See reality as it is first, before you try to bend it - The Stockdale Paradox

  • Jim Stockdale was the highest ranking captive POW in the Hanoi Hilton. He spent 8 years as a prisoner of war and lived to tell about it. His lesson, the Stockdale Paradox, is an important one for all founders. You must know you will prevail while also accepting total reality. Jim Collins talks about it in Good to Great, and it comes up all the time in startup land.
    I talk about how both parts of the paradox were a part of my own startup journey. In fact, violation of the 2nd part (being able to see reality as it is) led to my own personal failure. Today I spend a lot of time trying to help founders navigate their own minefields in this world.
    Sorry for the hiatus! I've been busy closing our newest $230M seed-stage venture capital fund, and so now I'm back to making videos again.

    Garry, I know this YT channel is not practically worth your time (given your work as a VC) & won't lead to any major incremental value for you as of now (in long run this will hit big). But please dont stop. It has been a great resource for me (as I am trying to make a major life transition), and over-time people will find its value. Until then, please keep sharing your knowledge. It has been a very big value add to our lives.

    This hit in all the right spots haha... I am living this day in day out and it gets really tough especially knowing (as the CEO) it is your job to make sure you get the best shot at this thing you are building/trying. Thanks for this great video and all the quality content Garry! I had never come across the Stockdale Paradox and find this idea of bending reality relevant not only to the Tech world but also if you're trying to find a new job or change jobs as it's a binary situation and it's sometimes hard to see the progress that you're making. If you're being rejected, it can be quite disheartening but you have to stay motivated, focus on the long game, keep putting in the work and hopefully it pays off!

    - Length is great

    Alex Karp was asked what he thought the single best thing was that he has done while being CEO of Palantir.
    His response: Being directly involved in the hiring of the first 350 employees. This helped shape the culture of the company.
    I know Garry was an early employee at Palantir and has been highly successful since leaving. If Garry was one of the first 350 - This is the type of stuff the employees are being given. This is quality content. This is the mindset within Palantir - All could potentially be as independently successful as Mr. Garry.
    Very curious if he was first 350.

    I feel personally attacked by this video.
    Jajajajaja like damn, this is sooooooooooooo relevant right now. With everything going on with the pandemic, this is a question I've been thinking about so much for my company. Do we switch course because reality is not as it was before? Or do we stick to our belief that the future will be as we think it should be? I mean obviously I hadn't organized my thoughts quite as coherently as you did but this has been in my mind like every day.
    I guess that's why YC tells everyone to hit that 7% growth every week. Because it forces you to look at the truth. If you tried everything you could this week and you didn't hit that metric, then something went wrong. You have to find what it is that went wrong, and try to fix it for the next week and see if it changes anything. And only through that process you will ensure that you're always keeping yourself grounded in reality, without deluding yourself with your own wishful thinking.
    I used to think this didn't apply for enterprise software because it's hard to hit that 7% weekly growth in revenue when your sales cycle is slower. But even if you can't grow your revenue 7% week over week, you have to have a metric that you're trying to grow. Number of calls booked, number of demos done, number of people in the later stages of the funnel.
    Tracking those things is the only thing that has kept us focussed and determined during these very funky times.
    Thank you for posting this Gary. This is really good stuff.

    Love the hair cut and congrats on the fund! Does the new fund do pre-seed? Post launch, users, traction/thousands of users, full time founders pre rev? This is a way cool educational video. It scares me to death as I’ve seen many ppl lie to themselves about the state of their business and/or skills and have seen personal friends kill their business because they were in complete denial of their short comings. It scares me as I hope as a founder I don’t fail to have honest discussions with myself and my team.

    Hi Garry interesting video, got me thinking 🤔 You mention founders have to know they will win in the end, and accept their current reality. However sometimes I feel like it will be a successful journey and many people will benefit from and other times I feel like it’s a stupid idea that no one will benefit from. What do you suggest I do? Should I keep putting my all into it or stop and move on?

    • @GarryTan
      @GarryTan  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well I mainly know about software so if it’s a physical invention I’m not sure if you should take my advice. That said I would pursue it if I felt I could profitably make it and sell it and have it grow. Which means can you sell it for a lot more than you make it, and is there enough gross margin to pay for marketing/sales/BD to get more customers? Can it be a money machine?

    • @investwiselyfolks7656
      @investwiselyfolks7656 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess I figure it would make a successful invention. Maybe its the fear of the unknown that really gets to me.
