    Another question is that should i first apply for that universities with my psychology degree and then complete that courses or should i complete this courses first and then apply?

    Hey! I'm a sophomore in highschool currently but I am graduating next year (a year early) because I have almost all of my credits. I'm very interested in becoming a dentist. What gpa in highschool do u need to be accepted into pre dentistry and is it worth it?

    • @HaleySchultz
      @HaleySchultz  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi! So for every college I applied to, there was no major called pre-dental. You can be any major, but science majors are most common. I’m a biology major. GPA’s that get you accepted will vary by school and you can find all of that online or by talking with your counselor! I would share my GPA from high school but I’m fairly confident it’s more competitive now to be admitted than when I applied, so it wouldn’t be helpful.
      Let me know if you have any other questions and good luck! Dentistry is an awesome field and I’ve loved being pre-dental.

    how do we combat looking for volunteering activities and extra curriculars during covid?
    also, i am interested in music, do you think it would be okay to volunteer at a symphony camp and include that experience there in my application?

    • @HaleySchultz
      @HaleySchultz  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes to the music camp! Any activities that you like to do can make you a unique, genuine and strong applicant. During COVID, I would say to be persistent and open minded. Consider virtual volunteering and keep looking for offices that will let you shadow.

    Do you think a psychology major would be adequate? I am interested in the field but I don’t know if it will be challenging enough

    • @HaleySchultz
      @HaleySchultz  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It would be fine! To apply to dental school, you’ll still have to take all the “challenging” science courses that are pre-requisites to apply. This means you’d be taking 5-10 extra science courses that are likely not part of your degree program.

    Question about volunteering! I volunteered at a food bank my freshman year over the summer and into the fall year of 2019, and planned to resume my sophomore year (heavy workload that spring 2020 semester) when covid hit. The food bank closed for a short while and then opened, but I couldn't afford to resume volunteering. It's very close contact with extremely disadvantaged groups with poor means of shielding themselves from the virus, and I am a caregiver for 2 disabled relatives I see at least once every day.
    I'm hoping to resume volunteering this summer, but it'll be based on how vaccination roll out goes. My question: do you think this was too much of a gap between volunteering and dental schools will take note of that gap and not like it? Or do you think they'll be forgiving with covid times? It's the only thing I started freshman year (had no idea what I wanted to do lol) that I could resume and turn into a long-term commitment.

    On the college application where do you see the option for pre-dental. Like where is it? Is it under minors, or where?

    • @HaleySchultz
      @HaleySchultz  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Being pre-dental isn’t a major! It’s a trajectory of your course work. You want to choose a major that completes the pre-requisites for dental school or make sure you take those classes in addition to the classes for your major.
      I was a human biology major in undergrad on a pre-dental track.

      I don’t have a ton of advice on this topic since I had in person classes back then. I’d say though 2 of my 3 professor letters I didn’t “know” the professors super well. I just asked over email if they’d be willing to write one and if we could set up a meeting for them to get to know me better! Usually during that meeting they would kind of interview me and ask what I wanted in the letter.

    • @HaleySchultz
      @HaleySchultz  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You would need to complete the pre-requisite classes for dental school including biology 1&2 with lab, general chemistry 1&2 with lab, etc in order to apply to dental school even if you do attend a dental hygiene program first. Some of those courses are also pre-requisites for the dental hygiene program admission too. Either way, you’d be required to take every pre-requisite for the dental schools you want to apply to.
      Any bachelors degree in Nutrition, another science or dental hygiene will be fine. It’s up to whatever you prefer, but you need to complete the same pre-requisites either way. I hope that answers your question! Good luck!

    Can I become a dental assistant after pre dental ? Without going to dental school after ?

    • @HaleySchultz
      @HaleySchultz  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It depends what state you live in. Some states require you to go to dental assisting school and become certified while other states do not require certification. My state, Michigan, does not require certification.
      So, a lot of my peers have been dental assistants while taking their college classes or during a gap year before dental school.
      You would not need a college degree to be a dental assistant. So, if that is your long term goal, you probably don’t need to pay to get a complete bachelor’s degree from a university!

    can you talk more about receiving a minor in business? Is it something required in order to one day open your own clinical practice or do you want to do it for experience? Also I’m a first year college student going pre dental as well and currently undeclared thinking of going into Neuroscience or Biology or possibly even Cell Molecular and Development Biology major do you have any advice or recommendations? I’d like to know you take on it :) thank you !

    • @HaleySchultz
      @HaleySchultz  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think any major in biology will be most useful to prepare you for dental school curriculum.
      And minoring in something related to business is definitely not required to be able to have your own practice in the future. My classes have mostly taught me creative marketing skills. I would still have a lot to learn about insurance, finances and such. Most people say that you learn the business end after you graduate and start working in different practices for a little bit. Most dental schools also do a “Practice Management” course as part of your curriculum.

      @@marqwayviuschapman-trigg2514 Hello Marq. I'm a dental hygienist here. If you aren't sure if being a dentist is for you for its long path, you can think about dental hygiene for sure. Dental hygiene is usually a 3 year program at a college or university. (Both work.) As a dental hygienist, you work mostly on the preventative aspect of dentistry (regular cleaning, polishing, whitening, etc. If you're into orthodontics, you can get more training and work with braces.) Overall, there is less stress and cost in terms of education. Let me know if you have more questions about dental hygiene/ transition from hygiene to dentistry.

      Great question! I’m sure attending a university with a “rigorous” reputation and still achieving a high GPA does carry weight when applying. However, I think it may be the smarter choice to attend a university that will cost less for you (scholarships, in-state tuition, etc) in the long run. You can make any university a great experience and having less undergrad debt is going to be really helpful since dental school is so expensive!

      That’s how I did it! And follow up with an email thanking them for agreeing to write it (if you did ask in person). Then a few years later you can reply to that same email and ask for them to start working on the letter/to meet with you again.

      A lot of the professors at my large university would only write them for X amount of students each cycle across med/pharmacy/dental etc so it’s key to ask early!

    I'm a 2nd year premed student thinking about changing my major to a predental👍😅.
    Reason I'm changing : CHEMISTRY IS BECOMING SUPER DAMN HARD🤦‍♀️

    • @HaleySchultz
      @HaleySchultz  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lots of chem to get into dental school too unfortunately! You have to take general chem 1&2 with lab and orgo 1&2 with lab plus both are sections on the DAT.
      Keep working hard! You got this!

    • @HaleySchultz

      You’ll be okay! It’ll be hard the first exam but then you’ll get the hang of things. Ask questions early and often to be sure you really understand the concepts!

      Not too bad! I was in a privileged position to not have to work during the semesters, so I could make time to rest throughout the weeks with studying and extracurriculars. It’s easier to stay motivated if you’re really passionate about it.

      Do you want to work as a hygienist for a while before applying to dental school?

      Haley Schultz that’s the thing, i’m a junior in highschool and i’m undecided on if i want to do that.. what do you think would be smarter ?

    • @HaleySchultz
      @HaleySchultz  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s totally a personal preference. If you choose to work in dental hygiene for a while first, you could save up some money to take out less loans for dental school & you would learn more about dentistry beforehand. Some cons might be not wanting to go back to school after taking a break, balancing work with studying for the DAT or taking any leftover pre-requisites.
      My classmate @ dds.tristan on Instagram might be able to help! She is an RDH and now is in dental school. Good luck!

    Best tip is to avoid dentistry. I wish i knew that the median debt for denistry school is at 400k. Opening a private office will cost about 500k. And that the dentistry field is becoming oversaturated

    • @Darklovesto
      @Darklovesto 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      i doubt the median is 400k and i doubt that everywhere is oversaturated with dentists

    • @goldendiploma9865
      @goldendiploma9865 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Your right the median debt is probably closer to 300k. According to ADEA.org (link below) the majority (39%) of dental students have >300k of debt but 17 % of dental student have >200k of debt and 25% have between 200-300k . But with interest on the loans,licensing fees..ect it will eventually cost closer to 400k .
      And regarding job market saturation. According to the BLS.gov and American Dental Association (links below) the USA is expected to need 11,600 new dentists between 2018 -2028 (about 1000 new dentist/ year) but in 2018 alone 6,305 new dentists graduated up from 6,238 in 2017. Another 6k graduated in 2019 and ever year for the foreseeable future. The flood of new graduates each year are forcing salaries and job security to go lower. The oversupply of pharmacist and now the unfolding exodus from Pharmacy is a good example of what Dentistry may soon experience (link below).

    If you are going to become a dentist you should learn about orthotropics that way your patients have better looking faces
