    I always found Fred Astaire very attractive in a kind of offbeat way. He certainly mesmerized many movie going women in his day with his unique charm and boatloads of charisma (not to mention his superior turpsecorian skills).
    Fred could certainly float my boat any day!

    Realistically speaking Fred Astaire seemed a most unlikely romantic lead, and yet when he sang these classic popular numbers he conveyed a certain indefinable magic. It goes without saying the dance choreography is simply out of this world.
    One of the great iconic scenes from the golden years of Hollywood musicals.

    Wow. Just wow. It doesn’t get better than this. The beauty, the grace, the music, the dancing - what we’ve lost and what we’ll never be able to duplicate in today’s Hollywood. How lucky we were to have had it.

    Fred was the only movie star who could woo a girl onscreen 30 years his junior and it didn’t somehow come off as creepy.

      He is depicted as reluctantly giving into his deeper feeling, after at first treating her as a nuisance whom he will finance out of duty. He is not a stalker or predator in the story.
      In reality Fred was in the first phase of mourning the wife to whom he had been devoted for 20 years. The last thing on his mind was to flatter himself by a dalliance with a much younger woman, and he could and would not play a guy who fancied one.

    Leslie Caron was so beautiful so charming. So elegant. Yes, Fred is in a class all to himself. I adored him since I was a child. My dad was a great dancer who always wished he had been a professional. He didn't but i grew up watching every old musical on Tv with him when I was a kid every weekend. I used to dance when I was a kid. Started ballet at 5 took dancing lessons seriously for 10 years.

    Without doubt the best number in the film, the fluidity of their dancing is simply breathtaking and they make it appear so effortless which belies the hard work that must have gone into it. Superb!

    • @johnstewart6366
      @johnstewart6366 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Traveller Fair: "...hard work..." Add planning, blocking, camera and sound angles, etc. Fred rehearsed every dance number he did for a minimum of 2 weeks, up to six weeks for some of the more complicated routines !! There was a dance number he did with Ginger Rogers (dammit, I can't remember the name of the film) where they climbed a long set of stairs on camera right.
      They started to shoot the sequence around 6:00 A.M., and finally "rapped" at 11:00 P.M. !! Ginger's feet were bleeding by the time they finished !! (true). Yes, in case nobody knew it, (you could tell from what was on the final "take") he was the consummate pro. ,

    Flawless. If you observe closely, you will notice that neither one of them makes a SINGLE misstep. (disclaimer - I am probably Fred's BIGGEST fan.) Btw, you should also watch the dance number "Sluefoot", from the same movie. It was the first dance number they did together, (recorded out of sequence). At the end, when the group hoists them on their shoulders, you will notice Fred leans toward Leslie, and says something in her ear. There were no mics close enough to record what he said, but it was "...you were beautiful..." (it was the first time they danced together on camera). REAL class !!!

    This is my favourite Fred Astaire clip. So many to choose from as he was just the best most innovative dancer. Caron was classically trained, unlike him, but somehow they just look so wonderful together. Look how generous he is as a dancer with her. It's not just charming but clever. He knows how to show off his partner. She, in turn, is lovely and they have real chemistry.

    Something's gotta giveの歌詞を探してました。歌だけじゃなくて、映画の丁寧な翻訳も大感謝します。本当に本当に大好きなアステア。大好きな足長おじさん。レスリーキャロンもフレッシュでキレッキレで可愛くて大好き。先日BSで放送していて久しぶりに観ました。 この映画、30年くらい前から知っていたし、本当はアステアではなくジーンケリーで作る予定だったとも聞いてました。(怪我で降板のはず)でも、オープニングの右端にいるジュリーとジャービスの絵がレスリーとジーンだったのは初めて気づきました。あれはどう見ても体操選手体系のジーンケリーだと、私は思ってますw

    Despite being a massive Astaire Rogers fan, I think this scene is the epitome of Astaire’s elegance. Mixing the stiffness of a tuxedo that has been made slightly less formal with the soft shirt and turndown collar with a very suave and discreet mannerism. Obviously because this Is Fred, he’s never missing out on the details: The lapel carnation is still there!

    Brilliant song, when they made this actors had to be capable of doing anything! Not just one type of film, whatever studios wanted. James Stewart even took a turn as a song and dance man.

  • @richardlee8495
    @richardlee8495 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    for some reason this movie works. and this wonderful song/number is an important part of it look at Funny Face, for instance. for all Audrey Hepburn;s charm, and limited song and dancing, it fails because Fred and Audrey do not work together, like Fred and Leslie. funny, but oh so true. the last really good number Fred did in a musical, and he would probably admit it. afterwards, he knew when to quit.

    I don't follow the subtitles, but the tune and the lyrics are superb. Astaire and Caron make an unlikely pairing due to the age difference. But who cares ?

    • @mauricioduron3193
      @mauricioduron3193 9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      +pertinax The age difference, indeed. And yet, 'Daddy Long-Legs' is the 1955 musical adaptation of Jean Webster’s 1912 novel. In movies, Mary Pickford, Janet Gaynor and even Shirley Temple had a go of it. There’s even an anime version.
      The story deals with a wealthy businessman, benefactor to the protagonist, a young girl in college. The two have never met. In the movie version, he decides to do so but does not reveal his identity. Family and friends advise against any perceived impropriety. Soon after, he develops affection for her (this sequence) so he chooses to stay away. Long after, he will reveal his identity and they do become romantically involved.
      BTW: the revelation sequence is another delightful, brief, sequence. Look up under ‘Daddy Long Legs (1955) Part 15/15’ here.
      Where casting matters are concerned, which male star of the time other than Astaire, 54 at the time, could have performed these musical numbers? Without him, no movie, I should think.The same applies to Astaire and Cyd Charisse in ‘The Band Wagon’, 1953 and in ‘Silk Stockings’, 1957; or Astaire and Audrey Hepburn in ‘Funny Face’, 1957, all highly treasurable flicks not to be missed.
