  • CAT 3208 Turbo 10.4L 1985 Ford F8000. After more pump tuning and finding that it wasn't even getting full throttle, this rig really rips now.

    I love how at certain points it sounds like a powerstroke

      @Two_trucks yeah it's definitely similar. They have the same firing order, and the hot side exhaust is a similar layout. In person, it sounds more unique. It has more of a deep drone where the 7.3 has a crisp slap. Thanks for watching 👍

    Fantastic truck, love it. Cool how the cab and the dash is the same as the F150 of the day

      Thank you. It is interesting. It's a pickup cab sitting on a big rig chassis.

    Look into the marine pieces for this engine. They had these things set at much higher hp/torque rating. Up to 375hp they're reliable in boats, go past that and they blow. Given that it's under less load in your truck, you can push it

    • @DieselFuelNetwork
      @DieselFuelNetwork  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Already ahead of you on that. And they were actually up to 435hp. I'm planning to install marine injectors and see if the stock turbo will keep up. Then go from there.

      @Hoost 305 I don't want to upset Gale Banks too much 😉 "if there's smoke, there's not enough air" Turbo upgrade will certainly follow

      There won't be enough cooling in a truck mount for marine parts

      @DieselFuelNetwork  ปีที่แล้ว

      @Diesel Lives Matter for short pulls it will be fine. Only one way to find out .And with a water to air intercooler and likely water injection as well.

    What's your take on the 3208 overall? I was warned to stay away from them as they're throw away engines so I bought an F700 with the 7.8 instead. Love the 7.8 but I know where two 3208 powered mediums are sitting, waiting to be saved. One in an L700 (swapped in years ago) and one in a C600 or C700. I want to save them and run them as cruisers but am leery of the Cat V8s. Both are like 210 horse non turbo if memory serves right.

      They're reputation as a "throw away engine" is misleading. It's only for the fact that they don't have replaceable cylinder liners like most heavy duty diesel engines. But they are rebuildable just like any engine and can be bored if needed. Like any medium duty engine It's not going to last for a million miles but they are good reliable engines. The naturally aspirated 210hp was set to rev to 2800rpm, so they do live a little harder life than a turbo version set to 2200rpm or 2600rpm for the 250hp. Either way, if you're going to just cruise, or even work the truck I would say definitely go for it. The only thing I would be concerned about is if they've been sitting a long time, is the injection pump free and in good working condition. A rebuilt pump can range from $700-$1000. But overall, I love the 3208 and have heard from a lot of people that love them too, and have had great experiences. Also they sound awesome. In marine applications they were available as high as 435 HP. Look up Oliver 2255 pulling tractor to see what they can really do when tuned to the max. You should definitely save those rigs. I hope that helps you. Thanks for watching and good luck. 🚛💨💨

      Very small main and rod journals from what I can remember. Which is perfectly fine if you keep it low power

    I'm looking at a c70. 1970. And was thinking of putting a 350 Chev. Engine in it how,what or could it be don't on a tiny $$$.how many mpgs do u get with ur ford.its super awesome....

    • @DieselFuelNetwork
      @DieselFuelNetwork  8 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @AntZim-i3z Thanks. I'm not sure how cheaply you could get that together, but I don't think it would cost much. As long as the rest of the truck is solid and doesn't need a ton of work to make it road worthy, it should be pretty straightforward. The old Chevy/GMC medium dutys did sometimes come with a 350. My friend has a C50 or C60 with a 350 and Allison auto. I've never actually calculated millage with my truck, but the internet says it should get around 9 mpg, and I think that's loaded. I can't imagine it's much better than that, though. Especially after turning up the injection pump and driving it like I do, lol. Good luck with the truck if you get it, and thanks for watching

    Just drive it in hi range if there's no load.

    Get a egt probe between the headers and the turbo and turn it up more

    What trans do you have and it that a 2 speed rear axle? I don't think your supposed to use the clutch when shifting.

    • @DieselFuelNetwork
      @DieselFuelNetwork  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Spicer 5 speed synchronized. Clutching is required to split gears with the 2 speed axle. I'm going to do a video on how to shift with 2 speed axle.
      You can float gears when only shifting the trans. But not required and just as slow. I prefer to use the clutch

    • @diesellivesmatter
      @diesellivesmatter ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DieselFuelNetwork if it's synchronized it's probably better to use the clutch. I'm surprised your supposed to clutch with the 2 sp I never did.

    • @DieselFuelNetwork
      @DieselFuelNetwork  ปีที่แล้ว

      @Diesel Lives Matter I'm no expert on split shifting. This is my first one. But there's a great Eaton video from the 80s explaining how to operate their axle. I don't clutch when shifting the axle up. Only when going up a gear while shifting the axle back down. But I always clutch for transmission shifts only because it's synchronized and I suck at floating gears

    I’m wondering, why doesn’t this thing have a jake brake?

    • @DieselFuelNetwork
      @DieselFuelNetwork  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      3208 never came with a jake brake. It was also never available with an exhaust brake. On the mountain It has basically no engine braking. It will sail right up past 3000 rpm if you let it (I never have)

    I want to put a 3208 pump on a 7.3 powerstroke

    • @DieselFuelNetwork
      @DieselFuelNetwork  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That would be interesting. To do that, you would also need to somehow adapt mechanical pintle injectors as well. Anything can be done. I've seen custom mechanical powerstrokes. Usually, I think they are using a bosch inline 8 cylinder pump.
      Look into bosh inline 8 cylinder injection pumps. I've seen them used on ebay. It might be a better option, especially for future upgrades to the pump

      I'd love to, believe me. I really want to get a trailer for it and see what it can do. But it's not in the budget right now. As far as loading the back up with blocks or lumber or anything for that matter, it really won't be able to fit much weight on the bed. It's not that big. But I'll see if I can come up with something. BTW, 20,000 lbs is the actual legal limit that this truck can haul approximately. It has a 29,900 GVW, and I estimate it weighs about 10,000. As far as GVCW, there's no rating on the sticker, but according to the original sales brochure, it should be around 50,000, so theoretically, it should be capable of towing 40,000 lbs. Trust me, I want to pull a load as much as you want to see it, but I don't know when that's gonna happen. So, hopefully, you'll stay tuned for future videos. Thanks for watching and commenting. I really appreciate it. 🚛💨💨
