist the Colors had one impressively soaring slide from Geoff. He ends up crowding Eli’s turf. The camera isn’t on him, so I think a lot of people miss it.
Love your Voiceplay reactions. Ohhh... Please check out. The Phantom of the Opera...everyone is so amazing. Love Rachel Potter so much! Layne's beatboxing is soooo crazy.. It is an older one but it is so freaking good!
You must be having fun this week because you were being more funny and quirky than normal. Which is saying a lot. I think that is why most people like you so much, you are yourself. We don't see you pretending. Keep it up.
Day 47 of "I have just discovered Geoff Castelluci and Voiceplay and I'm going to dive down the rabbit hole of their reaction and analysis videos and see how many of Geoff's notes I can hit to teach myself how to sing". So far, I'm able to hit close to all of them on this song 😄
I believe Geoff's "Please." was after a low run that sounds impressive but is relatively easy for him (and kinda buried behind the other voices), then Ashley's "What?" was her response basically saying she can do it too, with him having another run at the end but not masked with the other voices. Layne really wanted to show off the extremes I think!
I absolutely adore you and your reactions to Voice Play. Thank you so much. Voice Play just put out a new so, I Can't Make You Love Me. Please do a reaction to it.
I love your video so cool I love it 😍 this song is my favorite this song is fiddler on the roof my favorite movie musical. now my favorite movie is Carrie, and rose red’ as well as Stephen king it it from 2017 but I love your video so much so cool ! 😎
Layne was originally VoicePlays's baritone (back when they were 4:2Five)...he's also the only original member of the band that has been there since 1997.
Quite cool, but this girl is fantastic, 伊卉儿Katty . She has the voice of an Angel. I just made a TH-cam channel with her music and will keep adding great videos. Why not give her a reaction? /Olaf.
Great reaction, would love to see you do a Kate Bush feature week, you could have songs like Moments of Pleasure, This Woman’s Work, Babooshka, Running up that hill, Wuthering Heights, The Sensual World, The Song of Solomon, Cloudbusting, Suspended in Gaffa, I could go on, she has an amazing library of songs to choose from keep up the good work 👍👍👍
This was Ashley's first colab with Voiceplay and still my favorite. Another great reaction.
Oh wow! So great 😁
It’s a neck and neck for my Ashley favorite with “We Don’t Talk About Bruno...” Too close to call, really. And I love Layne’s voice! It is a super sweet, pure voice, yet distinctive.
I've been trying to find more of Ashley, but can only find the colabs with Voiceplay. Has she done anything else?
@@FireheartKR she posts a lot of clips on her ig
She sings with Voices of Liberty at EPCOT !
This was the perfect modern cover for this song. The plain white background took immediately took the song out of the movie/play so we can focus only on the music. ashley: What?
Jennifer: WHOT? WHAT DO YOU MEAN WHAT
If you take a close look, you'll see Layne smirking in the back when Geoff does his ending. Not all... but most... of those crazy high/lows from Geoff are in arrangements by Layne. Especially in the older performances. A little bit of back and forth play between them going on...
It's payback for all the times Geoff bites Layne's carrots. Lol! They've been friends since adolescence and it shows.
That and Cesar's face when Ashley does her big riff/what.
You talking so much, you are actually boring.
@@janhurter5214 Your boredom is easily cured. Don't read it. You have the control, so if you keep reading, you must like being bored.

So much fun!
I met Ashley Diane in Disneyworld on spring break!! she’s literally the nicest and super sweet! I got a picture and autograph😍
The point about training all the parts of your voice (essentially your whole voice) is instructive to me and every singer.
This was the video that made me fall in love with Ashley, where I had been resolutely devoted to Rachel before. Great analysis of her, Jen!
VP doesn't believe in repeating themselves inside an arrangement, as you've discovered, so there are always surprises to delight us and keep us interested. Great reaction, Jen!

@ Ilona I think you mean klezmer music.
That can be fun music to listen to sometimes, typically with clarinets.
did you see Layne's smirk as he goes up?

I love Ashley's voice. That run she did is insane. I bet she could sing The Diva Song from The Fifth Element at full speed without missing any notes on the run that the original singer couldn't do.

Layne was originally VoicePlays's baritone (back when they were 4:2Five)...he's also the only original member of the band that has been there since 1997.
Um, Geoff?
Geoff and Earl as well.
How have you NOT done Voiceplay's The Grinch!?!?!?!?!?!?
Really really cool 😎
Quite cool, but this girl is fantastic, 伊卉儿Katty . She has the voice of an Angel. I just made a TH-cam channel with her music and will keep adding great videos. Why not give her a reaction? /Olaf.
Commemting for that algorithm.
Great reaction, would love to see you do a Kate Bush feature week, you could have songs like Moments of Pleasure, This Woman’s Work, Babooshka, Running up that hill, Wuthering Heights, The Sensual World, The Song of Solomon, Cloudbusting, Suspended in Gaffa, I could go on, she has an amazing library of songs to choose from keep up the good work 👍👍👍
You should definitely check out voice plays Twenty One Pilots mashup🔥🔥🔥😎😎😎jeff and Eli rap in it!
At around 8:30 you are talking about his C that Jeff is hitting, but doesn't he go lower just after? I think its an F?
love your accent
16:45 WHAT!
I still feel Geoff has to mess with her in each video as a tradition after this one.
There's a child being born in this world who can rival dimash but almost not yet.
Any comment as to why the bass is this group scoops into almost everything? It’s all I can focus on every time I hear them.
