Microcosm + Digitakt is a DREAM - MIDI Mapping, Modulation, & Routing Tutorial

  • The Hologram Microcosm makes a stellar effects engine for the Elektron Digitakt. Each device fulfills needs the other has, and the resulting sum is greater than its parts. In this video I discuss MIDI mapping the Microcosm's parameters to the Digitakt's 8 MIDI channels and using LFOs to add motion and randomization. Also, I talk about my somewhat strange signal chain.
    Shout out to Hologram for sending the Microcosm for me to try. You can find them (and the manual) at: www.hologramelectronics.com/m...

    To be honest your digitakt tutorials are some of the best on youtube. Would love to see how you're working with it in the 1.30 update and if you've found any new tricks with the extra LFO.

      It can really do A LOT and was slightly overwhelming at first, although I'm not super familiar with sampler/looper pedals. Having 16 memory slots that you can either use to save samples or effect profiles to is really handy. Everything that you play through it just sounds super clear and not overly processed. Being able to infinitely add layers and over-dubs to what's looping and then have the option to undo the last thing you added if your off-time or don't like the sound is incredibly useful.
      There's options to add an expression pedal if you want, to easily manipulate any of the control knobs with your foot. Personally I've mostly been using it with my keyboards on electronic music, but honestly it'll make just about anything that you put through it sound good. It's also a pedal that can be updated through firmware downloads from Hologram. The build quality is very nice, everything is solid and feels like it should last through many years and quite a bit of abuse if need be.
      I only have a couple complaints and their not major. 1) I understand why it needs to be plugged in, but having the option to use batteries or to recharge it would have been nice. 2) The lights on the face are too bright in my opinion. They're borderline distracting in a low light setting, to me at least. I couldn't find any option to dim them. Maybe it'll be addressed in an update, but for now I had to find some dark tape to cover the middle display. I can still see what I need to, but it's not so bright. 3) The main display can easily show many different colors, you'll see them when you scroll through the user memory files. Unfortunately, the main sound profiles and presets all use the exact same orange color. It would have been nice to have them different colors if you wanted, or to mark your favorite presets with a different color. You may get lost searching for that sound or effect that you wanted again. Nothing deal breaking by any means though.
      Congrats on getting yours! This pedal has easily replaced two of my older pedals and now I don't need to get a sampler/looper. Post an update if you remember down the road and tell me how you're liking your Microcosm. Well worth the purchase if you ask me. Cheers!

      @@feintcircles awesome little review. Thank you for taking the time.
      Mine will be used almost exclusively with guitar. And in my case an effect like this is almost totally new ground for me. I'm anxious to take a crack at it.
      I'll try and remember to come back and update after I had it for a few weeks.
      Do you use a midi controller with it? I almost feel like it's something I'd really need to fully utilize this pedal...not required obviously but a nice addition to

    • @feintcircles
      @feintcircles 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MrKadidle51 I don't use midi controller though I can see how it would be useful. There's lots of ways to play with the sounds. This pedal could easily help someone start a "1-man-band" project. Especially if you have it at the end of your pedal board. You could easily loop drums and bass lines and improvise guitar over the top of it. There's just so many possibilities.
      One of my favorite features is to use the knob to make the output a 100% 'wet' signal, meaning you don't actually hear the strings being plucked only the modified sound as it gets manipulated through the pedal. I've made some really interesting sounds through that.
      You'll just have to experiment, it's a super fun box with lots of potential will probably inspire some of your future music writing.

    Looks and sounds like a perfect pair! I got a trick for you for the start thing on the Digitakt. I was working with some external gear from the Digitakt (Korg Monologue) and a play wouldn’t kick it off. Even double stop from Digitakt and play didn’t work. When I pressed the midi track, like you did, it started. I needed it to start immediately so my solution was a trigless trig on 1st step, change something or leave it. Boom off it goes.

      I was thinking about this as well. It looks like:
      Mixer > speakers/headphones

      I have these both and the panning between tracks to send different DT outputs is very cool idea.

    Hi, Thanks for the video, it inspired the following question - why delegate a whole track per parameter instead of keeping all parameters controlled from the same track, but with corresponding data entry knobs? I ask with all due respect, just in case there is a performance efficiency I could learn from in your kind response. Thanks!

    • @prezellthomas6065
      @prezellthomas6065 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Ahhh..I think one reason could be that its because there's only 1 LFO per track. So if automated animation is required, then it has to be 1 track on Digitakt per parameter on Microcosm ;-)

    Im curious as to why you didn’t just midi map all the parameters of the microcosm to just say midi track 9. Aren’t there 8 knobs there and 8 knobs on the digitakt? Am I missing something with putting each parameter on a separate midi track?
    Thanks, great tutorial.

    • @Hakucho64

    • @vinylarchaeologist

      @@Hakucho64Because like that you get 2 LFOs per CC (instead of 2 LFOs in total), plus the sequencer can be used for CC automation without complicated parameter locking.

    Showing what can be done with two devices (at breakneck speeds), without any detailed information as to how to do any of it, hardly deserves to be called a tutorial. Imagine taking a history class for the WWII period where the instructor gives an 18-minute lecture listing the countries Hitler seized; in addition, they add a few videos of only tank battles without discussing how the battles took place. For those that know much about WWII's battles would get the overall concept of the short lecture, but those new to WWII would walk away with barely a concept.
    Considering most of the comments below are from people that already know how to do most everything you talked about (aside from not knowing it could be done), I really don't see who this 'tutorial' is meant for. Out of the 10 or so comments i read, not one is from an absolute beginner (which is who tutorials are for). It's more like a video of you boasting about a small example on how you use the two pieces. I don't mind if it's meant for an advanced user, but at least you could state as much in the title, thus saving a lot of time for the beginner. Going through eight videos, that do as you have done with this video, becomes a bit of a pain in the ass while trying to find a real tutorial. Being a professor myself, that knows a bit about pedagogy, it's becoming a bit silly how the quickly growing number of 'How-to/tutorial' videos posted on YT, that describe nothing (with little to no instruction) only show someone playing music or showing a brief example of how the hardware in the video sounds. All one has to do is take a look at all the "Music Theory in 10 Minute" videos to see how sad things are becoming regarding the fear of making something (videos) too long.
    Some real detailed tutorials, for the beginner looking to get a grasp of electronic instruments, would be greatly appreciated.
