    That first "Oh here's an agate" There was a handful of other rocks there worth picking up..

    • @KatyDidRocks
      @KatyDidRocks  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      :D I think they are ALL worth picking up - the Yellowstone has an abundance of great stones.

  • @lizzymoore54

    Chalcedony is the base rock for agate. The only difference is an agate has " water lines " or banding within it. The banding is either clear Quartz or othe minerals which give agates their color. If you find an " agate " with no water lines then it isn't an agate, it's Chalcedony. Both are a Quartz ( silicate ) but they are a harder stone being as both Chalcedony and true agate are microcrystalline Quartz. Regular Quartz ( macro-crystalline ) is a 7 on the Mohs hardness scale with Chalcedony and agate being about a 7 and 1/2 on the Mohs scale. Regular Quartz can not scratch Chalcedony nor a true agate but they can scratch a regular piece of Quartz. I collect Chalcedony and have a beautiful yellow, translucent " pebble shaped " piece, weighing about 4 pounds. When a flashlight is put onto it, it glows and you can see into it. I also have many transparent smaller pieces which are clear and see-through when a light is put behind them. I also have a few " true agates " but these are much harder to find in my area without traveling a far bit. I found these on vacations . Petrified would is another love of mine as is yours. I enjoyed this video, traveling with you to places unknown to me. Thanks for taking us with you as you hunt your beauties. Do you have any videos of the cutting of your stones? I just keep my in their natural state and make arrangements with mine, in crystal bowls and plates/platters or jars with lights wrapped around them or in the jars. So pretty with the lights on because of the glow they emanate . Looking forward to your next video. Thanks.

      You are probably technically correct - but "Montana Moss Chalcedony" doesn't have much of a ring to it. :D I haven't done any deep research into the specific definition and differences in agates, but I do know that the standard name for them here in Montana is Montana agate. It's an interesting question.

    • @lizzymoore54
      @lizzymoore54 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      KatyDid, I do quite a bit of study on the stones that I collect. So much info., on these rocks/stones on the internet. You are correct when you say " glassy " because that is what silicate turns into with heat and pressure, glass. Agates are usually formed in vugs ( holes ) in host rock and as the host rock degrades, the agates fall out and are washed down to oceans, rivers and streams. The agates are formed from minerals in the water, running down the host rock face, into these vugs and depositing into the holes in the host rock. The colors in agates depend upon the type of minerals in the water. This gives you an idea of just how old they are! True moss agate is a translucent or transparent Chalcedony with green tendrils reaching through-out the stone, which makes it appear to be as moss. Thanks for responding and I enjoyed watching your video. ☺️

      @@lizzymoore54 I didn't know the holes were called "vugs" - thanks for the info! Montana moss agate has beautiful dendrites formed from manganese, or ribbons formed from iron.

    • @KatyDidRocks
      @KatyDidRocks  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also - what kind of rocks do you collect?

    • @lizzymoore54
      @lizzymoore54 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      KatyDid, I collect Chalcedony, Amethyst, Ruby, Sapphire, Gold, Pink Quartz, Petrified wood, agates, Carnelian and just about every pretty rock that Georgia has to offer as well as fossils. I live in South Ga., so mostly fossils and Indian artifacts here but there are sea shells with a thin layers of clear and colored Chalcedony or agate on them. We used to travel to mid and North Georgia for the afore-mentioned gems. We have traveled to Arizona, Utah, Texas, New Mexico, Tennessee and South and North Carolina to hunt gems and rocks. I can't get out like I use to because of health issues but my husband and I found a way around this issue. At Wal-Mart, in the spring, they carry river rock and pond pebbles in 40 pound bags ( for about $3.95 ) and my husband buys me about 4 bags ( approximately 160 pounds ) and I sit on my cart, stick the hose in the bag and rinse the silt off and hunt through them. I've found hundreds of pounds of Chalcedony, petrified wood and even a few semi-precious stones. I give them a mild acid bath using white vinegar and C.L.R. ( which helps remove rust staining from iron rich rocks ) then a baking soda bath to neutralize the acid, dry them and then soak them in mineral oil to fill in cracks and imperfections in the rock. Not all rocks take kindly to the acid bath, like calcite. It totally dissolves calcite! I keep them in their natural state and display them in crystal bowls, vases, platters or pretty glass jars with battery operated lights around the base or in the displays themselves. The light just makes the Chalcedony and agates glow. I even like conglomerate rocks and large river rock that I arrange on the hearth and mantle of the fireplace. I'm rock crazy cause ROCKS RULE! 😉

    I think the white on some rocks is calcium, not 100 percent but maybe

    • @KatyDidRocks
      @KatyDidRocks  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Could be! I've searched online for an answer, but no luck so far. I may ask in one of my FB rockhounding groups. The white is pretty hard, very similar to the agate itself. Thanks, TheMogjo! :)
