  • Al-Shabaab, short for Ḥarakat ash-Shabāb al-Mujāhidīn meaning 'the Mujahideen Youth Movement' is an Islamist movement from Somalia, active in East Africa and across the Gulf of Aden in Yemen. The group has its origin in the Somali Civil War of the 1990s, though it was officially founded in 2006 during the Ethiopian Invasion of Somalia. They continued to fight against the Ethiopians and AMISOM generally throughout the 2000s, capturing territory in the South of Somalia as well as crossing the border into neighbouring Kenya to expand their operations.

1:14 Something you need to know about this moment, as someone who isn't even from southern Somalia but from Borama in northernmost Somalia, ICU was a godsend when they rose to power in the south. They actually brought a brief moment of stability and began disarming nearly every tribal militia and subjugating all the crazy warlords. The sun actually rose over a new day in Mogadishu HOWEVER this didn't sit too well with certain rival tribes in Somalia who suffered at the hands of the ICU (as the ICU was majority Hawiye) some of these tribes unified and built the transitional government of Somalia and sought help from neighbouring Ethiopia to regain control of Mogadishu. Ethiopia during that time was ruled by the TPLF party (yes, the same TPLF that fell from power and is currently fighting for their lives in Ethiopia now) they saw the ICU as a threat so they essentially told the USA that the ICU was al-Qaeda affiliated and an Islamic terrorist organisation (keep in mind this was the height of Iraq and afghan insurgency and the war on terror). The USA immediately backed an Ethiopian invasion into Somalia in 2006 which caused major atrocities across the south, they backed the transitional government (which was filled with warlords and tribalists) and ousted the ICU. The USA later realised the mistake they made and brought back the former leader of the ICU Sheikh Sharif, al-Shabaab was born out of the power vacuum left behind by the ICU in the south. The transitional government could barely exert any control across the south and the majority of its members (warlords) began carving the south up into their own territories.
Somali civil war could have ended in 2006 if it weren't for foreign interference. Even now foreign forces r completely against the re-establishment of a national army and guess what? those same warlords n terrorists are also against it. The war in Somalia has become profitable for the African Union troops AMISOM which have been accused of prolonging the conflict to secure more funding and payments from the EU (the whole mission in Somalia is funded by the EU)
Sorry for the huge-ass text but there is major history behind al-Shabaab

Alot of crucial information is left out. The ICU as it names suggest were a union of courts thats purpose was manily for settling dispute and bringing order in the midst of anarchy during the civil war, the warlords battling each other were horrific. The locals supported the ICU and eventually took the capital, not Al-Shabaab, Al-Shabaab was just a small disliked faction that the ICU kept in check. The Ethiopians took the opportunity to paint the ICU as a terrorist organisation, after that the American government froze money in the banks and backed the warlords that stole aid during a famine! (Ironically the same people Bush Sr fought) the CIA went on to kill principals and Imams, mind you this was the first time in 15-20 some years Somalia has been in peace the ICU were opening up schools again and cleaning the streets, then the American backed Ethiopian invasion, the ICU peacefully withdrew from Mogadishu in order to avoid destruction and mass civilian casualties and eventually dismantled while the Al-Shabaab showed up and thats how Al-Shabaab began.

@@overdose8329 Sufis are not pacifist broski. Historically speaking, sufis like imam shamil, the darawiish and the sanusiyya in libya were at the forefront of resistance against colonialists. Western media try to paint Sufism as a pacifist thing but the reality is that there is an orthodox Sufism that many of our ulama practiced. Assuming you’re salafi, you’ll find that scholars like ibn taymiyya praised abdulqadir al jaylani, for example, and is buried in a Sufi graveyard- where only Sufis are allowed to be buried. On the other hand, you have other people who claim to be Sufis and come up with their own bs and misguide the people with their ignorance and greed in some cases. Also, just as fiqh and aqeedah are a part of Islam- so is tasawwuf- it’s goal is to attain ihsan. And if you look at the hadith of jibril where iman, islam and ihsan are mentioned, you’ll see what I’m talking about.

Losing Kismayo would be a blow to them. They make 70-80million a year from Sugar and Charcoal exports from the port. If the Kenyan + AU occupation forces leave AS would die. However, they won't leave without being forced out and as you can see from yesterday's UNSC resolution clearly its what certain "powers" want.

Although Ethiopia was there to stop terrors, they used it as an axcuse to invade somalis who they saw as enemy to the cuntry's stability in the previous decades. They even stopped at Gode, the former capital of somali region of ethiopia to cause some trouble, because they've been the roots of somali regions indipendance movements in ethiopia.
Kenya's motivation for invasions started because the Jubbaland province of somalia used to be a part of British East Africa (old name for kenya) until the brits switched it to their somaliland. Native somalis in north eastern province of kenya started movements to join somalia when kenya achived independance. After silencing them, kenya switched the topic from north east to Jubbaland and whether it should be kenya or somalia.

i know its an old ass vid but...GOTTA SAY IT
I am so tired of hearing people say that the name "Saxon" comes from The seax style knife. I hear this so much its starting to irritate the shit out of me. This theory is false,it is not true,it is made up, I dont know how else to get this through to people. It comes from sacae-son ,or the sons of the sacae. Saxon is a language cognate. Sacae, sacca, sakka, sachsaman ect, are the Aryan tribe from the eastern step that migrated south to the indus valley several different times. One of these was with Alexander the Great. After his battles with them, extremely impressed by these warriors he incorperated large numbers of the "scythian tribe of the sacae" into his calvery force. After things settled down in the region these warriors hooked up with king Friso and sailed back to frisland. Eventually settling just north of the frisians.
Have a look at the germanic spelling for saxon and the name given to them by the surrounding peoples.
Being a person with strong saxon heritage, this information is not only known to scholars( who since ww2 try to say its nonsense) but is known in my family for generations. Yes crazy I know! that people actually know where their ancestors come from. and dont need dick headed "scholars" to tell them they are wrong or making shit up.
