  • Step By Step Guide on how to replace the Starter motor and solenoid on a Chrysler PT Cruiser with a 2.4L DOHC Non Turbo Motor. If you go by the repair manual you'll have to do alot more work but if you follow mydetailed instructions in this video you will be able to squeeze the starter out of the engine without removing too many brackets and other components like the manual says.

    Thank you, Sir
I have been freezing in the Montana winter, living out of my car with my dog, for lack of a starter. This video is literally helping me to improve the quality of our lives because someone helped me out today by taking one off of their parted out PT's.
Blessings to you and your family.
    Subscribing right now.

I just did this job following the instructions.
I used [2] 8" 3/8" drive extensions AND a swivel extension then a 15mm socket. I went up from UNDERNEATH the car. If you snake this arrangement through the lower radiator hose, it will get you fairly close to a straight shot at the hidden bolt on the bottom of the starter. SOMETHING ELSE: When installing the new starter, put the top bolt into the starter BEFORE attempting to do the bottom bolt. I just tightened the top bolt enough to get the starter "CLOSE" to being tight, then went to putting all the wires on, then the bottom bolt, and tightened it up. Then back to tighten the top bolt. Took about an hour to do the install.
    Hope this helps someone else.

I have been a body man for 20 years, and I hate turning wrench. I came across your video and love how real without edit. Most importantly I live how the lady in the background is giving you a hard time! "Are you the only person with friends"? Any person who hasn't been in same situation and lost his s**t hasn't work on enough cars. Great video I am now a subscriber.

I just did that today [04/02/2016 at 3pm] and all went PERFECT. I modified a bit your instructions & didn't have to lift the car. This is my 1st time & it took me 41 mins to take the old one out and the new one in.
    1. Once I reach to 2:49 of this video, I continue taking out the grille (4 screws/ 7mm).
    2. Disassemble the bar that holds the radiator (only the 4 screws/ 10mm, not the cable), the one that has 2 rubbers. Sit it on the bumper.
    3. Unscrew ONLY the upper screw (10mm) of the vertical bar in front of the radiator (middle) & move it to the right.
    4. Now take the radiator hose from the radiator only (hold it with the intake manifold)
    5. Now you have complete access from the top by making room moving the radiator towards you and you can see where the connector & all the screws are.
5 more easy steps only, taking a few screws (9 total) out and no hassle or pain in the *ss. It doesn't hurt to try it, good luck!...

Thanks bro. I got under mine at 8pm was done at 2 am. LOL! reason.. the upper bolt was easy. the lower bolt was a bitch n a half only because the space .it literally took me 20 mins to get the bolt out because it's so long and the i was getting 1-2 clicks per turn in the wrench . but once done. I was back up and running ..saved myself around 250+ in labor. Thanks for your input on this.ohi did lift the car alittle .just one side though.

Nice!, good to heard that some of my ideas help someone save $$. Who doesn't want that, right?...lol... Funny is that I'm changing today the knock sensor in a few mins. and later maybe next weekend the Spark plugs with it wire set & the Vapor Canister Purge Valve / Solenoid (when I get it on the mail)...is like a tune up and a try to turn off the engine light.

My PT just stopped starting. It worked, I drove to the store and after that the starter relay in the fuse box would click, but nothing from the starter. I managed to push the car and kickstart it fine. Before that I thought the battery was dead, we tried jumping it and nothing. The battery terminal was somewhat loose and a light type voltmeter said it was low, but electric windows operated strong and headlights were bright.
Car is home and I'm going to check a few more things, but after watching your video, I'm confident I can do it if it does come down to the starter.
Side note: all that yellow dust on the battery terminals made my hands itch and burn just looking at it. Glad you are parting it out, looks like it had no battery maintenance. 😆

Another route: I pulled the front grill off to slip the coolant fan out (need to pull forward on radiator a little. Needed to use a clean worn out sock to protect the radiator hose from dust, debris, etc…. My 15mm box wrench broke the grip on the lower starter bolt. Wish I could share 3 pics. Replaced the original starter today on an ‘01.

I was hoping it was this easy on the turbo/gt cruiser but the hard lower intercooler pipe is in the way. Definitely will want to remove the upper and lower intake manifold pieces. Remove throttle cables, vacuum lines, rear mount bolts. Fuel rail can remain in place. Upper manifold bolts are 8mm, lower are 10mm bolts. Still a PITA! 😉 👌

Just had issues with the starter today. It definitely wasn't the battery as it tested at 80%. Not the fuel injection as the solenoid could be heard clicking. Waiting for the tow truck I had an idea. Stuck my hand down the front without removing anything. Felt for the cables to the starter, sure enough a cable had come loose so I popped it back on. My baby started!!!
Might want to try this before replacing one or having it replaced.

Much easier to remove and replace if the dip stick tube is removed with a simple tug upward since the bolt that holds it in place has already been removed.

You only remove a few parts held on by simple bolts or clamps. Not that hard or complicated. If you have a screw driver, a socket wrench set, and a swivel adapter for that socket wrench, you are set. Not a mechanic myself but it was no trouble. Pleasant work on a sunny spring day with a cold beer to keep you company. Definitely take it to a mechanic in winter if you don't have a heated garage. Worth every penny then!
