...the pen pieces, he got that from when Chilton went to see Lector and gloat about the senator never hearing about the "deal" Starling talked about, the deal where he'd get to walk on a beach under Swat supervision once a week. Chilton was so gleeful saying Starling had played Lector, but Chilton had himself contacted the senator about making a deal with Lector; partway through his self congragulatios Chilton absently discarded his pen, and Lector's attention was riveted, knowing Chilton was too focused on himself - Chilton - to remember yet another pen he'd put down somewhere.
...like you didn't notice it yourself. I'm glad you liked it.
    It was chilling in theaters.

You see Tynia, what makes Hannibal so intriguing and more deadly than just a gorefest is that he is absolutely calculated and methodical in his approach to tearing someone apart physically and psychologically. --- You must watch the Hannibal TV series. ---- It's absolutely amazing starring Mads Mikkelsen ( one of my favorite actors).

Hey Tynia, Anthony Hopkins was asked by the director why he chose to be standing in the center of his cell. ---- For the scene of him meeting Clarice. When the director asked him why he was doing that, Hopkins said “I’m waiting to greet her.” ---- How do you know she’s coming, Hopkins said “I can smell her.” -------- Now that is next level messing with your mind. DAmn. ---- What a master in studying personalities. Even corrupted on a pysiological level.

Hey Tee, Martha Stewart was dating Sir Anthony Hopkins at the time the movie came out. ---- His performance was so chilling, that Martha left him soon after seeing the movie. ---- She thought if he had that in him as an actor that must be buried somewhere in him as a person. ---- She couldn't see him as anything other than Hannibal. And expected him to eat her liver at any time going forward.

Read a fun fact that they most people know the movie by "Hello Clarice", but he actuality say "Good evening Clarice". Also that Sir Anthony Hopkins was only on screen for less than 17 mins, but won and Oscar.
The movie won like 5 Oscars.

    • @d.-_-.b
      @d.-_-.b ปีที่แล้ว +3

The exact wording is "appearing on screen for little more than 16 minutes" which reasonable people take as how long he's in the movie for, and by my DVD copy that translates to 34 minutes 54 seconds including voice time as he enters then exits each of the ten scenes he is in.
What makes the figure believable to be fair, other than how unfair it is to Hopkins by having reputable sites blindly repeat it without checking, is that Hannibal is completely absent for extended periods of the movie twice, once for almost 20 minutes and another for over 25 minutes. Also his first appearance isn't until almost 12 minutes in.
Here's the breakdown from my DVD giving start - end timestamps = duration (running total):
      11:55 - 18:38 = 6:43 (6:43) "May I see your credentials?"
      26:54 - 30:20 = 3:26 (10:09) "Your bleeding has stopped."
      50:03 - 55:20 = 5:17 (15:26) "Quid pro quo"
      57:17 - 58:20 = 1:03 (16:29) "His first name is Louis"
      58:49 - 1:02:10 = 3:21 (19:50) "Where will it tickle you?"
      1:04:03 - 1:10:45 = 6:42 (26:32) "Good evening, Clarice."
      1:11:23 - 1:15:10 = 3:47 (30:19) "Mind the drawings please."
      1:16:52 - 1:19:31 = 2:39 (32:58) "Talk to him!"
      1:21:13 - 1:21:33 = 0:20 (33:18) "Pulse 84."
      1:47:26 - 1:49:02 = 1:36 (34:54) "I'm having an old friend for dinner."

Clarice is a titan of a badass character. A few times during the movie. For example , Clarice is surrounded by much bigger men In the elevator at the start in Quantico. ---- At the postmortem exam in the small town funeral parlor. It is meant to show how she is a female in a male-dominated world of law enforcement. --- Especially back in the 80's when the movie was based.

And it's even better because it doesn't make her hyperaggressive and masculine. She doesn't get portrayed miraculously beating up 200lb mma fighters or any of that bs they do nowadays. "Manhunter", a 1986 Michael Mann(Miami Vice, Heat, Collateral) film was the first movie that Lector was portrayed in. It was remade after this as "Red Dragon" so that Hopkins could reprise the role, and while not bad, I prefer "Manhunter".
The tale of a very troubled and traumatised Profiler(the agent who captured Lector) who hunts a spree killer that butchers entire families once a month like a werewolf.
Creepy, disturbing and haunting, with a soundtrack that acts like a narrative device for the film. The movie evokes the fever dream atmosphere of hunting a monstrous throwback to an earlier stage of human evolution.

the year it swept the Oscar- Picture, Director, Actor, Actress and Screenplay, the host of the ceremonies- Billy Crystal, was wheeled in at the beginning as Hannibal Lecture- in the face mask and straight jacket. The film was out in February 91 and sustained it's power for a year- winning in March 92. That rarely happens- films released later in the year usually win.

"He gutted this man - with what?" (Technically, that's called "disembowelment".) After beating the last guard, Hannibal turns, scans the floor and picks up a small white pen-knife. Then says, "Ready when you are, Sgt. Pembrey." Ready for what? We all find out. A short, sharp blade is so useful to make tight, curving cuts. Like around-eyes. Like around-lips. Around ears. Noses. Oh so handy!
In the follow-up film, we get a lesson in the historic use of disembowelment, particularly as it related to one Italian family's history. But we also get a reminder that, in many of the finest restaurants, chefs come to the patrons' table for the final steps in certain meal preparations, let's say. It's supposed to be very charming, very posh and swank. Haute cuisine, indeed.

Great reaction to a classic! A movie that sticks with you long after watching it the first time. Hannibal and Red Dragon were both great follow-up movies as well. I thought Red Dragon was the better of the two but again both are worth watching.
The prequel, Hannibal Rising, was also worth a watch though a step below the other movies. Just my opinion. Was always going to be tough doing a young Hannibal story because no one can play the Hannibal role like Anthony Hopkins. Worth watching just for the Hannibal backstory and depictions of Hannibal as a younger psychopath and why he became what he did. Truly grim.

If you want more Clarice backstory, the best way is to read the novel 🙂 This movie is actually a very faithful adaptation of the novel, though the novel obviously gives you way more details about such things as the characters' personal history. "The silence of the lambs" novel is preceded by "Red dragon" that has been turned into a movie twice, but both times with less than stellar results. The story centers around Will Graham, the man who caught Lecter (who is already imprisoned here), who gets persuaded by Jack Crawford to do one more job for the FBI: going after the titular serial killer, initially referred to as the Tooth Fairy. (Chilton was flattering himself when he said Lecter sees him as his Nemesis: he really sees Graham as that.) They are successful, but not before Red Dragon, set on Graham's trail by Lecter, almost kills Graham and scars him for life, and is then shot to death by Graham's wife. (This is why Crawford absolutely hates Lecter, something that is only hinted on in the "Silence of the lambs" movie.)
The "Red Dragon" novel is the greatest in the Lecter series, but as I said, both movies based on it are letdowns. "Manhunter" (1988) is a shrill movie with over-loud colors and imagery, and the portrayal of Hannibal Lecter by the normally gifted veteran Brian Cox (Logan Roy in "Succession") is grotesquely overplayed, totally devoid of Hopkins' refinement and subtlety. The "Red Dragon" movie from 2002 is better on paper, but suffers from a cast that, again on paper, is stellar but almost everyone is horribly miscast. Edward Norton, Ralph Fiennes and especially Emily Watson are all woefully unsuitable for their parts - only the late Philip Seymour Hoffman performs well as his sleazy reporter. Anthony Hopkins being visibly eleven years older in a movie that supposedly predates "The silence of the lambs" obviously makes the experience even more uncomfortable.
"Hannibal" (2000) is a decent outing, both as novel and movie. It is however the one case of novel and movie differing noticeably from one another. And thrilling as they both are, you can't escape the feeling that something is off about them. The reason is that the characters are not quite recognizable as themselves from the previous movie - not only because Julianne Moore has replaced Foster, the latter declining the part, but because their personalities and behaviour seem weirdly out of character. Probably because author Thomas Harris, for the first time, didn't write from his heart but on demand when he wrote "Hannibal", making the end result enjoyable but contrived. (Later still, he whored himself out to the extent of actually writing a Hannibal Lecter origin story. This book and movie, stuffed with the usual "serial killer's troubled youth" clichés and completely demystifying Lecter's character, should be avoided at all costs. The three season TV prequel "Hannibal", with the great Mads Mikkelsen as the not yet exposed cannibal killer, is highly enjoyable, though.)
To round off this already overlong post: the funniest thing about "The silence of the lambs" is that this was a script that not only (almost) nobody believed in - it was even believed that being associated with it would be damaging to one's future career. It was simply too scary to be taken seriously. But, as we all know, it was a mind-boggling commercial and critical success, becoming one of only three movies in history to win the "Big 5" Academy Awards: Film, actor, actress, director and screenplay. For Anthony Hopkins it was an especially amazing outcome. After decades of hard and obscure work as a character actor, he achived overnight superstardom, an Academy Award, a fantastic and still ongoing subsequent career - and, lest we forget, a knighthood.

I don’t blame you for being wary. Catherine was nice, but it would have been much smarter to tell him to hold on, and you know some people who can help. There is a correct order, so watch these. Dressed to Kill by the great Brian DePalma! U will see many of the themes in this movie, in Dressed. There's also a almost missable mention of Lector, as a footnote on a brilliant pyschiatrist who figures out a problem with a person, near the end of the movie. Next is Manhunter, by the genius Micheal Mann! It's look sound camera work music, all very 80s! Also it stars my favorite Lector! Many of the actors from Manhunter, also in this. Then u have this movie, then Hannibal which is by Ridley Scott and Gary Oldman should have won an Oscar for his part! Last is Red Dragon but u can skip that one, it's more of a Manhunter reboot, but it does say at the end, how he meets Clarice! Another irony here is, the guy who plays buffalo Bill and the guy who plays The Tooth Fairy, are both in Micheal Mann movie, Heat! and Barney is in this, Manhunter, and Hannibal! Also if u watch Clerks and Clerks 2, Jay does a perfect cover of Buffalo Bill! Also he add-libbed his analysis of her being west Virginia, poor white trash, etc. And it was also their first scene together. He said he completely avoided her, before their first scene. She said he truly terrified her! The reason he likes her is because he trusts her, and also she's a real person with real psychological problems, nothing like his normal rich city folk patients. She has no duality or gile, about her.

08:23 "All these men are here are just sexualizing her in some way, shape, or form." That's actually one o the primary themes of the movie. Everywhere Starling turns, men are reducing her to her sex and acting without consideration of her. We're first introduced to this when she's found on the obstacle course and told that her boss wants to see her; the man giving her the message stares after her. Then she gets into the elevator, the only woman in a close crowd of men, dwarfed by them and surrounded by them. Then there's Crawford sending her in "without an agenda" to talk to Lecter, instead of telling her exactly what was going on. Then there's the director of the institution, Miggs, how Crawfuord gets the local police away, how the entomologists interact with her... It doesn't end.
I realize that as a woman the response would be, "Well no kidding it never stops", but this was one of the first major attempts to show that, to try and get the message across to men. We can argue about how effective it was, but at least the attempt was there.
09:32 "Maybe I'm just mean." I think it's just an issue of survival. It's sad but this is the exact sort of set-up a lot of men use to prey on women. That men preying on women, period, is a thing is bad enough.
25:50 I really like the night-vision scene. It's possibly my favorite scene in the movie. That scene was filmed with a green light; Jodie Foster was acting like she was in the dark, and I think did so _wonderfully._ Really sold it, even after having to do a handful of takes. Really, really great acting.
Incidentally, I often think about a TH-camr I've watched. She's a male-to-female transgender, and transitioned while in college. This is only relevant because she said that the only thing she misses about a male body is the strength. Before she transitioned, she changed dorms, as one does. She mentioned just, you know, grabbing a box of stuff and hauling it over to the new dorm. Then she transitioned, and had to change dorms again.
Now, roughly the same distance traveled, the same junk, the same everything--the _only_ difference is her body. With a male body she was able to pick up as much as she could carry and haul it wherever she needed it. With a female body, she had to rest more frequently, and was unable to move as much stuff at a time. The sheer difference in strength between men and women is larger, and more incredible, than a lot of people--at least, a lot of men--realize.
I think about that a lot. I think more men should keep that in mind.

It's an even larger difference with a biological woman. Undergoing the procedures of reassignment and hormone therapy weakens a male significantly, but not to the same level as the average female. There are many things that never change, such as the larger lungs and heart, denser bones etc. Just imagine.
man and woman of the same height weight and age and both exercise. Man will have 60% more muscle mass, 30-50% denser bones, 25% thicker and tougher skin. Larger and stronger bones in the arms and face, thicker blood, more red blood cells, larger lungs and heart, better spatial awareness, mental rotation and faster visual reflexes. And significantly stronger grip. 95%of men have a stronger grip than 90% of women.

@@jameshunt9208 Right, so you take that male body, with all of that, and make it female in nearly every way, it will become, to use your word, as "weak" as a biologically female body. That was the point of my little anecdote. With the surgeries, with the therapies, with all of it the biologically-male body can become effectively no different than a biologically-female body.
All of those differences you mentioned are true. But those are taken away through sex-reassignment surgery and related medications. For all intents and purposes, the "new" body is female.

the first appearance of Hannibal Lector was in Manhunter, a movie directed by Michael Mann (Last of the Mohicans, Heat, many more). some people say it's better than Silence. but both are great for sure. i appreciate that you go into these reactions blind. and l liked that you didn't talk too much. just sayin. it allows us to watch the movie and you at the same time. too much talk can be distracting. keep on rockin

Lecter only ate people who he felt deserved it. The books are excellent.

I think you should skip Hannibal ( they've changed the main actress anyway, cause Jodie Foster didn't wanna play in it, after reading the movie script) and watch instead Red Dragon(2002), the third film, which has very good performances by Ralph Fiennes and Edward Norton.
