I recently got back from NYC and every time I watch your video's I come back with memories. I love watching your video's. I Love NYC!
I grew up here in the 90s, moved to Florida in the 2000s. A few days ago, I came visit Brooklyn and places I grew up at after a long time, and I was shocked that 86th st/Bay Parkway was an influx of Asian things and people everywhere!
Remember walking with my old man down the street to get some Italian ice can’t believe it’s change so much. Little Italy no more.
It changed so fast
This was never little Italy . Little Italy's in the city . This is Bensonhurst.
BABYand US um. It was little Italy....I lived and grew up here it's now gone.
There’s still Italians but not as much.
It was predominately Italian and Jewish.
Bensonhurst used to be Jewish, then Jewish and Italian-American, then mostly Italian-American, and now it is mostly Chinese, with lots of Italians, Hispanics, Russians, Hasids, and Middle Eastern people. Everyone seems to get along just fine. The ones who lament how bad Bensonhurst has become are the ones who moved out, and nobody forced them to do so. I have lived here for 53 years and the neighborhood is still fine, with low crime, access to public transportation, good public schools, excellent shopping and all kinds of restaurants. There are more pizzerias than ever, including Da Vinci's and J&V on 18th Avenue, which were there 50 years and more ago. We have Italian, Chinese, Mexican Sushi, Thai, Russian, South American and Middle Eastern restaurants. I also have seen yuppies in the area, especially in some of the better dining places.
I grew up there, sorry but it's less diverse now. Mostly chinese and illegals is not diverse. and i was forced to move because of taxes. No BS here in Vegas
And soon no water in Las Vegas either. BTW, property taxes are high here and many other areas due to city corruption. But the area is very diverse and not just Chinese and "illegals." I have Hasids and Italians for neighbors, and there are lots of Russians in nearby apartment buildings.

We just had two straight days of rain. the Earth has cycles, and we have the colorodo river we get water from. Ty come again. Im glad you have diverse neighbors in the ghetto.

I grew up 2 blocks to the left of 33:52. In the 1990s that Emblem Health on the corner used to be Angelo's Bakery. We'd get the best cheesecake there. And the Dollar Tree at 37:00 used to be a Genovese Pharmacy

Back in the 50's and 60's the train line was the BMT, no F, C, B, or A trains back then, I lived on 83rd st and 19 Ave, The Eden Roc apartment, who knows what it is today, played many sports on that street.

They trying to push the blacks to the Bronx by raising them prices up. Bensonhurst is full of Mexicans, Arabs, Chinese, Russians, Polish, and Indians on 18th - Stillwell.

actionkid105 Thanks for making these videos. That's actually a great point. I'd be one of those people checking back to see what's changed. I'd actually like to make some for my own neighborhood but I'm not sure if a regular smartphone camera would capture the "life" of the streets like your equipment has.
I'm not trying to be negative at all but 86th Street doesn't look the same. I was expecting to see all the stores I known and loved growing up. This is nothing at all what it supposed to look like. Of this is the only 86th Street you know then yeah it will go down in history for you. For me this is so sad. My 86th Street is gone. The only things that are still original is Lenny's and Sabastians hair salon and maybe one other but that's it. It looks nothing like it used to. I wish you would have walked the real 86th Street before it was gone. 😱😰😖☹️
@@ActionKid Yes! Exactly, they hold their age really really well. The only thing I guess is the frame rate for more immersion, but besides that ageless for sure.

The neighborhood is still great. Every place undergoes changes. The Chinese merchants are great to do business with. There is everything you want between 18th Av and 25th Av.

I grew up pn Bay 20th St, between Cropsey Ave & Shore Pkwy during 1940s-50s. The demographics at that time were primarily Jewish & Italian. Today it seems overwhelmingly Asian. Bay 20th St intersects 86th St. at the Marshall's store, whose main entrance was once the premiere movie theater in the neighborhood, The Lowes Oriental (a "palace"). All subway trips for me began at the 18th Ave Station of the El that ran along 86th St: In those days it was called the BMT West End Line. Whether we were going to Manhattan, Coney Island or Ebbets Field to see the Dodgers, it began at 18th Ave BMT West End station.. Another movie theater on 86th St was the Benson, located near 86th St and 20th Ave. I attended Bensonhurst Junior HS located between 83rd & 84th St and 20th & 21st Ave. We were released at lunch time, so if we had a bag lunch we would go to Max's "candy store" on 86th St near 20th Ave, order an Egg Cream" and sit at a table and eat our lunch. If our parents gave us abit of money, we could also grab a knish at the Hebrew National on 86th St. We could also get a full lunch at a second floor walk-up Chinese restaurant on 86th St for 60 cents!! Pizza was always available street side. also recognized the old "Dime Savings Bank", corner of 19th Ave.

If you get a chance, you think you can create a narrated version of your tours of Bensonhurst. I know it takes a lot of time to do, so you do not have to do it if you do not want, but I thought it would be nice like the other videos you have narrated.

A very interesting video you made, at the corner of 86th and New Utrecht was a gas station owned by my father back in the late 50’s early 60’s. The funeral chapel Miraglia was once a Key Food supermarket. If you research the movie “the French connection” the chase scene where Gene Hackman was in high pursuit of the train. A young lady was walking across the street and forced Hackman to crash into the garbage on the corner of 86th and New Utrecht.
It’s very unfortunate this is not the Brooklyn I remember growing up as a child. My father hung out on the corner of 85th and 21st ave in front of a candy store at 8505 21st ave. It was owned by an old Jewish man Mr. Mosk. Now it’s Grotta Azzurra Pizzeria. And the GAP on 21st was a JAHN'S ICE CREAM !

Before all the Chinese People moved in there was a big influx of Russian People. The Chinese have brought a lot of new businesses in and the neighborhood is thriving.
I am reading all these comments about how it is like China in Bensonhurst I know I have no right speaking my mind about Bensonhurst since I didn’t grow up there only lived there for a few years but as long as the area is chill who cares who lives there

Why don't you do a walking tour of Bay Ridge, Brooklyn???????? You could show Bliss Park (Owls Head), Shore Road, the Gingerbread house, Verrazano bridge, John Paul Jones Park and the house from the TV show Blue Bloods.
Yep... I remember seeing The Godfather at the Loew's Oriental. It was such a great theater with a huge screen and a real two-tiered balcony. It's a shame to see that it became a Marshalls. At least Pizza Den is still on 18th Ave, but gone are John's Deli and Castellano's Pork Store (best hot Italian sausage in Bensonhurst).
Thanks Tony, it's been over thirty years since my last visit to Bensonhurst. I recall a bowling alley around the corner from the Oriental. Also the Benson theater on 20th ave (??) and the Deluxe on Cropsey ave (??). A nice SAFE place to walk any time of day or night in the 1970's. Used to date a chick on Bay 35th in 1970.
Yeah, there was the bowling alley on 18th Ave, between Benson & 86th St. If I recall correctly, it was "Three Star Lanes". After seeing a movie at the Oriental Theater, we'd walk up 86th to Jahn's for a cheeseburger. Don't remember if Jahn's was on the corner of 20th or 21st Ave. You're absolutely right; it was a safe place to walk any time. You'd never give it a second thought. Great times. (Also... the Deluxe was on Bath Ave. :-)
Oops! My bad. Forgot where the Deluxe was, alzheimer's??? Dyker Hgts. and Bay Ridge were mostly my stompin' grounds. There was a Jahn's (or was it Hinche's) on 5th between 85th and 86th streets (I think) or was it 69th and 5th ave?? We'd go there after a show at the RKO Dyker or the Alpine. I had a guy who had a guy that scored some great weed at Three Star Lanes in the old days. We would split a kilo (2.2lbs) between 5 or 6 guys. No dealing for me, just smokin'. Always liked to "lock in" a good supply for the holidays. Long time ago Tony, I'm getting near 70 now. Great times indeed.
Yes! It was Hinsch's on 5th Ave off 86th. Used to go there for a cheeseburger and an ice cream soda (or, an egg cream) after bowling at Leemark Lanes. Going even further back, I remember my mother dragging me into Woolworth on the corner of 5th & 86th. Used to simply call it the "five and dime" back then. As a kid, I used to think their lunch counter, with the grilled cheese and french fries, was the finest dining anywhere. I'm getting up there too - as you can probably tell.
