    Sweet! One of my favorite engines! Used to drive a Ford LN8000 with this motor coupled to a Fuller Roadranger 10 speed for a mail contractor. Could keep up with many cars from a dead stop if I was empty. lol Can never forget having to pull the plunger out of the fuel solenoid, pump it back by hand and stall it to get it shut it down on more than a few occasions over its life. Had over 550K on it and absolutely no major work other than PMs (ok, and fuel solenoids)on the motor when the boss sold it to a farmer. Wish i could drive that truck again!

      That's awesome. I love hearing stories about running these engines and working the old trucks. If you have time check out some of my newer videos with this truck. It wasn't even at its full potential in this video. Was originally governed to 2200rpm and now it's at 2800rpm with a bit more fuel as well. Sounds even better and it's pretty quick for a 10,000 lb rig. Thanks for watching.

    Did not know they stuck those little 3208 in fords. I thought they had those little tiny Detroit's in them
    I knew they stuck that 3208 in the topkicks and kodiak's though
    Basically what the GM version of this Ford model really is

    • @DieselFuelNetwork
      @DieselFuelNetwork  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Indeed. it was actually designed for Ford by Caterpillar in the early 70s. However, the 80s Fords with the CAT are definitely less common than the GM trucks. A detroit 8.2 "fuel pincher" equipped Ford was designated F800. also, some F700s had them as well.
      When fitted with the 3208, another zero was added to the model, making it F8000. Turbocharged variants are less common as well, as most where naturally aspirated.
      Thanks for watching. 🙏

    Dude I was driving rigs in 1977 with 13 speed road ranger gearboxes and you never ever use the clutch to shift except in takeoff from a dead stop. you have to feather the gas to syncronize the rpns so you shift with no clutch effortlessly. First rig was Detroit Diesel 671 with factory supercharger and that bitch is really hard to shift cause if you rest your foot on the gas it shoots to 3000 RPM cause of the blower.

    • @DieselFuelNetwork
      @DieselFuelNetwork  23 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@davewalker3979 Hey brother, I appreciate your advice. However, while that is the correct way to drive a non synchronized transmission like a 13 speed road ranger, my transmission is synchronized. It's a Spicer 5 speed. It operates exactly like a car or light duty truck trans. I can shift without the clutch but it's not required with this trans. Also this has a 2 speed rear axle, and there are certain shifting sinarios that require clutching in order for the rear axle to shift smoothly. Again no disrespect, I definitely appreciate someone with experience giving tips. I also love hearing the stories of the trucking glory days with screaming Detroits. I wanna put a 3208 in a 3500 Silverado dually from 2000. What ECM does it use? is there any thing I can use to rig up the electrical system like a CAT ECU ? which tranny is on this ford?

    • @DieselFuelNetwork
      @DieselFuelNetwork  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No ECM, it's mechanical injection. The only thing required to run is power to the fuel shut-off solenoid and, of course, the starter and alternator.
      The transmission is a Spicer CM-5552A 5-speed. Most of these had 5 speeds, though the 3208 in other trucks was sometimes equipped with an eaton 7 speed or 10 speed. Those are much larger than the 5 speed. There is also a newer 6 speed that I believe can work.
      It can definitely be done. I've seen the 3208 swapped into F350s, and there's even a Toyota Land Cruiser on TH-cam with a 3208 swap. The turbo 3208 weighs about 1,600 lbs, and even the 5 speed trans is not light.
      Keep in mind that there are differences between the naturally aspirated 3208 and the turbo 3208. The block is different as it has the specific oil feed and drain for the turbo, and more importantly, there are piston oil squirters and a larger oil cooler. And I believe the block and internals are stronger.
      I hope this helps. Good luck with the project, and if i missed anything, let me know. Thanks for watching.

      Definitely a 3126. The 3208 just isn't very loud. It's more of a drone. I'm gonna add a long 4" section that 180s back to the stacks to try and get a more crisp and loud note from it. Inspired by trucks in Thailand and some Scanias in Europe that run really long exhaust under the truck to get a louder resonance. Gonna have a video when I do it. 3208 vs 8.3 cummins. thoughts on the 2, go.

    • @DieselFuelNetwork
      @DieselFuelNetwork  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't have much knowledge on the 8.3 but I can tell you they were both available with 250hp in a truck application and 435-460hp in marine applications. While the 8.3 has replaceable sleeves, the 3208 has a siemese cast block which makes rebuilding more difficult. However the 3208 and previous 1150/1160 Caterpillar engine has been around since the 70s so parts availability new or used is plentiful. As far as hot rodding goes the 8.3 equipped with a P-pump can be turned up a bit like a 5.9 though I haven't seen any high horsepower ones. The 3208 can be turned up a bit with literally the turn of a couple screws. Then there's marine 435hp injectors and pump plungers and with a larger/better turbo the 3208 can make serious power. Look up Oliver 2255 pulling tractor and you'll see and hear what the 3208 is really capable of. I also just happen to love that it's a 10.4L V8. I actually think the cummins sounds better despite the title of my video lol. Thanks for watching brother 🚛💨💨

      Haha thanks I guess. They're very good reliable engines. If you live where it gets cold they start very easily in winter. Most trucks have the naturally aspirated (non turbo) version usually at around 210 HP. I haven't driven a naturally aspirated 3208 but I've heard they do pull a load pretty good. A turbocharged version like mine will typically go more miles and be in better condition because they rev much lower. For example my 215hp version was factory set to 2200rpm and there for saw much less stress over its life than a 210hp N/A engine factory set at 2800rpm. There was also a 250hp @2600rpm turbo version available, that's the one to look for. But really, for an old truck, you take what you can find. Let me know if there's anything more specific you would like to know. Thanks for watching.

    ? Is 3208 slow or fast ?? I don't know

    • @DieselFuelNetwork
      @DieselFuelNetwork  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's kind of hard to answer. My question back would be, compared to what? The 3208 turbo in its day was a good performer. I don't think fast is the word. However, I believe this truck, after turning up the pump, is faster than any similar medium duty from the same era. But to compare it to a regular truck, here are the numbers. A stock 7.3 powerstroke f250 runs mid to high 17 second 1/4 mile at about 75mph. I have run 20.0 at 68mph and can definitely improve. My shifting was very slow. This truck weighs about 10,000 lbs. I think that's impressive performance for a stock 38 year old medium duty with only the pump turned up. It doesn't even have an intercooler. I like details, so that was a really long reply... • @DieselFuelNetwork
      @DieselFuelNetwork  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Well, it's a classic diesel engine designed in the 60s. And first used in the 70s. By modern standards, it's not a powerhouse. It's a medium duty engine, so it should be compared to other medium engines from that time, like the 8.2 detroit and 555 cummins, both of which have comparable power figures in truck applications. While the 3208 in a truck was only available as high as 250hp, it was offered in a wanderlodge RV intercooled at 300hp. In marine applications, it produced as much as 435hp. One thing it definitely does have is torque. The combined rating of my truck for towing is 50,000 lbs, and some larger trucks with 3208s were rated for 80,000 combined. Not fast pulling that kind of load, but they used to do it every day. Think of a 426 Hemi from the 60s amazing at the time, but today, a Hellcat has nearly double the power. An engine as old as a 3208 is, at this point, a classic that should just be appreciated for what it once was. Thanks for watching. I appreciate the comment, and I love any excuse to write about classic trucks or cars. Thanks 🏁🚛🏁
