      What would you do if you can be better, faster, and cheaper but only compared to different industries or services, not the same one?
      Ie: instacart is faster than shopping yourself but not cheaper since there is a added delivery fee. But they are cheaper than other delivery companies since they don’t have inventory/assets.
      Is that something of value or should you focus your branding and positioning to focus on one industry and Value prop (being better, faster, or cheaper)?

    It's not about being the first, but the importance of execution and timing is huge. For our business, we weren't the first to ever do what we do, but we did it better, faster, and cheaper, than competitors. Another great video, Garry!

    Hi Garry, found this channel a couple of weeks ago and I think you are absolutely nailing it. As you grow way beyond a 100k subscribers within a few months, please keep sticking to your humble, open, and concise format. This is what really makes it worth listening too. I think being first is a marketing bias, because of all the data that says using "first" in your marketing grows your audience faster. When Instagram sold to Facebook there were already 25,000 apps in just Apple's app store doing the same thing, and when talking to a handful of co-founders found that the internals were so the same! So there is also freaknomics at work, where 10 people are all doing the right thing to make an exit, but chance only picks one. Thanks for the video, Garry. I haven't worked in tech in 2 years, but you're making me rethink swimming in the shark tank again. All the startups I worked for spectacularly failed, but you make me believe it can be different.

      Better could have been more precise, but it's a vague term to begin with

  • @ahmedmujtaba9079
    @ahmedmujtaba9079 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    exactly, a lot of people when they're thinking about startup ideas they think new or never been done before. but it's always better to take an old idea or market that's has not changed much in years and built something completely new or better e.g. Tesla with electric cars. sometimes when I tell someone an idea, sometimes their first response is oh someone is already doing it and I always say that's a good thing, it means there's a market for it. if it's very original idea, most of the times it just means there's no market for it or the market is very small. I used to teach entrepreneurship and I always explain value or the mechanism of delivering value in these exact terms better, faster, cheaper and I always add delightful. love ur videos. cheers.

    This was really good, I have an idea that I chased in 2018 but put it on the back burner. I’ve heard you on this week in startups with @Jason and your communication style is very easy and down to earth. I would say the biggest challenge for most people I talk to is not earning for 1,2,3 years. I don’t think we educate about risk enough, from investing to education or even who you date/marry. People are spending 150k on education or 30-50k on a certification but won’t spend 25-50k (expenses) to work on a startup venture. This is the first video I watched, will binge the rest 😎. Good stuff! Please tweet out any podcasts you do, would love to hear em.

    Hey Garry! Seriously, thank you for all that you do - it was so hard to find practical startup content before your channel came to be.
    I watched your video re. your $200 million mistake, and boy was it a huge wake up call. I'm literally in the same exact position you were in when you were 23, minus the Peter Thiel writing me a check part. For regular folks like me who want to pursue their own startups, I feel like many of us don't know how to make our first foray into the industry (amount of money to save up before starting?, finding cofounders?, sourcing funds?). So, do you think a video like "The first 5 steps to starting a startup" would be helpful for your audience? I personally would love to hear your advice. Cheers!

      I think the #1 thing there is making something that stands on its own. A great product or service. Both insiders and outsiders can tell if something that you made is good. Resume-thinking is lazy - being able to look at the quality of the product and service is universal.

    Thanks Garry, been reading into YC’s concept of Unique Insight and low how you help to break it down further with better, faster and cheaper with clear examples. My startup CouchSurfer is working on a home to connect all your streaming providers and we know we working on better by bringing in friend’s recommendations rather than algorithms since most people ignore them, faster because you can now find/browse across all your content rather than aimlessly scrolling between Netflix/Disney+ etc but don’t have a clear answer on cheaper. We have considered recommending to users when to cancel subscriptions/trials, buying content licenses for popular shows and selling cheaply and even bundling subscriptions together, but would love your take on it :)

    10 minutes video is very long but having meaningful, understandable and great video like this makes it like 1 minute video.

    The big advantage of being first is the yardstick to measure you don't exist yet, so you will likely make some kind of impact if the problem is real and you can solve it (even in a mediocre way). If you have even one direct competitor, then obviously you must deliver something above whatever it is they have. Interesting video, though!

    Garry, Thanks for dropping these gold nuggets! One question - is the funding for these types of startups primarily focused on tech startups (and NOT product-based)? Thanks

      @@GarryTan I would like to know more about cheaper though!
      Is it a good marketing strategy to have cheaper software? You know sometimes people thinks it's better cause it's expensive.
      I recently built a matrimonial application for my native language community. I want to provide a cheaper solution but when I talk to users they don't really care about money they care about service more. I guess I'm trying to ask what's your your thought process behind target price for a product like dating app.
