Being Irish myself, I can relate to what Carlo says about moving to a new country - even though my native Republic of Ireland and here in the U.K. are in a Common Travel Area (and both Covid and Brexit further complicated this 21 years later) when I first moved to Manchester (England) there was a whole bunch of stuff about the English system that I could not get used to and I found this very difficult indeed, where most of this is not obvious until you start living here in the U.K.

Is Carlo from Silicily area? His physical appearance resembles my great grandfather whose family were from there. Plus his personality seems to match his too.... Gregarious. Plus he immigrated here in Healdsburg CA in 1880 and bought a large ranch. Then married a neighbor French woman and they both learned English together. I inherited the ranch. Now with old growth redwood trees under protection.
I can relate to what Sarah says about the Covid restrictions, as I live in the U.K. (England) for 21 years and I was not able to return home to my family in the Republic of Ireland, even though I hold an Irish passport - a further complication was that even though travel by ferry was considered safer, from the Port of Holyhead in North Wales to Dublin, the Welsh government had its own restrictions, but the Irish government had far tougher restrictions compared to the U.K. which were also enforced much more strictly - from my last visit home in early December 2019, I did not manage to return to Ireland again until August 2022

Sarah, do you want to learn more italian or become fluent? I’m asking from a fellow grandchild of immigrants. (i think your grandparents immigrated?) my family is from germany. my mom wasn’t confident enough with her fluency to raise my siblings and myself bi-lingual. I understand german ok, speaking is more difficult especially because of the gendered nouns and conjugation, but i don’t struggle too much with pronunciation. my language skills definitely change depending on when i’m around german speaking family or in germany because of the immersion, i’m just curious bc i love my “mother tongue” so much and want to be fluent and would love to end up with someone who speaks german to help me stick to becoming fluent. although another language i would be fine too. i struggle so hard visiting family/family visiting us. i just feel like my language skills have plateaued and i’m not motivated enough to keep going. (for now) anyways no judgement if you don’t want to learn and i also know it can be frightening and overwhelming. just curious. :)) also loved the vid!

I lived this situation, and I think he is making huge efforts to speak English and it’s very very very tiring to speak an over language all day long and having someone in front of you saying “ your are not listening properly “. What a selfish situation. If you really love him, why don’t you learn Italian? It’s should be a give and receive conversations. Not just him every single day.

My dad passed away when i was 21 and i am thankful that i knew my dialect. I finally understood all the culture and respect for my mom and relatives sacrifice they went thru to give me and my cousins to be first generation in USA. Because of my mom i have the fundamentals of life love and lineage. Your children will have all the amazing traits Carlo has been instilled in his childhood.
