BEST video ever Tony, but you got me sleeping on the couch for a month. First, my engine stand chipped the bathtub porcelain and all the sandblasting ruined the bidet. Then I broke the medicine cabinet mirror when I took it down to roll my pushrods on. On the plus side, I ported my showerhead and it went from low-flow to mofo.

I did this on the cilinderhead of my dad's Ford OHC Pinto engine when i was 16. Now over 40y ago... It had a blown HG so the head had to come off anyway. So i took the chance to apply some tuning knowledge that i read in a British magazine called popular mechanics. On some 2valve/cil heads the valves are partly shrouded by the walls of the combustion chamber. Sometimes it really pays to DE-shroud them a bit by removing some of the wall of the combustion chamber. The effect is earlier and better intake /exhaust flow. I did this on the Pinto OHC head (hard work because the head was made of cast iron) and also on a Volvo B230 redblock head (a lot easier because the head was made of aluminium). I never told my dad about the Pinto head but after i had the HG installed and the car was back up and running he was very impressed by the way the engine performed. It was only a 72hp 1.6L but it ran like a 90hp 1.8L The same applies to I6, V6 or V8 engines, it's just more work. But the gains are bigger! The nice thing about mods like these are that you gain flow over the entire rev range, it raises the torque curve as well as the power curve without having to mess around with cams and cam gears. You would get even better results if you had a machine shop do a 3-angle back cut on the seats. That will greatly improve flow at low valve lift.

If i even thought about doing something like this in my shower, I'd be wearing my ass as a hat! wow! Do have a few questions but will wait till the end as you may easily address them as this build goes on. Have been diehard mopar since high school, im 61 now, thats a long time! always enjoy making them go faster!
First things first, place a painters heavy drop-cloth in the tub. Better yet, use a friends garage (be certain to be a gracious guest) dunno why but I really feel like I needed to add that second point there. If you work in some one else's space clean yur shit up even when they tell you "don't bother" make the space that you are working in shine before you leave. You will always be welcome back because you are showing a level of respect for yur friend's shit.
Watching this reminded me of the times my grandmother let me wash and prep car parts in the shower she said she did it back in the day so as long as I cleaned up she didn't care
Let them know to be careful. Too much material removed on one cyl, means ALL cyls need same thing, so don't go too crazy on the first cyl. Also, try to stay away from the port floor. Not just because of the ramp, but some cyl heads don't have a thick deck,(less than 5/8), and it's also easy to enter water jackets, if too much material is removed. I can't stress this enough.....DO NOT GO CRAZY ON THE 1ST CYL!!! It's just natural to over do the 1st one. Do minimal on the 1st, repeat for the others, THEN GO BACK, and do more. Better safe than sorry. My first 12.5 to 1 wedge heads got destroyed because I didn't have this advice. Oh, and BE CAREFUL when gasket matching. Bump that bitch the wrong way, and they'll never seal, & you have just made an expensive, time consuming, BRICK. I hope this helps.

Only polished the exhaust ports of course.
I always like the way Ford lays their heads out without the ports having a divider in between .We had made a tool to cut guides quicker on the drill press
Just a suggestion, I use a cheapo shopvac to suck the dust out of the opposite end of the port. Keeps things cleaner and easier to see what I'm working on. It also helps to prevent inhaling the dust. Cheers !!
I just rebuilt the original 350 from my truck, with the GM 193 TBI heads. I only spent about two hours per head on the porting, but the castings were so much cleaner than what you're dealing with. I also used the Harbor Freight sanding cone set after the carbide bit. Fun stuff! One quick tip - the last time the urgent care clinic doctor removed metal from my eye, she recognized me from the previous time. I was wearing safety glasses, but now I wear face-fitting goggles.
This series has inspired me to build a 383 engine block that I bought for cheap a year ago. I would love to see a conclusion to the series, so far the entire series have been incredibly educational. Being a young person in college with little money and having no back round in engine work these types of videos are the basically all I have to work with. If you ever do continue the series I would be great if you make a video on how to remove/install and an engine with out removing the transmission.

I can see your promise of new kitchen flooring turning into a FULL kitchen AND bathroom remodel REAL quick!! When I do stuff like this in my home shop, I prefer to use my variable speed rotary tool and its flex shaft for the finer work such as blending the bowls and guide bosses. The flex shaft is much easier to control and, with a good carbide burr, I can turn the speed down to reduce the risk of damaging the seat if I slip.
Did you guys see the Garage 54 video from yesterday? They made a clear oil pan and filmed the engine running. it was awesome to see how the oil runs through the engine, and what can happen if you have too little oil. The only bummer was they didn't take the car for a drive, but, who can blame them- they live in Siberia.
I rebuilt the auto tranny for my truck one time in my laundry room. Took parts to work and cleaned them and modified them on my lunch breaks. Laid a sheet of plywood across the washer and dryer and used it to assemble the tranny. Fun times, my girlfriend at the time was mortified. hahahaha.
Congratulations to your wife. No doubt that she was counting every second of dust you made, thinking of the cleaning job afterwards. About the basic porting work, even Edelbrock heads require it.

Im an octopus when it comes to cars and motors ...im.not experienced at all just willing to buy new parts and motors for the goal of horsies...i did this to my 1st car a 1980 honda cvcc accord...did it to the heads and the exhaust ...i got the idea from a video game called grand turismo...it is very educational and inspiring game ...at 16 i was the happiest kid with the oldest fastest honda around 1990s ...later i got into few nissans and supras and kept doing the same and enjoying the hell out all the new horsies...i settled with american cars and muscle cars ...i friend of mines is teaching me what he does and its unorthodox builder...he has a nova with spray gun parts and a bad ass regulator that allows him to crank the hell out the power...again im not sure whats what...all i know that he hunts fast cars down for pinks ....so far dude has about 10 won cars and isnt stopping...my uncle was a police mechanic and swears he has what i been looking for .....secrets he swore to keep...i want more ..thanks tony ...ur videos take me much further and i love it

You need to make a electrolyzing tub to clean up the rust to clean the heads and block but use a truck bed with plastic liner or somthing like that for the tub just my 2 cent it needs to be in your trailer park hot rodding play list you make me laugh when I watch your videos keep up the good work
U can also buy indoor grow tents for pretty cheap. U can get a strong 4” inline fan around 150$ and ducting all from the same online hydroponic shop. Probably looking at 300$. U can vent 100% the fumes out the window and have a inclosed space to contain the mess. And u can smoke in a nonsmoking apartment while u work. Not to mention the reflective ability of the Mylar.
What's your take on the valve guide lump? Mow it down and flush with the rest of the port or leave some lump for air flow? Looking forward to seeing the final product!
So for cast iron heads just use a good carbide burr? I've been trying to figure out what I need. I have an iron headed LT1 in my 96 Buick Roadmaster that I want to do some clean up work to. I don't have the money to go all out. I just want to clean up the top end and squeeze as many horses as possible out of it. I was trying to save up for a cam kit too. But this past year has taken everything I have just to survive. Hopefully I can get everything gathered up eventually. Until then I'll live vicariously through Uncle Tony. Thanks for the videos
I can think of 5 landlords right now who would mess their diaper thinking what's going down their plumbing they'll have to fix one day. That said, a series like this is nice to show just how expensive it is to build cheap. How many apartment dwellers are going to know which valve has the 40 degree seat, and what year had the 45 degree seat? How many project cars will sit in the community parking lot as someone tries to diagnose the broken exhaust spring. Its the nickel and dime stuff that grabs ya. You buy a head for cheap...but then you find out what the alternator bracket costs, and that the valve cover you got the great deal on has a different bolt pattern. That's where room to store comes in handy. But out there is someone who tossed together a ride, and they only take it two blocks to the cruise nite at Pep Boy's before the snow flies.
My wife's immediate comment - "don't you even f***ing think of doing that in my new bathroom"... some people just don't appreciate the necessities of life! 🤣

A quick suggestion, stick a shopvac in the other end of the port it should get 90+%.
Just have a helper standing At the breaker box to reset the breaker every time it throws.

Im an octopus when it comes to cars and motors ...im.not experienced at all just willing to buy new parts and motors for the goal of horsies...i did this to my 1st car a 1980 honda cvcc accord...did it to the heads and the exhaust ...i got the idea from a video game called grand turismo...it is very educational and inspiring game ...at 16 i was the happiest kid with the oldest fastest honda around 1990s ...later i got into few nissans and supras and kept doing the same and enjoying the hell out all the new horsies...i settled with american cars and muscle cars ...i friend of mines is teaching me what he does and its unorthodox builder...he has a nova with spray gun parts and a bad ass regulator that allows him to crank the hell out the power...again im not sure whats what...all i know that he hunts fast cars down for pinks ....so far dude has about 10 won cars and isnt stopping...my uncle was a police mechanic and swears he has what i been looking for .....secrets he swore to keep...i want more ..thanks tony ...ur videos take me much further and i love it

You need to make a electrolyzing tub to clean up the rust to clean the heads and block but use a truck bed with plastic liner or somthing like that for the tub just my 2 cent it needs to be in your trailer park hot rodding play list you make me laugh when I watch your videos keep up the good work

U can also buy indoor grow tents for pretty cheap. U can get a strong 4” inline fan around 150$ and ducting all from the same online hydroponic shop. Probably looking at 300$. U can vent 100% the fumes out the window and have a inclosed space to contain the mess. And u can smoke in a nonsmoking apartment while u work. Not to mention the reflective ability of the Mylar.
What's your take on the valve guide lump? Mow it down and flush with the rest of the port or leave some lump for air flow? Looking forward to seeing the final product!

So for cast iron heads just use a good carbide burr? I've been trying to figure out what I need. I have an iron headed LT1 in my 96 Buick Roadmaster that I want to do some clean up work to. I don't have the money to go all out. I just want to clean up the top end and squeeze as many horses as possible out of it. I was trying to save up for a cam kit too. But this past year has taken everything I have just to survive. Hopefully I can get everything gathered up eventually. Until then I'll live vicariously through Uncle Tony. Thanks for the videos
I can think of 5 landlords right now who would mess their diaper thinking what's going down their plumbing they'll have to fix one day. That said, a series like this is nice to show just how expensive it is to build cheap. How many apartment dwellers are going to know which valve has the 40 degree seat, and what year had the 45 degree seat? How many project cars will sit in the community parking lot as someone tries to diagnose the broken exhaust spring.
Its the nickel and dime stuff that grabs ya. You buy a head for cheap...but then you find out what the alternator bracket costs, and that the valve cover you got the great deal on has a different bolt pattern. That's where room to store comes in handy. But out there is someone who tossed together a ride, and they only take it two blocks to the cruise nite at Pep Boy's before the snow flies.
