I love imagining what the painter would think about someone taking such time and care to restore their art. That their work meant something to someone.
I'd like to think the artist saw his work preserved and is happy. ❤
I'm a little embarrassed to admit that I've never thought of that before. Very moving, actually.
It would be cool if he did a episode with an artist that needs help restoring there old work. Like Tears or such 😮 ❤
I was thinking exactly that. I often imagine the painter meeting Julian. The excitement, mutual admiration and hours of discussion about their art. What a dream!
😅@@maggs131
I restore old furniture. After a particularly long, filthy, challenging day today I thought, "I need to watch Julian Baumgartner clean a painting." Fixing old broken things is important work. It returns beauty to the world that we though was lost - no matter how mildew-and-cobwebby my hair is right now. Thanks for the reminder and inspiration.
Restoration is respect for some ones creation that means everything to those who own it, a wonderful talent or skill.
Where are you located and is there a business website that I can use to find you?? Thank You
@jennifersmith9420 I'm 30 miles west of Boston. No website but if you're local, we can find a way to connect!
The best thing about this channel is we get an explanation every video of what is being done. He never assumes we know everything just because he may have said it previously. I feel like a new viewer every episode and it always a cool experience. I have also learned a TON about paintings watching this channel.
I was thinking the same thing.. and even though he has explained it a million times it still feels like he enjoys the telling.
i'm glad he does because art is like greek to me and i can never remember all the little details
I was stunned at the cleaning and double varnish removal process. The painting brightened so beautifully, it's like magic
I agree. It's like the whole scene went from dusk to a golden sunrise.
After the first clean/varnish removal I thought "huh was the artist known for nostalgia because he painted in muddy golden hues?" and then as the second cleaning happened I was just "woah!"
Wow.. I didn't see a single person until that second cleaning.. Good stuff..
I didn’t see the house in the background on the left until the first cleaning. It just got better and better.
Same! Not only did the colors get revitalized, it's as if the scene itself came to life as well, with the people going about their day. The affect is just amazing.
I thought that the houses on the right side of the river was a forest
I wonder if the owners have ever seen their painting clean and have seen what their grandparents saw. The wow moment when the tears are mended and the painting is cleaned never gets old, still love those moments.
This one really made me emotional. This wasn’t a painting for auction or for a wealthy person to hang in their gallery. It was a piece of the clients life. Memories made long ago. And now the clients children and grandchildren can begin their own memories. Beautiful work Julian. As usual.
Dude I felt the exact same way.
I love your work. It's so comforting to see someone who totally understands what they're doing and doing it to the best of their abilities.
Not just the doing, but I also highly appreciate the technical explanations behind it. So not just what is done, but also how and why.
Beautiful work
Thank god this channel is showing art restoration again.
I'm not surprized, but I am amazed every time this man erases the horrible damage in a piece of art.
The name of “this man” is Baumgartner, Julian Baumgartner.
That was the most dramatic change I have seen after your multipart cleaning. Your clients will be stunned. Wish we could witness their first look.
I don't know if they had tears, but I definitely did.
Looked like someone smeared mud on the painting in those first shots of it. And then as you cleaned it, I yelled out “There’s PEOPLE in it?!” Lol
And as you tacked down the back of the painting, folded the edges, neatly tacked the corners and snipped the errant thread, my heart said “This is why I love him. Such precision!” Thank you for all your hard work!
Baumgartner Therapy.
My parents also have a picture of their hometown in the Netherlands in their living room, and it's been there for over 50 years. If something were to ever happen to it, I would be devastated and would also do whatever I could to restore it. It's tied to countless memories for their children and grandchildren, so I understand completely how this family felt. I'm so glad they were able to have it restored - what a wonderful gift!
I thought I came for the tear repair it was the cleaning and stripping of the dirt and varnish that really changed everything. Thank you Julien.
What I think is amazing is it's very likely the current owners have never seen it in it's original color like this.
Because of the old varnish covering the old grime, it's making it look even better than their memories.
Julian, you restore so much more than paintings and their histories. You restore hearts.
I can fully understand why they had such an emotional investment in this painting. Dirty and torn, it was still beautiful. Fully restored, they will see it as their ancestors first saw it long ago and marvel at the long hidden beauty of it. Thank you for bringing it back and letting us see that beauty.🕊🦋📚🐈⬛🫖
Your Squarespace promotions really are creative and well made 😅 they must really love him
That poor painting was so dirty, I didn't see half the colors or figures in it. Great job!
I volunteered at my local library repairing damaged books. We used the Japanese paper exactly how you tore it into strips. It would repair tears in certain types of paper.
Again as usual, an outstanding restoration. You my dear sir in your art and craft, are becoming a national treasure.
What a sweet painting! And wow! The restoration is exactly what we’ve come to expect from Julian. From tears and tears to thanks for the great work.
As always it is marvelous to watch a painting come back to life; not just with the very much needed repairs, but with a through cleaning to see what the artist intended. A great way to start my day!
The sky really came alive with the cleaning. It’s amazing how much of the beauty of a piece gets obscured by grime.
Incredible rebirth as the repairs ,cleaning, varnish removal and retouching proceeds...I am in awe at your abilities and devotion to revealing the artist's work. Thank you for sharing this with us.😎👍
After weeks of watching your videos, I finally catch a brand new video the same day it comes out! Huzzah! Thank you for putting these videos out, Julian!
I marvel at your ability to restore paintings ----- that would have the rest of us in tears ----
Always nice to see the transformation that happens when a painting is cleaned.
Oh Julian, when I saw the cleaning process and the seawall become visible, I was overcome. And then the rest of the restoration. I’ve watched all your videos but for some reason, this one got to me. Like you said, memories. I often wish we could see your clients reactions. ❤
What a gorgeous transformation. That second cleaning revealed so much beautiful detail--I had no idea all those people were in the painting until that second round of soap. That was probably the biggest tear I've ever seen you repair, and you did a phenomenal job. I'm sure the customers will be thrilled.
I can imagine myself receiving a restored painting from Julian's studio. After one look, I'd have to sit down because I'd be sobbing with joy.
No matter how often I watch Julian at work, he never ceases to amaze me. It is like watching a magician at work, but one who shows us how the magic is achieved.
This is my all-time favourite channel.
Julian, you make all your restorations look easy but I know that your talent has taken years and hard work to achieve!! Thanks for sharing with us!
I never get tired of watching the damage vanish under Julian’s retouching brush.
The beautiful colours and details emerging from the darkness are incredible. A beautiful painting wonderfully restored.
I am shedding tears for this beautiful painting that has suffered such poor treatment. There has been so much to see that has been hidden.
I really think that my favorite part of these videos is the cleaning process. it's like watching a painting come back to life. it's incredible. thank you so much for sharing your work with us, Julian !

For me, the joy in watching you work is in the cleaning. To see all that buried treasure come to light is something that never ceases to awe me.
There will be new tears of joy when the painting is unveiled to them and see the delicacy of what has emerged! Stunning work, thankyou.
I sure the clients shed new tears, of joy, at your restoration. Another magnificent job.
Seeing someone exhibit so much love for art and the understanding for the importance of its preservation makes me so emotional. Adore your work!
I think there's going to be a lot more tears coming when this goes home...but this time, the good kind. It's such a blessing to have restored a painting with such sentimental value and family history. ❤
This painting passes the arm-length viewing test, imo. Truly amazing work as always, Julien!
Your explenaitions never get boring, no matter how often I might have listend to them. Never stop narrating what you are doing. Please.
I like these paintings because they are a window to what urban environments used to look like before modern times. I think this one might be one of my favorites. I would have loved to have lived in a place like that. One of the things I've fancied for some time now was a sort of google maps street view but instead of our current streets, we'd get a reimagined version of how places used to looked like centuries ago. I know it's impossible without a ton historical knowledge and artistic liberties, but I wish it was a thing.
It was as if the sun rose on this village during the restoration. Beautifully done.
I'm aphantasia and art means very little to me but I absolutely love watching experts work. I dont know why but it calms me. Thanks for videographing and sharing your work. I love to hear stories behind the painting as well. I think it's a testament to your ability that a painting that means so much to a family needed to be restored, and they chose you to restore and conserve it. I think that makes it all the better to watch when you work on it. So truly, thank you for bringing me peace through your wonderful videos.
wow - imagine seeing a painting from your childhood get destroyed like that - and then it comes back looking like it was painted yesterday. bravo Julian , bravo.
Wow! 😳 What a difference. I can’t believe it took only 2 or 2-1/2 hrs. to retouch. Stunning restoration, thanks Julian! 👏🏻✨
It was beautiful watching that tear just disappear with your retouching. Thank you for sharing it with us!
This is one of the most dramatic changes in terms of color that i've ever seen on a restoration. I could not believe or expect that those were the actual colors of the painting behind all that grime. Beautiful.
You are undoubtedly one of the most talented and equally enjoyable people to watch on this platform. 😮That was just so beautiful and satisfying to watch. It was quite emotional, to see it, restored back to its glory.
Oh, now that was incredible! I hope that the owners are amazed, just as I am, at the transformation! Fantastic job! Awesome piece of artwork too- the texture and colours are beautiful! Thanks Julian!
I will never get tired of seeing the life and emotion come back to a painting as it is cleaned.
I’m not sure what’s more amazing. The original artwork, the fact it was almost lost forever, or the care and skill that saved this.
Sheer delight when you cleaned the painting and the subtle pinks were allowed to shine through.
That was the most rewarding cleaning I've seen on this channel. The grime was dulling so much of the color- it's beautiful now. This restoration was worth doing for that reason alone.
More than anything, I love his warmth, commentary, erudition, and extraordinary skill. His empathy for both the artists' work and the owners is truly heart-warming. Bravo!
Every time I watch your work, I think about the artist looking down, and being so proud that someone with such skill and care help take care of their creation.
I sometimes wonder if a hundred years from now a restorer finds your video of a piece to be repaired and finds it valuable. Lovely work as always - cheers.
Honestly I believe in future people will seek out the pictures seen in these videos simply because Julian's work will add so much to their desirability and value to many
I actually teared up a little, while watching the cleaning. I can't imagine what the owner's reaction must have been. All the memories of this painting, all the sadness of it being damaged, only for it to come back so bright and beautiful and loved. Just beautiful, man.
The tears - *tears* analogy was beautiful. I don't tend to like videos before watching them at least most of the way through, but you got me with that alone.
Honestly, this was the best square space argument you’ve had. Both behind the scenes. Genius. I say this because you’ve been sponsored by them for YEARS. Very creative.
when you cleaned the sky I thought WOW, then you cleaned the first building and Oh My God, Amazing what's hiding underneath, Thanks for the simple joy of watching your video :)
Now with the cleaned painting the childhood memories can be brighter than the real events might have been...
Thanks (again) for sharing your work with us. You make it look easy to bring an old painting back to its original glory.
I love how hard it was for you to come up with a reason for someone to undo your work.. LOLOL.. I agree!!
I’m just amazed with every single video I see from this channel!
I love how much respect and attention you put into each piece entrusted to your care, regardless of where they came from. Such a rare quality these days! You honor your craft! ❤
I never tire of watching you work, nor of the perfectly chosen music that overlays the magic.
Best one I’ve seen on your channel.
I only wish that we were privy to the owners’ first sighting of this superb restoration.
Excellent. All that is missing is a reveal to the owners and their reaction. I love the human flourish that you always focus on.
I’d love to be able to step into some of these paintings they are so beautiful!!!
You make art when conserving art. Thank you for your passion and gifts, Julian. What an honor to follow you!
Owners must have shed tears of joy when they got back this masterwork of yours.
It's always a joy to see how an old, yellowed or destroyed painting becomes the way the artist last saw it. I love seeing this metamorphosis... especially when it's done in such a relaxed atmosphere, like in your studio...
You are healing the world, one damaged painting at a time
Your videos make Mondays worth it. Thank you
there much have been a lot of tears when this was delivered to the family.....tears and tears
*shocked Pikachu face* the transformation of this painting is amazing! It doesn't even look like the same painting. Amazing work, as always
What a beautiful painting. I did not expect it to be as bright as it turned out. You continue to perform miracles.
This might be weird to say, but I really admire the way you word your sentences and structure your thoughts. You speak so eloquently and calmly that I feel like I’m listening to a professor give a lecture. It’s really helpful for me because it’s helped me structure essays for school much more cohesively. Thank you
It was amazing to see the transformation after the lowest level of grime was removed from the painting. Your restoration is beautifully done. Somehow it always seems that fixing something - art, woodwork and even software designs - takes more patience, knowledge, care and technique than the original works, and those who do it well are master craftsmen. You are truly talented.
As well as the usual old varnish and grime, there was that horrific tear to deal with. And as usual, the finished restoration is breathtaking; thank you for another fascinating video.
From cloudy to clear! At first this painting was drab and murky. The story you shared and your reverent care and cleaning of the painting really endeared me to this wonderful piece. Magical❤
Holy cow, we haven't seen a painting this dirty in quite a while! That second layer of grime didn't just mute the colors, it completely covered them.
Absolutely beautiful repair and retouching! I can’t see where the damage was. Julian, you are truly a master artist.
That is one of those paintings that makes you go “wow” when you see the before and after! It’s such a pretty painting and it looks even better clean! Nice job!
The end result is just amazing. The life in the final work makes it very clear that it wasn't supposed to be a depressing picture. When I first saw the damage, the image of the picture was so unimpressive I wondered why a person would even want to conserve it. Well, I got my answer in the end. Just wonderful!
My husband came to see what was wrong, because I gasped when you started the second clean. You are a master. I would have loved to see the owners' reactions to this one!
Yet another superb job, Mr B! I've reached a point, after several years of watching your marvelous videos, of reacting calmly on seeing a painting as badly hurt as this one was....and saying, "Oh, Mr B's got this! It'll be okay and this piece will be gorgeous again!", and, of course, that's what happened with this one. Joyful and riveting to watch. You're the BEST in the business, Mr B! I am truly happy you're there, so brilliantly restoring so much beauty...it makes me smile. Thank you! 😊
Super happy when I called out for an inter-leaf and he went right over to get the supplies ❤
Your ability to color match by eye is like a super power! It's amazing to watch the repairs literally disappear!! 😮❤
Thanks from Holland for saving this beautiful painting 🙏
Julian,
Every time you start to retouch a painting I think to myself, "He must be having an off day because those colors don't match at all"! Then a few dots and dabs later the damage magically disappears before our eyes! You are extremely talented! Thank you for the passion and care you exert to honoring the original artist.
I’m glad the owners elected to conserve this painting. It may not be a highly monetarily valuable painting, but I really like this one.
Excellent presentation. Thank you. So glad to see this one saved. Many thanks to the owners for that. This was money well spent in my eyes.
I'd love to see more dutch painters aswell
And another magic trick by Julian, pulled off and archived. Excellent job and hopefully will remain whole ( not hole ) for the rest of the paintings existence. Thanks for posting 👍
I always want your vids to never end, wish they were twice as long 👏👏👏.
