In this video we tear down a 5.3L LH6 all aluminum V8 from a 2005 GMC Envoy Denali. This engine comes with 799 heads, flat top full floater pistons, gen4 rods while retaining the Gen3 24x trigger wheel on the crankshaft. Unfortunately, this engine failure mode lead to a lot of carnage and not a lot of great parts. CHECK YOUR OIL!

I feel like the “piston delete kit” should be up there on the mechanics joke list with the muffler bearings and blinker fluid.
The steel plate in the timing cover is likely there for noise reduction. The cover may vibrate at some harmonic frequency and the plate is there to change that frequency. The aluminum oil pans with small stamped steel lower oil pans on many new vehicles have the stamped steel lower pan there for the same reason.

Suggestion: pull the oil pan without turning the engine upside down. I think that would reduce the amount of fishing through the engine for piston mcknuggets.

Yes indeed. What a stain on the reputation of Cadillac those things were. I think the version that Olds used in the Aurora, it was smaller like a 4.0 liter or 4.4 liter, can't remember, but even that was a lot better version than the one Caddy used.
The Parts aren't worth anything
Having had an Aurora, which sleeved the Northstar to get its 4.0-liter size (all external dimensions and points are identical, and the Aurora "hot-rod swap is to find a 4.6 and drop it in,) I read somewhere that the case material was so porous they would lose oil and grease the outside of the block just sitting there; oil would seep through the metal. A common failure, early on, at least, was head bolts pulling out of the block, taking some threads with them.

Can second the always checking the oil, especially in this LH6 engine. Have one in my 06 Envoy Denali, and these engines specifically are bad for low oil because of the stupid oil pan design. If its low, under acceleration all the oil rushes to the back of the pan and starves the engine because the pickup tube is at the front of the engine...Change the oil every 5K miles or 6 months on this engine! Been doing this for the last 7 years and its kept me trouble free!
I had one same year until it got crushed by a pine tree from the hurricane last year. I had over 200k miles on it. I had a guy in the trailblazer ssforum make me a cheap baffle for the oil pan in which I riveted on one side. It only cost $20. Worked out great and I didn’t have to watch my oil anymore lol

Piston mcnuggets... I love it. You might be able to save the block with some JB weld and a few pieces of the former piston. If a blown engine from a car is carnage, would a blown engine from a truck be trucknage? Oil is over rated....

The VLOM is Valve Lifter Oil Manifold. It’s part of what controls DoD
Valve or variable? I have heard it called Variable Lifter Oil Management as well for the horrible idea of DOD/AFM. This is what happens when engineers try to appease bunny huggers.
Nice teardown. I would score this as a solid 9 for carnage and a 10 for collateral damage due to migration of metal chunks from piston into intake and then into all the other cylinders. 5 bonus points are added for hole in block.
So is the hole in the block what they call Positive Crankcase Ventilation?

Ever since the LS engines introduction, I've never seen a single one that didn't show a little bit of copper on the cam bearings. I've rebuilt and modified quite a few of these engines, and the wear in the bearing areas are almost identical. The cam plate was a year specific item. The early styles did have 10mm bolts, and late 03 started using countersunk screws. You can use either one when going back together, because they'll interchange. The engine you're working on is a rare bird because it was only made for two years. It's too bad it's blown up though.

Stamped steel plate on the timing cover is for clearance for gen3 water pump. Gen4 water pump has more clearance for vvt. Also these trailblazer 5.3s have dipstick going to the oil pan instead of the engine block but you can drill it to accept a regular truck dipstick.

I've been in a car that has happened to. First it sounds like it's being fuelled by spanners/wrenches. Then, it sounds like the pistons are going to come through the hood before a massive explosion 😁

Some engines have temporary cylinder deactivation...the new fancy ones have permanent deactivation. It's way better.

I religiously watch all the engine teardown vids, however this one did not show up in my subscriber feed, for some reason. Re: the hole in the pan for the diffs/axles...Some 2wds also have it. We have an 08 TB with the 5.3, 2wd and it has the hole for the axle shafts as well.
Yes, doesn’t matter if it’s 2wd or 4wd, they all got the same pan

I had a regular wheelbase 08 Trailblazer with a 5.3, it would burn oil like crazy. I had the DOD deleted but the damage was done. Great SUV but the planned obsolescence was more than I could bear

And AFM was an awful addition, second only to the other GM deplorably awful advent, V-8-6-4....

You seem to suggest this particular LS blows up, but letting ANY engine run out of oil will produce a similar result. Nothing to do with LS.
You should check out the videos on the Ford Coyote engines. Especially with the flat-plane crank. Make one wonder why Ford is $278 billion in debt. Got to love those class action law-suits
I am pretty sure that any engine, that is ran without oil, is going to fail.
Iron blocks are stronger, Gen 4 rods tend to be stronger than Gen 3. I have a 4.8 with 154000

I have a 2005 Chevy trailblazer with a 5.3 liter V8. It has a bad rod knock on the number 6 rod. Haven't even started it for 2 years because if I am going to replace the engine I want to have a decent core. The engine ran fine before I went to Walmart. It wasn't until after they changed my oil that I learned they sucked the oil out through the dipstick tube using a small hose. That leaves all sorts of garbage in the bottom of the oil pan which gets clogged up in the oil filter which leads to exactly what you are seeing in that engine there. It usually starts with low or no oil pressure at idle and you can see that through all the bearings. Doesn't matter what you see on your dipstick, it's gonna show you have enough oil but the pump isn't going to move it.
That's why my 5.7 litre Chevrolet LS1 V8 engine has done almost 368,000.kilometres (228,665; Miles),I change the oil !

Same engine as in my trailblazer. Thankfully my dude Lucas Hartsel rebuilt it with DOD delete. Small cam an headers with tune drives great.

I had a really nice 07 Envoy Denali with the 5.3. It would literally go through a quart of oil every 500 miles. You had to keep a close eye on it or it would drain itself dry between oil changes. The DOD finally went out during a 10 hour trip to Wisconsin and it started tapping. I was so mad at the thing I literally drove it to the nearest junkyard in Kenosha and sold it for $300 on the spot. 🤣

Piston McNuggets... LOL. I'm not sure you mentioned this in previous videos, but there is a smell you get when cracking rod and main bearing bolts. Perhaps you could give us a heads up when you crack the bolts and the aroma is released. Sort of like smell-O -vision.

Trailblazer wasn't the only ls with a awd sump and diff mount the Holden adventura and hsv coupe 4 (awd gto) in Australia did to. it had a ls1 with an awd set-up
Also Australian delivered ls2s from 04 to 06 have that timing cover with the tin to for what reason I do not knoe

It's so easy and cool. All you have to do is just remove the drain plug from your oil pan, and throw it away. Then drive as normal!

As usual, great video. Looks like that poor thing was in really rough shape prior to the catastrophic piston removal and block vent port. It was really used up.

That cut out area could have been originally for an easy remove mini cover to check timing system without having to remove full cover, then company decided not to make the easy plate and sealed up the cut out hole fully...possibly so a timing chain check would require removing the entire cover and more time for mechanics.
They probably abandoned it once they realized they couldn't get it to seal right and it leaked more oil than an AMF-era Harley.
