We Traveled 1,000 Miles Searching for an Epic Campsite

- We pack up our Jeep Wrangler and leave San Diego, California to meetup with some old and new friends for an overland adventure along Highway 395 that will take us more than 1,000 miles north into Oregon. Along the way we will explore the Bodie Ghost Town, some scenic off-road trails, search for the best camping spots, and enjoy some delicious camp cooking.
Our caravan consists of a Ford F250 towing a trailer, a Jeep Gladiator, Ram Power Wagon towing a trailer, a well built Toyota Tacoma, and our Jeep Wrangler 392 towing our Patriot Campers Trailer. It was my job to lead this overland expedition and I spent a lot of time planning and coordinating this journey... I hope it all comes together in the end.

Pro tip. Canned diced potatoes are actually pretty good, and they are pre (par) cooked. Great for camping and don't use a lot of fuel to cook. Just par boiled potatoes that don't need refrigeration.

As much as I prefer to cook from scratch I think boxed mashed potatoes would have been fine.

Going to Bodie really is going back in time. Call ahead and schedule the tour. You learn so much and they take you inside one of the mines. You can even take the back way to Hawthorne Nevada. Air down. Watch the stream levels and the bowling ball size rocks that appear out of nowhere.

Brad, I love and appreciate your videos! They are therapy for me. My wife and I picked up an 80th Anniversary Gladiator 2 years ago to aid us in our adventures here in the mountains in NY. I wanted to give you my 2 cents on Starlink and our personal experience.
Starlink is a total game changer! My young family and I live and camp throughout the Adirondacks where there is ZERO service in many places. I was skeptical at first but once I was getting equal to and/or better than 5g speeds in areas where there was no service, I was sold. Sometimes the satellite will sit on its stand on the ground and sometimes we mount it to a long telescoping metal pole on the side of our rig to give it better clearance when there's a heavy tree canopy overhead.
Our last time at Meachum Pond (another dead spot) we had 5 people connected throughout our 3-4 days there. I tap youtube videos and they load as quickly as they do when connected to my at-home Spectrum wifi.
Of course, it's not always perfect (although most of our experience has been). It's surely a huge net positive and has made my late nights at camp much more entertaining when everyone's asleep.

I have been to Bodie several times over the years. The best trip we had going into Bodie was from Mono Mills around the eastern side of Mono Lake and up an old trail into Aurora. We would base camp near June Lake and set off to explore. Not only is there some great history to Aurora, but you will find some hidden treasures. Geologically speaking, you want to look up the Long Valley Caldera. My first trip was ten years before any type of GPS device hit the market. It was all about USGS maps and a compass. Doin' it old style. Putting down GAIA (or other GPS related mapping and direction finding devices) for a trip like this could up the adventure. Just follow the old narrow gauge rail line from Mono Mills to Bodie. Late spring or early fall is the best.
Man... with each new vid, I'm more and more envious. With my two closest off-road buddies still working, I'm tied down to their work schedules. Thanks for all the exploring you do. It gives us a never-ending list of places we need to visit! haha
Or make some solo trips.. then your buddies might be envious..
Gotta just get out there! Maybe there is a local off roading group near you?

@@regenakowitz Have you used fried egg rings made of silicon? I love mine. They make the PERFECT shape for an egg McMuffins on the Trail and also optimize frying space space so everyone eats at once!

You should keep a tenkara rod in your Jeep. They are perfect for streams and creeks, and need minimal tackle. They are great travel rods (they don’t take up precious space), and they usually come with a hard case. And they bring a little challenge to fishing.

Very well planned and executed on it. Leading and hosting a group needs a good amount of preparation time and you invested it which was obviously appreciated from your friends.

Well I miss watching Marco doing his fantastic cooking. This group seem very mellowed and simple but you got great camping spots. Not as adventurous as previous terrain with rocky challenging road. But happy travelling and I love to watch this channel and the different composition in the group. Good job.

Loving the 392 content! I was never the biggest fan of Wranglers, but the 392 has changed my mind and is definitely on my list of dream vehicles to own!
I was watching a Meecum auction recently. A new, stock, low mile 392 went on the block. It sold for $90K... The last of the stock V8's....

We have been to Bodie many times, so glad they are restoring the place, it needs it. Love the way you all travel and camp too. There are beautiful areas others never get to see

Bodie is a must stop. Just like you i need to go back and spend more time looking around and get the stamp mill tour also. Next year you should look into traveling the coast on the way up to the expo. Redwoods, Beaches and clear clean rivers you can see to the bottom.

Awesome! My grandfather grew up In Bodie and my Great Grandfather was the Mine Forman in the early 1900's. Ive been there many times and got great tours from my Gramps when he was alive. Their family home is one of the ones still there. Its "The house of Welch". The only House in town that had a bath tub! looking forward to making a trip back out there!!

I think that if she explained her method as she prepares the meals it would be a big help. I have an Omnia Oven that I haven’t tried out yet.

I love the Oregon content. Its my home state and since I no longer live there it brings enormous amounts of nostalgia to have you covering places I grew up visiting. Excellent work.
Oh Yeah nailed it - the whole East side of OR State has cool history, scenery and Indian artifacts - some quite good wineries too
Drove by that campsite last Oct (we were trying to avoid smoke from the fires). Original destination was Rock Creek. The mosquitos were something we wanted to avoid, plus we had just dropped camp elsewhere. Ended up seeing fall leaves dusted with snow. Amazing timing that only happened because we were forced North of Mammoth by the fire. Probably only looked like that for a few days at the most. Beautiful though. Cheers
Hello Mr, I’ve been watching a lot of your videos/trips and I’ve enjoyed all specially this one which is a great route to see many places and mostly been next to that beautiful river, I do hope to meet you one day and hopefully join you on one of those trips, you take care and thank you for showing me around on those off-road trips through your eyes.

Glad you finally made it to Bodie! I’ve been a few times but I always seem to miss the stamp mill tour. The area is one of our favorites but yeah the gas prices in Bridgeport are crazy high. Thanks for the great videos.

The guys with the MOUNTAIN HOUSE food are guys after my own heart , KEEP IT SIMPLE , FAR less stuff you have to think about. My favorite mtn. house food is BEEF STROGANOF , it has never let me down , spaghetti is also really good.

I n 1969 I was assigned as a young IDMT with the 7394 MUNNS, a radar squadron on a mountaintop overlooking the Pacific Ocean just north of North Bend/Coos Bay cities. I fell in love with Oregon's coastline and its rivers. Our CO, Col. Walt Jampsa, bought a beautiful boat and an amphicat for the sand dunes we could sign for and use. The Rogue and Umpqua were my favorites to fish. Ten Mile Lake was great for fishing and water skiing. My family dispersed camp all along the Rogue and have camped where you camped. Regina's meals and incredible culinary creations looked amazing, especially the bangers and mash. My first taste of it was from the hands of my English sister-in-law. Now I'm craving some! BTW it's funny to see a retired Chief on KP duty, Awesome vlog and adventure, Brad.

@TrailRecon you might want to point out to the guys in the KCHilites Gladiator that their Icon Vehicle Dynamics Billet Rear Lower Control Arms are installed backwards. The FK Rod end goes on the frame and the bushing end goes on the axle. The rear upper is opposite with the bushing on the frame and the FK Rod End on the axle. When properly installed the engraved Icon and logo are both visible at the front of the wheel well. I doubt they've noticed it.

For your friends who had the low trailer battery: We use the Renogy 30A Dc-Dc charger with solar charge controller. We ran 4ga. from the trailer battery box where the charger is to the hitch. Then used a 175a 2 pin connnector for both the trailer and the jeep. We can charge a fully dead 100ah lithium trailer battery in just over 3 hours. But when we need solar, it has a built in MPPT controller.

You should add a link to a telescopic fishing pole. They don't take up much room and you always have it with you :)
Next time you plan a trip to the Klamath River area, you might want to bring along a couple of gold pans! Thar's gold in them thar hills! Geologically, the region is related to the Sierra Nevada: geologists tell is it was a northern portion of the Sierras, wrenched westward as the Juan de Fuca tectonic plate was pushed west. And like the Gold Rush districts along the western slopes of the Sierra foothills, the mountains were mineralized with gold-in-quartz veins.
The region around Happy Camp is also jade country. So, if your interests lean towards rockhounding strongly enough to entice you away from the trout lurking in the river, it has entertainment potential in this as well.
