anyone who appreciates the so-called purism motorcycle should have a Classic 500 in the garage! it is a motorcycle that despite being out of production still fills the eyes! here in Brazil unfortunately there were post-sale problems where the brand ran out of credit! I hope to see more Royal Enfield through the streets!
Seemed like the with baffle had a "cleaner" sound some higher frequency noise had been removed. Neither seemed overly loud, unlikely to upset the neighbors.
Hi Stuart, as a post script, Hitchcocks no longer supply the baffle insert and I was told the silencer internal baffles have been redesigned to render the insert unnecessary. I am pleased with the silencer for my classic 500, received in late January.
Sounds great to me, Stuart, with or without the baffle. It staggers me that you have had complaints for not posting a FREE video. Some people need to have a word with themselves.
Hello Stuart, I liked the sound with baffle in it, without baffle it was like a hollow sound, unlike the CI engines, they had perfect notes. I believe the UCE Engines go well with OEM exhaust. I tried with a short silencer on my Bullet Electra UCE, sound was too loud, heat generated was more, mis-firings in between, pick-up increased but top end speed reduced to 72 Kmph. Sounded like old Bullet only when there was an inclined ascending road and a slight more throttle was given but in idling state it was like a muted, only engine noise. Mileage reduced from 41 Kmpl to 35 Kmpl. I changed back the silencer after two years to OEM silencer. OEM is a blessing, smooth, gradual pickup, less vibrations, more mileage up to 41 Kmpl. For UCE engines, OEM is well engineered for back pressure. I love your videos a lot, stay blessed 👍
@@stuartfillingham My Electra was 2012 model, carburettor based engine and a Transistor Coil Ignition. I believe it does not have an ECU, so it had a constant ignition mapping. I sold it after 6.5 years once my Interceptor came in. I have a quick query. I am owning an Interceptor 650 now, but still I have a strong urge to own a Bullet. In 2020, which is the best single cylinder Royal Enfield to be considered? A Bullet 350 Standard (without self-start it comes with a heavy crank and self start comes with low weight crank) or should I consider a Classic? The Showroom owner is my friend, suggests a Himalayan BS6 that put me in research mode. Thanks a ton for making knowledgeable and clear videos.
@@automotriztechnica the difference between the standard and classic apart from self start is how they operate at low speeds and the pickup thats about it, cant say anything about the himalayan since i have not ridden one yet but it seems like a promising choice, but at the end what matters is that you have fun while riding so i suggest you take them for a spin and decide what suits your riding style or you can say what puts a smile on your face!!! cheers mate!!
I think with out the baffles just gives it that slightly deeper throatier sound great video Stuart , the more I see that chrome tank the more I'm loving it 👍🏻
Fitted the exaust today they don't make any more with the removable baffle it has one mechanically fitted instead sounds great. Cheers for the vidio it was a great help. Ride safe.
Great videos! When the installation video never showed the completed bike, I was left wondering how it looked... Then, a few videos posted, and still no “money shots”. This one opens with a grand entrance that brought a great shout out! ...at least from me! Definitely a much better balance to the look of the bike! Glad it isn’t louder, this bike is not about raw power, but being approachable, all around competent bike with style! Thank you for your help sorting out my break in questions as well! All the best to you and yours!
The weight saving alone makes the new pipe a worthwhile upgrade but it undoubtedly looks a lot better than stock. Improved sound is just the icing on the cake so to speak. Great video, the bike is looking like a piece of industrial art.
Thanks. I like the idea of a TV programme like “Waking The Dead”, dealing with unsolved murder mysteries, that have baffled everyone for decades, until a rather dapper forensic scientist, with a tenacious questioning mind, comes along on his gentleman’s motorcycle and solves the mysteries, showing all the links afterwards...
I always thought on mine it was a raspier sound with baffle & a deeper sound without, I did have the bigger bore down pipe also. That's just how it seemed to me.
Well done video. I also optioned the use of the baffle - Maybe its because I have the piggy back ECU - but I found that without the baffle - the performance felt not as well in midrange rpm then with the baffle. The pig iron short bottle I had on the bike before I sort of suspected to not giving enough back pressure and impacting performance and mileage and to me it seemed that with the baffle, everything just ran a bit smoother with a more polished sound to it' the Hitchcock's pipe is well worth it.
Without the baffle seems to have a sharper "snap" to it. With baffle is better quality sound from what I could detect. A biker would know there's something interesting coming along either way! Great photography btw. Thanks.
I do think the baffle does provide a more rounded more pleasing sound. I have the RE 350 Meteor but decided to get lots of use from the OE exhaust before considering a change. Thanks for sharing your great videos.
My main reason for getting rid of, and destroying, the stock exhaust was because of the catalytic converter. I do not believe in government interference with motorcycle design, and forcing me to have something I don't want. Weight was also a factor. But the most noticeable improvement with the aftermarket exhaust has been the sound. I'm running mine without the removeable baffle, and it actually sounds like a motorcycle should. I'm not getting anywhere near the gas mileage you are, but I have replaced the (again government mandated) EFI with a carburetor that provides a much richer mixture from idle to what is usually my top speed of around 55 mph. While I lost gas mileage (gas in the U.S. is currently right around $3 a gallon) I gained a considerable amount of performance. I have not tried to measure spec sheet performance, but with the EFI I was having serious problems with hesitation and surging while riding, due to a super lean mixture. It also ran very hot. The carburetor conversion solved all this, the hesitation is gone, it pulls hard, the engine sound fills out nicely when you roll on the throttle. I was also able to turn the idle down and get a proper thump thump thump that these bikes are supposed to have. Since I ride for pleasure only, I would be happy with the modifications I have made even if gas cost twice as much.
I enjoyed your review. I definitely liked it better with the baffle. It seems to take the "edges" off and made it sound deeper and more rounded. A real winner!
I preferred the baffle in. I did a similar sound check on my Scrambler. I was lucky it was a completely still day. It's the only video I have of it on my channel. I might have to find my chest mount and go for a ride.
To my non-biker ears, I preferred the sound of the first three runs, listening as the bike road off into the distance from a pedestrian's point of view. The last runs with the baffles, though sounding crisper, sounded a bit metallic top my ears. The first three runs sounded, though muffled, deeper in tone. - I'll get my coat. 😊
Thanks for the honest views on the proposed bsa 650. If it does come into production I believe it will be a winner and triumph must be shaking in thier boots at the possibility of lost sales to this iconic replica.even tough its water cooled. Looking forward with baited breath for the bike to come into production. Great videos and very informative by the way .
In India there is huge market of after market exhausts for Royal Enfield. The best exhaust in terms of size, sound and emission in India is the Short Bottle exhaust (aka Indori exhaust). Its sounds really amazing.
I hear the sounds of Royal Enfield everyday in my life and in my opinion and it sounded better without the baffle because it brings out the originality of a true RE bike LOL from 🇮🇳
Hi Stuart. There is not a lot of difference with the baffle in or out. I have watched lots of videos on bullet exhausts the biggest difference is the weight saving 👌 it may have been windy but she still sounds wonderful. Looking forward to Friday be safe kiddo . Ron.

I get the impression you put your videos together as meticulously as you look after your bikes. Sound with baffle in is softer and to my ear pleasanter, though I did have to listen twice. Btw, thoroughly approve of use of kickstarter. A massively irrelevant point I know but what’s the point of having a heritage vehicle (or whatever you want to call it) unless you can enjoy that sense of engagement. Trying to explain that to my 30 year old son who can’t see the point!
Uniquely, IIRC, the Bullet comes with both electric and kick-start.Perhaps your son would be persuaded with this practical demonstration: Switch on the ignition, then the headlights and let it stand until the headlight starts noticeably losing its brightness. In other words battery is in a significantly depleted State Of Charge (SOC). Turn headlight off and try firing up the engine with the electric start. "Rrr .......................Rrr...................Rrr. No show Joe. Now, with the kickstarter... 1 or 2 prods and..... "Brrroom!!!" Off and running and battery now recharging! Moral of the story: Under reduced SOC or with a worn battery, the starter motor gobbles all available current & power and leaves the coil(s) robbed of enough power to generate a strong enough spark to otherwise get the engine running and thus the alternator starting to recharge the battery
gilburton I am old enough to remember the benefits! My old Norton Commando had a capacitor that could save enough voltage after two or three kicks to generate a spark even when battery was so low you barely got a glow from the neutral light. When I explained that to my son he didn’t know what a capacitor was and asked if was something like a chip. He got really baffled when I told him about the magneto and advance/retard lever on my old ES2...
Yes, the sound seems to be a bit stronger for the driver than for the surroundings. When driving in the late hours in the city I am a bit too shy to pull the throttle too hard 🤭 And, what I also love, is the sound of "cylinder breathing" while I am engine braking, that sound was unavailable with the standard "submarine-type" silencer 😁
I’m going to have to say, there isn’t much difference but I do like it with the baffles a bit more. It just sounds like it’s running a bit better. But it could just be me.
Have you heard about the whistle that was fitted from 2007 to 2010 made bullets its a very pleasing squeaky sound when we leave the throttle just like the supercharger sound on the super bike kawasaki h2. Try that see how you like it. there might be some videos on youtube as well. That whistle was kinda like baffles a pipe with symmetrical holes in it. But the sound it makes when we leave the throttle is just orgasmic. It Sounds Like a Whistle of a humming bird as soon as we leave the throttle.
Its Mr T personally I prefer with the baffles fitted as u pass the camera and ride on slight difference w out its louder and w it its a nicer loud sound
Thanks for the review Stuart. I’ve been hovering over the ‘complete order’ button for a week or two now. The Hitchcock’s muffler looks much better than OEM but I’m just not convinced it sounds much better...Although I admit I’m only getting my comparisons off TH-cam. There doesn’t seem to be anyone doing a quality video in a controlled outdoors environment doing before (OEM) sound bites followed by Hitchcock’s soundbite. When I’m actually riding, the OEM muffler sounds great as I work through the gears, leaning me away from the aftermarket purchase. If we’re definitely getting better sound, mileage and reduced heat from the Hitchcock’s unit, I’ll give in and buy one 🤔 Unconvinced 👍🏼
Jajaja! saludos cordiales.
It did sound better with the baffle in even though you had to listen hard because of the wind noise. Seems like you are really enjoying the Bullet Stuart.
Hi Stuart, if I may ask your opinion on the best Royal Enfield model that would suit a 65 year old 6ft 1in 15st man, 33/34 inside leg, obviously not as flexible as I once was so don't like legs to feel to cramped up. Many thanks Kim.
Love your videos. I used to own an RE Classic 350cc and had changed the exhaust to an "upswept" one. Sounded faboulous and looked stunning. I was looking forward to buy myself a 500 this time but unfortunately RE has discontinued all its 500cc models in India. You are a lucky one to still own this machine. Enjoy!
Sounded nice to my ears but if I had a Bullet, I'd fit a Gold Star pattern track silencer, a bit louder and may even get the Goldie 'Twitter' too! I had one on my C-15 SS 80, when I was a learner. Sounded gorgeous on the overrun! ;-P
Having baffle in should preserve bottom end torque, where the open pipe favors mid range possibly at the expense of the bottom end....that’s another thought....
Since last year this exhaust is available without any baffle. Hitchcocks doesn't recommend to install any additionnal baffle as it could cause excessive heat and discolouration of the pipe. It's frustrating to be unable to enhance the original sound that isn't exactly great to me.
How does the sound (sound-level wise) actually compare to the stock exhaust for bystanders? I like this new exhaust but I wonder if my neighbors will kill me or not...I'd rather have a quiet exhaust system.
I'm curious if you have any experience of the carbury Enfield vibration reduction plate. I saw Hitchcocks sells them. It's made in India buy an Australian man from what I heard. Not sure how essential it is as a mod.
Thanks for this review I found the Goldstar pipe to be better with the baffles too Listening to this video they also are very similar in 'noise' to my hearing..... I had to smile, the baffles do get warm don't they!! Thanks Stu I look forward to the next installment
Hi , i wish to purchase that same muffler as well for my new CLASSIC 500 when i get it . Will you be adding a booster plug or a fuel management upgrade as well ? and changing the air filter as well ? Or are you happy to just run it with the HITCHCOCKS SILENCER only ? Thanks for this video Stuart .
Hi Stuart, awesome video! You mention getting 90 MPG, which is awesome. I have the same bike, and get between 60-65 MPG. Any idea why it might be so dramatically lower? I use 91 octane non-ethanol fuel, upgraded the plug and air filter, and other than that no changes. I'm wondering if it could be that I'm commonly driving between 60-65 MPH, and maybe that is more consumptive. But still, that's a huge difference to what you are getting. Cheers from Minnesota, Paul
Question: On a unrelated subject. What Gasoline Octane do you find works best for the Classic 500 EFI? I really enjoy and appreciate your videos thank you 🙏🏻
Great video ! Even saw a slight smile , did you find money ? I've recently swapped out the cans on my Interceptor and couldn't believe the extra weight ! I wonder how many tons of disused exhaust systems are sat in garages & sheds ? Glad you like them , as for the people that "complain" about not getting the output when they want it , tell them to beggar off !
LOl when you can work out how to control an outdoor environment for filming and sound recording, publish your results the world is waiting.
Great video! Such a beautiful bike! Cheers!
Jajaja! saludos cordiales.
Royalenfield is one of the best motetbike for his price. I have 3 moter bike. Simple and strong reilleble
Very nice Stu and FWIW, I do like the “with baffle” sound better too, although I didn’t find the difference to be too noticeable.
My favorite Long journey
Sounds great Stuart! :)
I like the baffles!
I prefer the tone with the baffle Stu, sounds very sweet...
Gold star exhaust, thats what should be fitted to this bike
It did sound better with the baffle in even though you had to listen hard because of the wind noise. Seems like you are really enjoying the Bullet Stuart.
Hi Stuart, if I may ask your opinion on the best Royal Enfield model that would suit a 65 year old 6ft 1in 15st man, 33/34 inside leg, obviously not as flexible as I once was so don't like legs to feel to cramped up. Many thanks Kim.
Hi not much differance only i prefere with baffles.cheers for vids.keep up good work.👍
Sounds fantastic
Love your videos. I used to own an RE Classic 350cc and had changed the exhaust to an "upswept" one. Sounded faboulous and looked stunning. I was looking forward to buy myself a 500 this time but unfortunately RE has discontinued all its 500cc models in India. You are a lucky one to still own this machine.
Enjoy!
Good evening Stuart, how did you fix your 1901 gasket tapped cover ? Thank you.
Hi, what about the answer ????????
Great video, thanks . ( WITH BAFFLE ) .
Ride Safe .
Nice one and thanks for the add and advise. I am interested to purchase one but the are Currently Not Available.
Just Love it. With or without
How does the sound (sound-level wise) actually compare to the stock exhaust for bystanders? I like this new exhaust but I wonder if my neighbors will kill me or not...I'd rather have a quiet exhaust system.
I do like the silencer makes a whole lot of difference, reflects on the front forks look bad you should take them off.
Hi Stuart, did you fit this without doing a piggyback ECU?
I'm curious if you have any experience of the carbury Enfield vibration reduction plate. I saw Hitchcocks sells them. It's made in India buy an Australian man from what I heard. Not sure how essential it is as a mod.
i want to remove the muffler/silencer because i like the sound but will it damage the engine?
Thanks for this review
I found the Goldstar pipe to be better with the baffles too
Listening to this video they also are very similar in 'noise' to my hearing.....
I had to smile, the baffles do get warm don't they!!
Thanks Stu I look forward to the next installment
Definitely different note quite pleasant are you considering changing the header and removing second cat could be interesting . Good video
Without baffle on mine, love to wake the neighbours up a 6.30am going to work😁
Hi , i wish to purchase that same muffler as well for my new CLASSIC 500 when i get it .
Cheers from Minnesota, Paul
be more gentle with the throttle!
US Gallons are smaller than Imperial Gallons so that might explain it?
Question: On a unrelated subject. What Gasoline Octane do you find works best for the Classic 500 EFI?
I really enjoy and appreciate your videos thank you 🙏🏻
E5, 97 octane
All Time like you
Great video !!
It's not Stu on demand TV !.........now get those Motone indicators fitted I've been waiting ages ! 🤭
LOl yeah I burnt my fingers removing a hot baffle!
