Wow! This was right on time. I have 2 more years of undergrad and then I will be applying to dental school. I get discouraged every other semester because I don’t feel that I am as “smart” as I need to be in order to be a Dentist. Then God reveals to me that if I am obedient in what he is asking me to do, he will take care of the rest! Ty for not giving up and allowing God to use you. We need to see more of this! I love this and want to share my experience as well in hopes it can help as well. I actually finished dental school and was applying for my postgrad education for orthodontics...and I unfortunately didn’t have the most competitive GPA, but I did shadow orthodontists and commit a lot of my time in that field! Personal statement is VERY important and is what can help the university give you a chance especially if you ask a bunch of different orthodontists and educators to review it and give you their thoughts. So basically make sure your CV/resume has a lot of focus on the speciality of your choice and a VERY good personal statement. Make sure you don’t give too much personal details because they aren’t looking for your life story, so make your intro very brief and straight to the point so you can talk more about why you are a good candidate and how the uni is going to benefit from having you (also try not being overly confident because it’s all about balance). I did get accepted to the program I applied for and I should be starting this fall as per the region I live in. Good luck to everyone who is working on their applications :D

I will take my DAT in two weeks, I feel so stress and worry about it everyday. I am currently use DAT Bootcamp, I did bad on most the practice tests. I got discourage!!! But anyway I will keep trying!
From everything that I've heard throughout the applications process, either your GPA or DAT score needs to be solid. The recruiters have to base decisions off of some sort of metric. However, there are exceptions, so don't give up if you are lacking in an area. I had an 18 on the DAT with a 3.7 GPA, and decided to use that DAT score for 2 application cycles, and it worked. I would not retake the DAT unless both your GPA and DAT score are bad, or if you scored under an 18 on the DAT. A lot of my undergrad classmates did not do a lot of volunteering, shadowing, or research. I would highly recommend doing some sort of undergrad research through your biology or chemistry department. I was able to get a great letter of recommendation from the faculty that I did research with and I was asked about my research at the interview, which was easy to talk about. Also, between my 1st and 2nd application cycle, I shadowed an oral surgeon and he also wrote me an awesome letter of recommendation. After I did not get into a school the first cycle, then I did undergrad research, I kept tutoring boys, and shadowed the oral surgeon. This made me look like I was actively trying to make my application better, and I became a better applicant after this extra year. A lot, and I mean a lot of people get in on their 2nd and 3rd tries. I'd give it at least 3 tries, I know it is expensive, but it's worth it.
wow I am recently watching your video and I'm so glad I came across it! It's so crazy how much we have in common starting with our faith! I've been wanting to start my own TH-cam channel with these 3 categories but didn't know how to blend them all in. I thank you for making this video and encouraging others to pursue their dreams, even though you had a few hardships.... God bless

I am a practicing dentist for 3yrs. I applied 4times and accepted. Thru those 4 years I prepared well myself to survive in d school. The curriculum in d school is not easy. Very tough and stressful so if you are not prepared you will not gonna survive. Just use your time to prepare yourself because at the end no one cares if you are falling behind and may not like dentistry. $$$ is not all in dentistry b/c I saw many people dont like this job either.

When you say volunteering, is that just unpaid volunteering in any capacity at say a local church like in the nursery ? or does it have to pertain in some way to getting into Dental School?

Good luck!! I STRUGGLED with general chemistry 1 and 2 soo bad. I had no idea what was going on. Organic Chem was a lot better for me, but your courses don't determine everything! Despite having no idea what was going on in gen chem and i was TERRIFIED of the DAT, I ended up getting a 24 on the Gen Chem section but an 18 on the Ochem section haha. So you're struggling now, but if you really want it, you will get it if you put in the work!! :) Good luck!!
@jenai Thank you so much for the comment. Right now I’m in Gen chem 2 and it is tough. It is so good to know that although you struggled in chem, that you did well on the DAT! That gives me hope. Hard work & perseverance is what I’ve running on :)
Besides your bachelors degree and a great gpa... what other things would you suggest doing for dental school? I’ve heard a lot about people volunteering and doing research papers, as well as shadowing...
HELLO! I want to apply to A&M for the 2025 cycle. However, I only did Human Anatomy and not physiology. Do you know by any chance if they accept Anatomy and Physiology the class together and do I have to take A&P 1 and 2? Or it has to be separate?
Is being in the honors college really worth it for dental school or can you still get into dental school without honors? I’m also in Texas and I would love to go to A&M college of dentistry or move back to Michigan with my family and go to dental school there!!!
this video was very helpful! i currently am deciding on if i want to be dentist and this was amazing info! i hear that majoring in biology is best for being a dentist... i wanted to know if this is true or if i can major in anything i want and still get in ?
I know that's rough. But if that B is a high B, I'd try to start a relationship with that professor so that they could write you one. But going forward,, you wanna try to get to know your science profs very well BEFORE the class ends so that even if you don't make a perfect score, they know you personally and are more willing to write good things about you
Hey, I was wondering if you would whether or not dental schools like seeing medical experience on applications: I am currently a Certified Nursing Assistant at a Hospital but I think I want to start pursuing dentistry
I'm applying to UTHSCH for the Dental Hygiene program, my current GPA is a 3.2 i still have 6 more classes to go so I hope to get my grades up. I shadowed at a dental office BEFORE when I was going to apply to HCC Coleman but I obviously changed my mind. Did you have to take the HSRT? I have never taken the DAT because they didn't tell me I required it.
That's true, but these schools are trying to get to know about your ability to empathize and give back to your community through your application. It should be an accurate as possible representation of you and your passions. Also, volunteers, especially those who are working with vulnerable populations, should care and be sensitive to the people they're working with...not just be there to get volunteer hours. However, I agree that it's good to branch out and try new volunteer opportunities...as long as your heart is in the right place. Thanks for your comment!
Hello my name is Ashley, you’re in a school that I really wanted to go, I have a question for you, you said your GPA was3,16 but is it the science GPA or regular GPA? Did you get accepted with that GPA in Texas or you went back to post grad and retook that DAT score? I know it’s many questions, but your channel has been really caught on my eye, and I wanna learned more about applications process with Texas dental school so I could at least get prepared for myself when I’m applying for it. Thank you very much for your times
Thank you for this video! Congrats on your acceptance, you deserve it! New like and new sub! What college did you go to and what was your major? Do you think it's possible to get into dental school with a business degree?
What kind of volunteering did you do? I'm trying to find some volunteering opportunities near me and I don't know if I should be looking for a specific one or if I can volunteer in anything my heart desires..
Hey Krisyten! Thanks for posting this video! Its really helpful. But I was wondering how come even meharry or howard didn't offer you an interview the first time you applied? Did you apply late when you applied the first time? Also, when you retook the DAT did you retake it before you applied the first time?
Jonathan Baptiste thanks for watching! 😊 I have no idea why they didn’t offer me an interview. I believe I submitted all of my apps by November. And yes, I had taken the DAT twice before submitting my applications.
@@DoctorKrysten Oh I see. Well your in Dental School now so you've conquered lol. I'm applying not this coming cycle but next cycle in June 2021. I'm taking my DAT later this year.
Thank you for making this video. This is very helpful for us undergrad students that's really looking forward to dental school. Would you say it's more about what you know or who you know?
I'd definitely say it's more about what you know (GPA, DAT, dentistry in general) than who. I knew a lot of faculty and students at one dental school and didn't even get an interview. Focus on you and building up your application. You will be recognized for it.
@@DoctorKrysten disagree with dentistry in general, they don’t appreciate a strong knowledge of dentistry prior to dental school at your interview...you are not even accepted yet.

Great video!!! How many hours would recommend for shadowing?
Thank you! I’d aim for at least 100
thank you for sharing!!
Besides your bachelors degree and a great gpa... what other things would you suggest doing for dental school? I’ve heard a lot about people volunteering and doing research papers, as well as shadowing...
Yep! all those other things help. I talk about them in the video too :)
A bomb DAT score
Can you please make a video of how you get in at the end.
Wow 3.1 gpa is weak???? I don’t think my gpa was ever that high 😩 *don’t judge me *
Judgement free zone over here!! :)
HELLO! I want to apply to A&M for the 2025 cycle. However, I only did Human Anatomy and not physiology. Do you know by any chance if they accept Anatomy and Physiology the class together and do I have to take A&P 1 and 2? Or it has to be separate?
Hey sis! I love your honesty and congrats on making it into school! (btw howard is in dc. lol I could let you do my school like that😂)
Is being in the honors college really worth it for dental school or can you still get into dental school without honors? I’m also in Texas and I would love to go to A&M college of dentistry or move back to Michigan with my family and go to dental school there!!!
I don't know much about honors college because my undergrad never had one, but you can definitely still get in!!
What was your non traditional route to dental school? How did you get in non traditionally?
What college were you in at rice? My twin sister is currently a sophomore at Hanszen!!
Oh nice! I was in Will Rice College!
this is so touching. so beautiful to see how God's been working in your life :)
this video was very helpful! i currently am deciding on if i want to be dentist and this was amazing info! i hear that majoring in biology is best for being a dentist... i wanted to know if this is true or if i can major in anything i want and still get in ?
I don’t know what I should major in either
You can do anything just get a bachelors but you have to have the prereqs done for the program
do u need people to sign off on your shadowing/volunteer hours?
Yes
how did you ask for letters of recommendation ? i am at that barrier because my science classes are mixed between C's and B's
I know that's rough. But if that B is a high B, I'd try to start a relationship with that professor so that they could write you one. But going forward,, you wanna try to get to know your science profs very well BEFORE the class ends so that even if you don't make a perfect score, they know you personally and are more willing to write good things about you
loved your video❤️ thank you
Instagram Tea Tube thanks sooo much!! 💕
Hi can I ask how many hours of shadowing you did? You said it was quite a lot so I was wondering if you can provide a number. Thx
Around 100
@@DoctorKrysten thank you
Hey, I was wondering if you would whether or not dental schools like seeing medical experience on applications: I am currently a Certified Nursing Assistant at a Hospital but I think I want to start pursuing dentistry
ALSO i'm in the NSCS and NSLS so I hope they can see that I am involved in two societies
Does your school need a degree or cuz I'm in community College....
Thank you
Hi Krysten was you GPA referring to your science gpa?
My overall GPA. My science GPA was lower
Do you have to redo the entire application because of a weak DAT score ?
What's wrong with volunteering just for your application? You're doing something that you probably wouldn't have otherwise.
Very informative and fun. If you don’t mind me asking, what was your science gpa?
Jamaican just like you. What was the interview like?
Nerve wracking, but informative!
Anything your heart desires or you’re passionate about
Hey Krisyten!
Haha yep! Best of luck to you!! Keep me posted 😊
@@DoctorKrysten no doubt I will!
Jonathan I see you’re here supporting a sista too 😍
Was 3.1 your science gpa or your gpa overall?
Overall
Are you in now? Do a masters program
Yes, I’m in my third year of dental school
Is english really important for dental school
In the United States, yes.
In US absolutely yes
100% yess!
Thanks for the video🤩🤩!!! How did you gain acceptance into dental school? Did you do postbacc?
Yes I did!
What did u major in?
Thank you for making this video. This is very helpful for us undergrad students that's really looking forward to dental school. Would you say it's more about what you know or who you know?
I'd definitely say it's more about what you know (GPA, DAT, dentistry in general) than who. I knew a lot of faculty and students at one dental school and didn't even get an interview. Focus on you and building up your application. You will be recognized for it.
@@DoctorKrysten disagree with dentistry in general, they don’t appreciate a strong knowledge of dentistry prior to dental school at your interview...you are not even accepted yet.
I actually want you to be my mentor, I want to apply for dental school but I keep getting discouraged
Skip it Dentists will replaced with machines in the future.
