    I finally bought a baitcaster after using spinning reels for years. At this point the only advantage I see so far is that I don't have to flip the bail anymore to cast. Also it looks really cool. That's about it.

      Well that is an advantage. It seems way faster. So for sporting it makes sense. Faster means more casts. More fish.

      I have to agree with you I also can cast very well with both i rather use the spinning now with the new lines they have come out with you can cast as if you were using a bait caster and never touch the line except to cast just draw back at 12:00 let it go about 1/4 after and you are their !!!!!

    I'm finally giving baitcaster a chance and I have to say, I'm really enjoying the mechanics of it. Once you get the hang of it, it feels so much more smoother to operate and pleasure to fish with. Of course, when the weather is not good, I use the spinning reel as it can be cast against wind and easier for certain techniques.

      I used to use a spinning but i like challanging my self and due to my adhd tendencys, i like fine tuning the reels and practicing with them, slowly easying of the settings and getting closer to that free spool state. Casting far with one feels so satisfiying. I also would like to mention i dont live super close to a lake but i love fishing so if i am really in a fishing mood i can take a bait caster into the back yard and just practice casting. Since you can't be careless while casting them it forces me to pay attention and focus on not birds nesting. Due to the adhd, fiddling with things is something i am always doing and just using the baitcaster can be fun for me as it is something i can work at getting better with.
      I do use both reels though, the bait caster is just more fun for me. I switch to spinner when i'm in the mood to not think about anything and just chill.

    Even the small bait casters have a powerful retrieve. Spinning reels require less concentration on equipment during the cast.
    I like the powerful retrieve of a baitcaster, but I can concentrate on bait placement / action easier using a spinning reel. I have 2 bait casters and 2 spinning rigs. I use the spinning rigs more often.

      Closing the bail by cranking will typically cause line twist. If the bail is not flipped back into the same position it was in when you flipped it out, then it will start winding the line onto the spool differently than how it came off.

    • @robertbrandywine
      @robertbrandywine 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Pennst44 The bail on a spinning reel is not really necessary. Its only purpose is to take the line off the line roller and then to put it back on. You can perform both those functions by hand -- in fact, there are bail-less spinning reels. I don't buy the argument that today's reels will be damaged by letting the bail close manually, though, and reels are inexpensive anyway, and parts are readily available too.

    Another great video Joshua. I use both bait cast and spinning reels. I prefer bait cast reels when I need more accuracy when fishing around docks or shoreline cover. Using the thumb to control distance is much better. I use spinning when accuracy isn't as critical, for example when fan casting a flat and searching for fish. As you mentioned, you can cast much further with a spinning reel than a bait cast allowing you to cover more water.

But I loved the baitcaster so much I just ordered a left hand retrieve reel. It just feels much more natural. Think it's just from growing up with spinning reels. And I know alot of guys reel with their dominant hand but I don't like working the lures and setting the hook with my off hand.

    correct me if im wrong, but regarding baitcasters, what i dont like is that you have to adjust the spool tension almost every time you change a lure of a different weight, and maybe that (and rod specs) is why bass anglers carry a lot of outfits in their boats?
    and with spinners, the line twist is not an issue when using braid since it absorbs most of it, but if you are over spooled, you get wind knots.. and with mono, you wont get wind knots but youll get a lot of line twist

    • @Saltyscales
      @Saltyscales  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You should adjust it but you really don;t have to once you get familiar with the reel. I make minute adjustments but yes, that is one of the reasons bass fisherman have so many rods, that and the type of fishing they are doing.

    • @joshOfive
      @joshOfive 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      once you use a baitcaster for long enough adjusting the tension knob takes seconds and is not the reason people have a lot of combos. the reason for having so many combos depends on the fishing your doing (mainly bass anglers) if im using a crank bait id like a reel with a 5:3:1 gear ratio 12lb floro and a longer 7'2 Medium Heavy rod. but trying to use the setup i listed above for frog fishing wouldn't work. when i frog fish the setup i would use is (7'6 Extra Heavy, 7:1:1 gear ratio, and 65lb braid) its not that they dont like adjusting the reel every time, its that each setup has a specific job. if you have any questions feel free to DM me.

    I hate to say this because I truly love the baitcaster and have used it for years but looking at it pros and cons I find very little benefit of it over a spinning reel.
    I've been using them for about 4 years and only learned how to use them due to seeing friends and family use them and have trouble with them.
    I enjoy all aspects of fishing and I took it as a challenge to learn how to properly use the reel.
    I would say the main benefit of the baitcaster is the ability to thumb the spool mid flight for those perfect shots.
    However I can do this exact same thing with a spinning reel I have no problem putting hand slightly over the spool on a cast to land it where I want it to (with accuracy).
    On top of that I'm good at just chucking it to where I want it to land on the fall by itself.
    I may get one birds nest every 6 hours of fishing and still to this day have never had a serious birds nest. In fact the worst birds nest I've ever gotten was when re-spooling the real because I failed to properly tighten my bread line on the spool causing it to free spin while reeling under load.
    I love fishing as I enjoy challenges I was primarily a live bait fishermen as a kid but moved away from using my tried and true fishing techniques because I felt anyone could get bites with live baits therefore it was no challenge so I taught myself how to fish on the same level as people who use live bait and out fish them in some cases.
    I've had days where my friends would bring a bucket of shiners and a thing of worms maybe catch one bass and a few bluegills while I'm getting a bass every few casts.
    I see fishing as a sport and I take pride in that so please don't take it as offense when I say the baitcaster has little positives. Everything the bait caster can do a spinning reel can as well.
    The spinning reel offers better range at all line sizes. You can easily skip with it (and while this can be done well on a baitcaster its more of an advanced skill technique).
    The spinner can be cast against the wind will little worry or trouble as well.
    Don't get me wrong I own 3 bait casters and I love them but for finesse you can't beat a light lined spinner.
    I use my baitcasters for heavy line (not because they offer any benefits) but they do not suffer much disadvantage.
    I believe fishing is a skill, I do not fish to see which lures or combos work best because at the heart I believe it is the fishermen's skills that make the most difference.

    Spinning reels are also cheaper. A $30 spinning reel is totally sufficient and will perform just fine and will catch just as much fish as a $200 reel. A cheap baitcaster on the other hand, will just give you backlashes, poor casting distance, and a non pleasurable fishing experience.

      For beginners if they want to try, I suggest to buy reasonable expensive bait caster like Abu Garcia, Shimano. For spinning reel they can start with the cheap one. Otherwise beginners with cheap bait caster is a recipe of smashing fishing rods. I have seen plenty of times kids breaking the rods and dumping bait caster in the river. It’s not fun at all to have bird ness and adjusting the reel especially for the beginners.

    Good information! I personally grew up with and therefore prefer spinning reel. For better than a decade I used a diawa millionaire bait caster but ONLY with live or cut bait: the key being HEAVIER so it was simple. Now I’m interested in throwing all the light stuff with a bait caster as efficiently as a spinning. When I fish a spinning (or 2 or 3) setup will always be mandatory. I’ll set that backlash shit down and keep fishing! Lol Thank you

    I started with spinning reels and bought a cheap 40 dollar baitcaster. It wasnt too hard to use but I kept going back to the spinning reel. Then I started buying 80, 100, and 200 dollar bait casters and now I'm hooked. You really cant decide you dont like bait casters until you practice on a higher quality one. Now I'm using a dc reel and it is the best thing ever.

    For the past few years I used a Zebco 33 Black and didn't have any real issues but decided to get a baitcaster and went with the Lew's Mach II combo with 12# Stren mono which I absolutely love and have enjoyed the struggle of learning how to cast without bird nesting but after watching this video, I believe I could use a Lew's American Hero spinning combo with a 6-8# line on it for certain situations where the baitcaster may be a little more difficult.
    I really appreciate this video and have subscribed to your channel now. I'll watch the "How to tune your baitcaster" video next and see if what I've been correlates with your advice.

    2:15 I’ve never considered that one of the most important points for using a spinning reel over a baitcaster is hearing the adrenaline-inducing drag being pulled from a spinning reel. It’s probably because I make a buzzing sound effect when using my baitcaster.

  • @reubensolly2237
    @reubensolly2237 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    (If you cast with your right hand) You can actually “feather” the line on a spinning reel by lightly touching the lip of the spool with just the first finger on your casting hand while the lure is in the air. The line will squeeze between the lip of the spool and your first finger and then you simply vary the pressure.

    • @ericl2969
      @ericl2969 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's good advice, and I would add that if that feels a little awkward (I have small hands and with larger reels it's not easy for me to do what you describe and still have good control), you can use the fingers of your free hand, instead. Also, my older reels spooled the line in the opposite direction of what new reels do, but even in that case the method you describe works fine for a right-hander. That means that your method will work on modern reels for left-handed casters too, even though intuitively you might not expect that.

      Several things can determine. Someone might say normally to use your spinning rod for more finesse techniques, but I can say if you shore fish, there's always a location it's easier to cast one than the other. For example you may be better casting a baitcaster (since you normally cast them sidearm) if you shore fish with trees with low hanging branches. Meanwhile, if you are shore fishing on a downward slope, it's possible your bait may hit the ground casting sidearm. All sorts of different scenarios like that I've ran into.

    Hey Joshua ,Great content but you missed a big plus for bait-casters , the ability to go freespool anytime and reengage really quickly,We fish here from the shore into sharp rocks for GT, Groupers Mangrove snappers etc, they would cut you off in an instance by running through the rocks, we just put the baitcaster on free spool as soon as we feel the "line rub" and re-engage when we have a better angle / no line rub
    This technique has now allowed us to land bigger fish which we used to consider impossible to land when we used to use spinning gear.
