  • Here's how you remove an outboard bearing carrier without needing special tools. It's possible to rig up your own bearing carrier puller for cheap. This is an Evinrude V6 gear case, but the process is nearly identical for any outboard. REPLACEMENT LOWER UNIT SEAL KIT LINKS BELOW!! READ MORE:

    Sometimes you have to put some heat on the lower unit in addition to PB Blaster. Remember that acetylene is too hot! A decent propane torch is more than adequate. The lower unit is made out of aluminum. You don't want to melt your gear casing!
    Remember, once you put a lot of heat to your gearcase it WILL damage the rubber seals. So, if you start the job, you need to finish it.

    Good idea, my puller is way to small for my 125hp mercury lower unit and iv almost scrapped the lower unit due to the 100s of failed attempts.. almost took my head off on multiple occasions by using my big engine hoist and strapping the lowerunit down, putting chains on my puller and boom the puller slips out and catapults 100mph skimming my head lol... your idea is way better and safer than mine. I'll be trying this tomorrow! I might just get my lower unit apart now. Thanks.

    great idea Matt, I thought of this too but tried ratcheting straps instead, didn't work, not enough torque I guess. I got some chain so going to try this method, great video!

    I'm so mad at myself for not thinking of this ... I have all the tools for doing this on standard gearcase and have been doing this trade for many years. I don't know if there is a puller for a TRP (I have never seen one ) but sometimes it takes a second set of eyes for widening the blinders. Thank you for the idea!

    I have two motors and used this idea on both. The first one was tough but after some heat, it broke free. The second one was a counter rotation lower and this method destroyed the whole carrier. I ended up buying a whole new lower for that motor. I did finally get that broken carrier out after cutting a hole in the side of the case. At least I have lot's of good spare parts now as all the gears, bearings and shafts were in nice shape.

      The bearing carriers can be a HUGE pain to get out. You can read stories on forums where guys say to heat the lower unit with an Acetylene torch until the Aluminum almost melts lol.

    Watched your video tried all the solutions and nothing worked kept digging and found an old mechanic who said put two pieces of 3/8 flat stock between the prop and the housing tighten the prop nut it will pull right out. Worked like a charm... you might need to use some thicker stock and washers under prop nut to completely remove it.

      @@normancopeland8506 I think I understand what you're saying, but if you could be as specific as possible I would really appreciate it... I'm about to tackle this project and your leverage method sounds like the best one, but I dont want to scratch the shaft or crack the housing... any more info appreciated.

    • @normancopeland8506
      @normancopeland8506 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@chrisnelson1714 Scratching the shaft will not be a problem just slide your flat metal pieces between the prop and the housing put a couple of washers under the prop nut on the shaft and tighten the prop nut the shaft and bearing housing will start to come out you might need to add a some thicker flat stock or add washers as you pull. You can pad the flat stock with a red rag or something like that to cushion the housing ...and make sure the flat stock will not hit the carrier bearing as it come out ..you are basically using the prop as a puller..go slow if you feel like it is binding stop check the positioning of your flat stock. it actually should come out fairly easily.Happy Boating

      Normally they heat the lowerunits with an Acetylene torch while it is loaded up with the puller on it. You have to put enough heat to it for the metal to expand. It's like a giant heat sync.
