Walking NYC : Bensonhurst, Brooklyn via 86th Street (April 14, 2021)

  • เผยแพร่เมื่อ 15 เม.ย. 2021
  • I walk through the Brooklyn neighborhood of Bensonhurst via 86th Street from 18th Avenue to Bay Parkway. This area is full of Chinese businesses and restaurants with roots from the Guangdong and Hong Kong area. It was featured previously as the setting of the popular Saturday Night Fever movie. Many places popped up since I last visited, and it's astonishing to see this area growing so quickly.

    I live in this neighborhood since the early 90s. It has changed so much, it used to be all Italian restaurants and bakeries on 86th street.

      I think many Italians moved out to the suburbs. Even moving to Pennsylvania locations about 2 hours away.

    As one who was born and raised in Bensonhurst (lived on Bay 29th) I greatly appreciate this video. (actually, I appreciate all of your videos). I remember when they filmed Saturday Night Fever... all the girls in Jr. High cut classes the days they were filming on 86th street. LOL
    Right past the Mong Kok Market across the street from Marshalls (and Miraglia) is where the chase scene from "The French Connection" was filmed.
    The Steven Segal movie, "Out for Justice" was also filmed at the same intersection.
    That "Hot Bagel" place toward the end of your video has been there for over 50 years.

    This video was so sad to see. This was my neighborhood from 1967 to 1998.
    There were a few stores that are still there since that time. I hope Lenny's Pizza never leaves. Great freaking pizza.
    Rainbows, Effies are still there from back in the day. I took that train hundreds of times. Hearing the train, going over tracks brings back lots of memories.
    That neighborhood was so much fun. Cars driving up and down, full of hot, fun guys and chicks with the radio blaring freestyle dance or house music.
    To see it now, it is sad. So many great times and great people, that Italian neighborhood.

      @jolus6678 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thats just what neighborhoods do. For example, it wasn't always an Italian neighborhood so it changed big time when Italians took it over. And I assure you the people that lived there prior weren't happy about the change.

      It’s still good but the area looks generic with Starbucks, Duncan Donuts and other chain stores. It has lost some of its unique qualities but I still like it anyway. There is an Eastern European bakery there if I remember correctly and other good spots.

    I grew up not far from there in Marine park . I also lived in sheapshead bay. But I remember bensonhurst . My sister lived in Bayridge for a time back in the 1990s, and she told me that bensonhurst was rapidly changing from Italian to Chinese . It was always a nice neighborhood , Bensonhurst was , and it looks nice in your video . When you passed by that Pizza-restaurant place , that I believe you thought was new , I wanted to drop in and get a meatball sub. I miss those , as I live in Texas now. But there are no shortage of Chipotles restaurants here in Texas . The thing I miss most maybe from New York is the food. I miss my Italian bread. The only thing that comes close to Italian bread where I live now is baggets , which only the Vietnamese shops have . Thanks for the tour. I enjoyed it !

    When crossing the street underneath the El track, you should be more cautious of falling debris and parts of the railing tracks than bird droppings. People and cars have been hit by debris in the past, to such an extent that much of the track has netting suspended beneath it to catch whatever might fall to the ground.

    I thought you moved to Boston from the previous videos you posted, but yet you are still spending a lot of time recording in NYC like normal. Dyker Heights/Bay Ridge is certainly the very last large enclave of Italian Americans, however Avenue U in Gravesend also has decent concentration of Italian Americans and stores like Dyker Height's 13th Avenue. Of all the Little Chinatowns within Bensonhurst, 86th Street has the most amount of variety of businesses and more prosperous and though a mini Chinatown, it is also very culturally mixed in terms of population and businesses. Bath Avenue now has a growing Muslim population and businesses.

    I'm just curious.When the Chinese become the predominant population in a historically Italian neighborhood,is it still called,gentrification? Just asking-

    • @LannieLord
      @LannieLord 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have no idea how this happens BUT you can bet it's Chinese in China BUYING real estate Here . Bensonhurst is / was not the most expensive area because it's a HOUR away from NYC. Pain in the ass ride. Had Bensonhurst been 20 minutes from NYC- it would be all Hipsters and young 20's living there.

    • @BotanicalJourney
      @BotanicalJourney 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not really. Gentrification is when wealthy people start buying up a poor or working class neighborhood. This has happened in Italian neighborhoods like Carroll Gardens, where the Italians have been displaced by rich non-ethnic people. Here in Bensonhurst, where I have lived for many decades, it's been the normal neighborhood succession of one immigrant group in decline (Italian) and another one in assent (the Chinese). There is an ecumenic dimension to it, since demand has driven up the prices of homes. But overall, it's the same trend in every outer borough neighborhood. And Bensonhurst was "historically" quite mixed. The Italian immigration of the 1960s/70s/80s boosted its Italian-ness, but earlier in the century it was a mixed immigrant population leaving the Lower East Side.
