Honestly, it fits the character perfectly. And the story actually make sense in the end! A man who has nothing, were given something, and is threaten to have it taken away. That sort of person would do ANYTHING for that something. Persona 3 is fucking awesome.
I like gloomy Makoto. Not every character needs to beam with optimism and positive charisma. He's endured tragedy and is at a point where he's desensitized to events around him rather than constantly cracking jokes or putting a smile on his face to try concealing it. It makes the story better IMO upon reaching the end of it.

He actually starts to care at the end of the movies where he said that after spending time with his friends, he finally feels alive again. I don't think anyone is praising or encouraging depression, I think they're just pointing out that his attitude is why he's their favorite. Personally I think his attitude makes the games + animes funnier than if he was more like Ren, for example, but that doesn't mean I support or like the reason for it. You can like something without liking what created it.
People like it because they have the nostalgia and childish affection for the emo style back in the day. It's edgy adults being edgy... I don't hate and would even say I understand his attitude and enjoy it but only because there is actual reason behind it like you explained. I appreciate that he lightens and becomes more caring towards the end because of the love he felt for his friends.

Which is why I love Cloud & Squall from FFVII & FFVIII since they start off with cold personalities & introverted personalities but they eventually warm up to their allies overtime & start to show more care towards them. All because of their character development that paid off well in my opinion.

Well yeah I really like the way joker (seems) to portrayed in the animation a guy who jokey and kinda overly confident like how he’s all flashy in the game jumping on shadows and ripping the masks off. @@odd0 dude, I believe you won't be disappointed, over everything else the P3 movies had to offer, Makoto's journey was one of the best parts of it all (it does come at the expense of certain other scenes not being adapted, but I find the traid-off worth it, since we already have all that stuff in the games, it gave me more of a reason to watch them than "look at this anime trying to emulate something you already experienced in the video game but it was 10× better there"). He was already my favorite persona protag purely just over how his journey is implied in the games, and the movies took that, made it the central focus and amplified it ten fold.

@@meikisaragi1445 at the beginning of the game, he is kinda insufferable, but tbf, he has no parents, he doesn't have any friends, and he's also a teenager. also the whole point of persona 3 was overcoming a fear of death, a certainty in a world filled with uncertainties. however, not through coping with the fear of death by becoming depressed, but knowing, that despite the fact that anything can end in a moment, that you should still not only find joy in life, but express joy to others. i mean, makoto sacrificed himself for his friends, because they were the only people there for him, and he would accept his fate if it meant his friends could continue enjoying life.
Theres a total of 4 persona 3 movies, Spring of Birth, Midsummer Knight's Dream (Where the clips end on), Falling Down and Winter of Rebirth. They're all good watches, but only available in English subs. They're all on youtube, so it's pretty easy to set like, 7 hours aside to watch them all in bulk. It's probably the second best persona anime, to the original Persona 4 anime. Better after playing through the game though, as they're not exactly faithful to the original, nor a good substitute for the game itself.
I really wish they made it a series instead of movies. They left out a lot of interactions with other characters with him & I think that’s really why the movies didn’t hit as much as the game. However, the way they portrayed him in the movies I feel was better in some cases especially because he had a voice. & they added certain things that was good for ps3 as well.
