Adventure in Oriflamme Canyon Trail - Anza Borrego, California

- In this episode of TrailRecon, Regena and I head to the Oriflamme Canyon Trail, located in Banner, California, looking to have a fun day of off-road adventuring in our Jeep Wrangler 392.
I’m also going to do something I’ve never done before…give the trail a score. I’ve been asked many times to rate the various trails I’ve been on and after giving it a lot of thought I’ve come up with criteria that I’ll use to rate this and future trails. Make sure to watch the whole video to find out how I scored this trail.
After airing down our tires at the trailhead and putting our Jeep into 4-wheel drive, we climb our way through the Chariot Mountains before descending towards the Anza-Borrego desert, then work our way back into the mountains along the Rodriguez Spur Truck Trail. The total distance we cover in this adventure is just over 17 miles on this looping trail, which is used by off-roaders, hikers, and others looking for some off the beaten path high desert camping.
The start of the trail is a fairly easy dirt road with loose rocks and a few ruts along the way, but as we head down the backside of the mountain, we discover it won’t be quite as easy as we thought it would be. This trail ended up being more difficult than we anticipated, but nothing that any four-wheel drive with high clearance can’t handle.
This off-road journey takes us through some breathtaking scenery and different types of terrain. The landscape looks so different from the first time we hit this trail together in January 2016. Back then, the landscape was mostly brown, dry, and dusty. Today, the mountains are covered in lush green vegetation and flowers are blooming everywhere. We can’t help but stop and admire all the plant life, including one that is unique to this region that was particularly interesting.
I also redeem myself after forgetting the propane the last time Regena and I hit the trail. With fuel for the camp stove, Regena can finally prepare that delicious lunch she had planned for last time we venture off-road and we enjoy a great meal while taking in the scenery at one of the terrific campsites we discovered.
We hope you enjoy coming along for the ride with us on this episode!

I'm super jealous you got a 392! I love them. Great video. 👍👍
Don't forget to top off your blinker fluid before going out. Thanks for all the great videos!
I enjoy these videos when you both are together. She seems like a great pilot and co-pilot. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks! I couldn't ask for a better co-pilot, although for as much as she was behind the wheel this trip, I think I was the co-pilot!
Man that 392 looks amazing
Thanks, I'm still super happy with it!
Brad, I know that it doesn't seem like much to most folks, but I wholeheartedly and sincerely appreciate it when you address the finer points of responsible trail riding such as closing gates behind you, leaving no trace, and other trail ethics tips. As a park ranger, I truly appreciate your diligence and attention to these considerations. Fantastic content, as always. Well done, sir! 👍🏼
I like this new style of videos. Great work and I like the scoring factor of the trails as well. Thank you
Thank you and so great to hear!
@@TrailRecon Thank you for not charging us a Patreon fee to see the coordinates of the trails - Much appreciated!
Watched your test clip with you and Marco. Then he bought one. The King Jeep!
Watching Trailrecon on my lunch break.....lovely
That 392 sounds beasty!!!!
Greetings from New Zealand 🤙🏽
Safe Travels team
Hope lunch was tasty!
This is my type of video, My wife and I love you guys. Keep up the amazing adventures!
Right on, thank you so much!
That is so cool that you are doing this with your wife!! Making memories you will NEVER forget! I can only imagine the time and effort it takes to film something like this, even using a drone at times?!? Also, really enjoyed watching Regina preparing the lunch, always looking for simple ideas for my wife and I to enjoy on the trail. We spend the Summers in South Fork Co. and take the Rubicon over all trails towards Lake City. Thanks for your work making this such an enjoyable channel.
great video really enjoyed it
Glad to hear it!
Loved the added how to make the meal part! Nice addition
This looked like so much fun, and Regena looked like she had a blast as you were filming. Thank you for adding the co-ordinates. Very helpful for when I come down there this year.
That would be a good track to do on horseback to relive the life of those amazing cowboys of the past. Or 4wd. Thanks for sharing.
Love your channel, and love seeing you and wife together on the trails. ✌❤🙏
Enjoyed the video and the TrailRecon rating system. Thanks for your time making the videos
This trail looks so beautiful and chill. More than just a boring fire road but nothing hard at all. You don’t need to focus on the trail and damaging anything or getting stuck every second, you can just take it slow and take the scenery in and enjoy the trail and everything surrounding it.
Very true!
Great content as always. Thanks for sharing. The 392 is quite a beast
Love your videos. Keep up the great work. You encouraged me to get a jeep rubicon, so I ordered me a 2022 a rubicon, I can't wait to hit the trails.
So beautiful and open! Thanks for sharing this and all the gorgeous places you go! 🥾🥾😎
Thanks for watching!
Brad as always I love seeing you and Regina out and about. Love the 392 along with the trail rating system. Well done M8.
Beautiful scenery, awesome video as always Brad and Regena!
Thank you!
Exciting to see y'all cross by the PCT. I thru hiked back in 2014, and any time I see familiar areas like that, all the memories come flooding back!
Thanks for answering my question about which comms you use on the trail. Much appreciated
We just hiked that section of the PCT yesterday and watched the video today in a BnB in Julian. We recognized the spots you stopped and camped where there was the lonely hiker in the background. Thanks for this different perspective of this beautiful area. Anza Borrego SP is a place I want to come back to explore in a vehicle as well.
I'm glad you remembered the gas tank this time.🤣 what a beautiful jeep you have
Fantastic area, great video work as usual. Cheers
5 out of 5 for bringing all the lunch stuff. great video
Great trail video. Makes me want to go back to Oriflamme again soon. Just on the other side of the small creek at that large campsite you can find several morteros ground into the large boulders, and a short walk further east will take you to the stone foundations of several buildings where the CCC was located while they built the Mason Valley Truck Trail that goes up to Cuyamaca (there is a locked gate where the trail meets Hwy 79). Tons of history in that area. And the Rodriguez obstacles are no joke but a lot of fun with the right rig.
Been doing this trail for years. Love it. Taking a buddy and his kids out there this weekend.
I subscribed for the diesel content and stayed because I legitimately love Brad’s demeanor and lifestyle, and he has such a wonderful attitude about life and enjoying his passions.
Also, I did buy the diesel and programmed it, and I wouldn’t sell it for anything 😊. Thanks so much for all the information!
Thank you!
Man, I am loving this new 392 Jeep JKU build. So good to see you and Regina out on the trails. Great video, Brad.
Nice job remembering the propane!
Thanks for sharin'.... red 392 is great, enjoy.
Oh man, being in San Diego I've wanted to do this one forever! Looking forward to it even more now.
Hey brotha! I’ve been watching your videos as of March of 2021 when I started my chemotherapy journey. I watched sooo many of your videos that I fell in love with the jeeps you had and I wanted one for myself. Even tho I didn’t have one at that time of my chemo journey I still wrote down the mods I’ve always wanted to get lol. I beat cancer nov 5th of last year and the first week of December my wife surprised me with a 2015 JK Sahara. Oh boy the things I did to it within a few months definitely emptied my pockets lol. Till now I still continue to watch your videos and it really helped me in the process of my chemotherapy, because while I felt like crap, you made me dream about owning a Jeep of my own, and enjoying the Beauty of life with friends hitting the trails. There’s still plenty of stuff I need to do before that as I’m still recovering , but thank you for making the videos you do as they truly helped me a lot! I’ll be a fan for life! Much love from So Cal!
Thank you so much for your comment and so great to hear you beat cancer! Have fun out there with you new Jeep!
Another great Sunday with you two; enjoyed tremendously 😎😎😎👍👍👍
Beautiful video and nice to see you and Regina enjoying together that great trail and what can I say about that awesome Jeep 392...really impressive. Thanks Brad for another excellent video.
Thanks 👍
Beautiful co-pilot what a trooper wish my wife was as adventuresome
Loving Regina (hope I spelled that right) being with you and being comfortable with the process. These are great, slow down the pace and enjoy the simple things, videos. 👍👍
Love your channel! I very rarely...if at all comment much. But would love to see videos of the mods/upgrades you do to your rigs.
Thanks! I film in the garage from time to time, but it make the process pretty slow installing stuff, but I do try to do updates on the upgrades from time to time.
Really enjoyed the video Brad and Regena! Definitely looked like you had a great day!
Nice video , beautiful landscape !
I enjoy the trail score at the end! Love the 392 especially in red. Hope they are still around when I can buy one.
That's an awesome video. I like it. And the trail is so beautiful. Wish I could be there with my jku. Greetings from Southern Germany.
Your videos are awesome. Makes me wanna start making mine more serious!
absolutely love those wheels on that truck, I have the same ones on my suburban with KO2's so now I'll do the KM3's with my Silverado and those wheels when my ZR2 Arrives
I really enjoy the videos with you and your wife.
Thank you!
So just a little history of how I ran into your awesome channel. I looked up how to make a good off road video on TH-cam and your channel popped up. After watching that episode of you showing your recipe of how you make your video’s, I then watched your latest video which is this one and “wow”…. I can clearly see how you put the magic to work! Awesome job and I just subscribe! Hope to be at your level one day.
Thank you and welcome to the channel!
Another great video Brad. Love the 392. Can’t wait to see the next adventure you make. Keep them rolling.
My rule of thumb about gates is, if there is a gate, best not to go through it. Period. Many decades ago, I wound up on the wrong side of a gate and was forced to find and alternate path back to the main highway. A locked gate that says do not enter and violators will be fined(when you are on the other side already)is bad news. Even if it is where you were at, there is a possibility that someone will put their own padlock on that chain and you are screwed. lol (short of taking matters into your own hands)
It was nice to finally meet you on the trail Saturday. We (group of five vehicles) were finishing our day going in the opposite direction as you were beginning your decent. Great job on your rating system and as a follower on your channel I would agree with your assessment of 10 out of 15. I do prefer going up Oriflamme Canyon Trail to add a bit more challenge. Thanks for the cool video.
When I was in the army at fort Bliss we would go train in new Mexico. And it just so happened that their state plant was the yucca plant. Well we plowed over so many of those things going in to lay our howitzers countless times haha
The trail score is a great new addition! Thanks-
Another great video, looking forward to the next one
Your vids are always so fun to watch. Thanks for this new rating system you've come up with. With new Jeeps popping up in our family, this system will help us choose trails to fit the entire family's desires and skills.
Your videos are so awesome ! Spent a week in Moab last month, now I want to go further south and west !
Man the quality of the production of this video is amazing… looks like something straight outta cable television.
Thank you so much!
The 392 looks so good in red. Will you need to regear it with the 37s? Cheers from Canada
The extreme recon package comes with 4.56 gears, so we'll see if I need to regear down the road.
does anyone know ??? they say that soon will be available first time the diesel wrangler in xtreme recon trim. does anyone know ??/
You can actually eat the Yucca flower and if you cut it down and dig out the center underground it tastes like heart of palm. My family makes flour from the heart of the yucca for cakes. You can also boil the roots and use it as soap/shampoo. I’m from Campo Indian reservation off Interstate 8.
I love how you put the coordinates on screen. That is very considerate for followers to go where Trail Recon goes. 👍🏼 The 392 sounds great. New Magnaflow? Very interesting to see your rating scores.
Watching your videos guys, made me relax..because of the view..❤️❤️
Brad are those the KC Highlites with amber covers on your front bumper?
They are, Flex Era4's
So great to hear!
I'm so jealous of you guys out west and the trails y'all have. Over here in the east, we got gates, gates, and oh would you look at that? More gates lol
Brad,
Totally taking the wife on this trail🙌🏾. The Picture This App totally keeps our daughters engaged when we hit the trails. Thanks for sharing and your channel has enriched our lives since your first videos.
Love the new Jeep, Brad!
Awesome video & really like your new trail rating system. I recently purchased a 2001 Dodge 2500 4X4 with 360 gas engine & hope to set it up for your style of trails. Thank you for sharing another great trail ride.
Enjoyed it :o) Great little trip.
Glad you enjoyed joining us!
Great video. My wife and I recently started our own channel, 50+ years around the sun. We just bought our 3rd jeep, wrangler unlimited Sahara 2017. We are looking forward to new adventures that our jeep will provide. Keep up the great work👍
Good thing you topped off the blinker fluid before this adventure. 😉🤣🤣
You got that right!
fun video, great area to drive around in over there!
Love the new rig!
I like the new grading system! It will be useful to compare with other trails in the future 👏👏
I remember passing you on this trail when your silver ruby was still stock. I was with a group of JKs (I was in my black CJ7) you were going up the trial as were were descending down the trail. There was also some sort of cross country running race going that day too. Just looking at my Gaia logs, I think it was on 4/23/16. We did The bolder field off of Rodriguez trail (right side face north/west
We just picked our 4 d Rubicon can’t wait to go 4x4 wheeling thank you
Congrats!
Love the view of the mountain..WOW!
I've seen where they take that extra black trim off of the fenders to clear larger tires
Have you had any issues going to 37s? Aside from the rubbing do you think you will need to re gear? Canadian veteran here I'd love to send you some patches
The extreme recon package comes with 4.56 gears, so we'll see if I need to regear down the road. Thanks for your service!
Love the videos of the trails you travel. I, however, live in the southeastern US. Any good ideas for trails in this neck of the world
Hey, Brad. You should get a drone. Would make your life easier and we would get great shots. Thank you for taking us with you. Great work, as always.
Looks like a fun trail to explore. The scenery looks awesome.
It is!
I like your trail scoring system. I'd like to see more videos like this with your rating. Especially trails around or close to San Diego thank you
Nice video Brad and Regina good showmanship.
Thanks 👍
When you went over the goose gear items , I thought I hope he didn’t forget the items for Regina to cook with. Great job Sir. Love the channel, keep them coming.
Hi Brad can you give us a short video of just how the 392 is different than other JLU's? I havent driven other wranglers but my 392 rides soooo nice. My First Edition doesnt even compare. Love the video and I love how much you both love your 392. My wife loves the sound ours makes LOL. We are all so fortunate to have such freedom. P.S. we like Regina more than you now. LOL.
Great trip!! Love teh scenery and the rating system. Until next time... Travel Safe.
Thanks! 👍
Oriflamme/Rodriguez Canyon were the first trails I ever ran in my jeep back in 2010. I don't live in San Diego now, but some day I want to go back run the trail again.
"Right answer," I love it! I've been happily married for 39 years. I know I'm happily married because my wife told me I am! 😁
Rad quick run Brad.
Love the idea of you doing trail ratings !
Nice trail to break in the new ride. Is that a CV AXEL ON THE FRONT DIFF ? Did or do the new jeeps come that way from the factory ? It would be nice to see an episode explaining that and the obvious reason why its better . Will it be stronger than the stock axel shaft , comparable to a RCV joint or weaker ? CHEERS AND SAFE TRAVELS Steve h.
Beautiful trail and Jeep. I had plans to make it further west from Ky 3 yrs ago into Nevada and Cal but due to an aged and ailing mother (92) we didnt make it. Then Covid plus mom still. But I still have hopes of doing the trip this fall. Until then I watch video’s of yours and others. We love Ouray/Telluride area and Moab as well...
I hope you are able to make the trip soon, so much to see and explore out here!
I enjoy watching these videos keep up the good work
Thanks, will do!
Stay safe out there and thank you for you and your family for your service
Great show
cant wait for the walk around video of this 392. and an explanation of how you're dealing with paying for premium fuel right now lol
Brad quick recovery on your wife's driving
Michelle and I have had a 2018 Rubicon for a couple of years, so our Jeep-to-Brains ratio is still very high at this point. First, I just want to thank you and Regina for teaching us so much. Your work has been extremely helpful and encouraging. Two things I'd love to see you do. #1, when you click your lockers or disengage the sway bar, it would be illuminating if you would say so. Seeing what kind of terrain triggers that reaction in you would help us to know when to do it ourselves. #2, seeing the hairy shelf roads in this Oriflame Canyon video, I'd love some advice about what to do if you meet someone coming the other way. Backing up for half a mile is the answer, I guess, but it seems pretty scary. Any tips or thoughts? I know shelf roads aren't your favorite thing, either.
Nice trail tour ! I want to get down to San Diego this year , planning to spend a week or two traveling to south Texas from near Seattle where I live now but my route down and back is up in the air right now . How are the gas prices now in the San Diego area ? I was born and raised in San Diego area and moved up here shortly after turning 62 so I do like to get down that way to see friends and old haunts . The east county area is where I spent most of my time , used to go up Pine Creek rd. and take the different splits it had in the mining area up there and come out on Sunrise hwy. although last time (about 25 years ago) I was up there a lot has changed , not sure those old trails are even accessible these days .
Been meaning to post this.....Why did you change up from the BFG KO2's you usually run to the MT's? I would have thought the KO2's would have been a better choice for all the highway driving on the trips you have planned? The video? Up to your usual high standards of production, thanks!
What happened to the Patriot Camper?
We'll be taking it out soon, but don't really use it for day trips.
Love your video's - really enjoy Regena being a part, that alone has my wife interested now - thank you both for that. Really like the new rating idea, may I ask - have you thought about adding a scale for those of us that tow trailers? Thank you for sharing as always we really enjoy the trail adventures - I like the tech stuff as well.
Thank you! I think adding trailer rating could be challenging since there are so many variable with trailer capability, size, etc. I've taken my trailer on some trails I wouldn't advice other owners too....
@@TrailRecon You are correct on that point. We do run with a large camper for off road - Conqueror UEV 490 - This was a compromise to get my wife Overlanding with me and to be honest I have a hard time sleeping on the ground anymore - roof tents don't work for us with two large dogs LOL
Thank you, and I hope you and your wife have many great adventures! I love getting out in nature and away from all the hustle and bustle, but I also enjoy finding ways to do it comfortably. I agree with you 💯 about not enjoying sleeping on the ground anymore...my bones are not as young as they once were. 😊
