Always look back at the way you came. That way you will recognize things when you start back. This applies to most walking sports.

Those are great tips. Here is another tip: If you are going on a field trip with your rockhounding group to a location known for a special type of rock, DO NOT get so focused on finding that type of rock that you ignore all the other good rocks. On an Arizona fieldtrip last month, I found a rare type of rock that our guide told us had only been found in a very limited amount in that location on only one previous trip! The rock I found was near where we had all parked along side the unpaved road and had been walked past by at least 20 people eager to get to the "good" collecting area known for a less rare type of rock. Always make time to look around near the parking area while others are scrambling to get further afield. You can also sometimes find piles of good rocks near the parking area that much more fussy people discarded on a previous field trip as not being worth hauling home. Some of those "discarded by others" rocks have proven to be beautiful when I cut them into slabs. You cannot always tell what will be a "good" lapidary rock by just looking at its outer skin and it is wonderful discovering an abandoned pile of rocks that someone else hauled a long way over rough ground before they discarded those rocks.

If you visit construction sites, I recommend that you wear a high visibility vest and hard hat, even if you're nowhere near heavy equipment or construction materials. Also, if it's your first time visiting somewhere, be sure that you've got permission to prospect the area, and report your finds to the "land owner" before you take anything home.

I just wanted to add to think it was #4 about bringing a flashlight. Back when arrowhead hunting in Texas going out to a lake in the early am around dusk or at sunset when the lake water is very calm and still (no waves) its great to arrowhead hunt up to a foot deep using a flashlight because the Chert the artifacts are made from reflect. So with the water so calm it’s easier to find.

Just think how useful maps are!
