This is an old video, i realise, but uhh, you wana hammer the CV shaft before removing the lower balljoint. It should be able to move about 5mm in and out, and theres no danger of pulling a joint appart that way. Also, the ball end of the hammer would be better... sometimes they are very stubborn, and wont come out with out some extreme hammering. Less likely to mess up threads with the ball end. Thank you for the video, it served it's purpose for me :)
I love the idea you didn't have to remove the steering knuckle to replace that lower ball joint, I've seen other vids on TH-cam where they remove the whole steering knuckle to do the job, unnecessarily your method saves time I got to do ball joints on my 03 Honda Element this will definitely help me
That only happens with the OEM's from back-in-the-day, when (thanks to no snap ring or bad install) the ball joint would pop up out of the knuckle and destroy the clamp on the cv axle. When that happens, the bolt gets frozen like granite. It took me hours of peneteting oil, hammering with a pickle fork and eventually a ball joint separator and my neighbor's hydraulic impact wrench to get it out of the lower bracket..I don't have a lift, so I didn't have enough room to fit my press in. It wouldn't press straight from above, then hit the ground when I was ready to put my new one in. Genuine pain in the @#$%!
When ever I'm trying to figure out what maybe needing to be fix on my Honda Element, I come here to check to see how to do the work and if I am able to do the work myself. Thank you Sue for all the work you showed in the video. It's too bad 1A Auto does not have a service that would also rent you out to do the work after we order the parts. I hv spent thousands on repairs in diffrent shows do to the fact that I'm simply not strong enough to do the job. What frustrates me is the jobs are not done correctly and there is always something else seeming to need to be repaired. Yes parts get old but really, 80 thousand miles and I'm told I hv to replace for the second time the front struts again? I've given up on finding an honest mechanic shop. Seeing Sue working on the repairs also tells me how much I've been grossly over charged for the work stated they did. 😡 I sure admire that Sue and all her knowledge. Thank u again for the videos. 👍🏽
Great instructional video! Wish this would have been the first video I watched, instead of the last - regarding my Honda Element ball joint replacement. Going forward, I'll be searching for Sue's 1A Auto videos.
Great video. I just received my rear brake kit for my 08 Honda Element from your company. I use a lot of parts suppliers, local and on line. I have to say that all the parts I receive from 1A Auto are of extremely good quality. We will be back. Thanks for the great parts !!!
Excellent as always. For us DIY's without air compressor, this seems like it may be impossible to do. Not to mention the specialty tools required for this.
Thank you for the great reply. We love to empower our customers by showing you how-to perform your own auto repairs while installing our high quality auto parts. Have a great day! 1aauto.com +Ricky P.
I like how they replaced the whole fronted prior to instructional video. Makes it quick and ez. I need to see tricks when dealing with a rusted well worn front end.
Hello, how do you recommend I remove the lower ball joint if I don’t have your air hammer tool? I can’t find a press set made for a 2008 Honda Accord. Thanks!
She makes it look so easy. I am trying to remove my CRV lower ball joint but it will not come out of the control arm.. I’ve tried, a fork, a ball joint spreader, pressure from another jack. I used heat applied and penetrating oil with no results. I haven’t use a bfh because the factory manual says not to hammer the Control arm. If I can’t get it out I hope I don’t have to get another control arm and a knuckle.
Great video. Except there was some confusion on my part installing the new ball joint. They sell lots of different ball joint installation tools. I rented mine from autozone but had a hard time setting it up to press it in. I really didnt want to mess it up.
You’re wrong about the axle nut. The factory absolutely crimps it in those two places. It’s to ensure that the nut doesn’t back out. You should absolutely re crimp it after installation too.
I've been beating on the LCM for two days and it will not separate from the ball joint. What am I doing wrong? It's all factory. I did everything in this video and looked around for other advice. I just can't get it.
I would only suggest that pulling upward with your back is a bad Idea for taking lug nuts off or hub bolt or anything for that matter. I pulled my back bad one time, long time ago.. I suggest pushing downward instead and use body weight. Everything else, very helpful! Thanks
Try not to hit the axle end with a hammer you can ruin the threads instead reinstall the axle but up to the threads and wack away. She could have used the air hammer 🤷🏻♂️
I thought that too. A rubber mallet works well, but if all you have is a metal hammer, just put a block of wood on it and smack that with the hammer. Then, if you have only a hammer and no wood...just put the nut on backwards, at least it gives you a bigger surface to hit.
I bought one both ball joints from 1A auto and they lasted 8 months. I dont even think they were grease and have no port hole to put more grease in there. They replaced them but i have a feeling it just gonna happen again.
why my ball joint i had to put it from bottom up, so i could not push it with that tool?? So, i could not push it down like that, instead push up so i had to push it up putting pressure on the stud of the ball joint
My ball joints did not come out with an air hammer.. I only wound up mushrooming them. Had to remove knuckle, angle grind off the spindle enough so that I could put a pitman on there and impact that sucker out. Neat trick if it works, though.
If you have a ball joint press then there shouldn’t be the need for the air hammer. Air hammers can be a great tool to get you out of jams but can also cause a lot of damage that will result and more work than needed.
WARNING. My ball joint would not seperate. Hit it with the pickle fork, then a ball joint seperator. Decided to saw it off, but in order to replace the ball joint you need to knock out the axle shaft from the hub which for me was impossible. In the video the lady hits it with a hammer and it pops right out. In real life that's not how it worked. Anywho, just be wary that this stuff is not as easy as it seems. Sucks. My El has become a piece of junk for the time being.
Not 100% clear tightening brake knuckle after tire on?? Had to remove the lower control arm with ball joint on the brake knuckle using press rigged up with a small socket over the caster nut (even bent at angle not screwed on enough) the socket had a round end that mated well with the Cheap Harbor freight C clamp that would never again attempt to remove other bushings bending Clamp on precious job.
True! But with the right tools this doesn’t take very long even if you got some rust. Worst case scenario you can replace the entire arm control to save time.
Question please, if you have clunking on a wheel on bumps, how can you tell if it's the ball joint or links that have to be replaced? (of course without lifting it up and inspecting it) Thank you.
Change your stabilizer end links first they are easy. Cut them off with a saw zaw. Then reach inside and grab aholf of ur inner ti rod. U shoulf feel it thru ur hands

Air hammer worked wonders. Wow this is such a smooth install. Looked like 0 frustration lol unlike me when I use hand tools at home haha
I have to do this every few years and I always come here and watch Sue do it first If I forgot a step.
Excellent video. Order the ball joints and sway bar links through the link on the site and will give this a go over the weekend. Thank you!
So glad I watched your video. That air chisel made it so easy. Thank you.

so we gonna ignore that spider when she was using the pickle fork? Had me hitting my screen!
I did see that too. Had to rewind just to make sure. LOL
Haha 😂
Wow she is good. Wish she was the one putting mine on right now. Yep what's having to be replaced on my element right now just hope he does good job.

❤good work as Diy can borrow tool when u buy a ball joint at the shop.

Yeah brand new control arm
Great video as always. Your videos are the best on TH-cam. Thank you.
Hello, how do you recommend I remove the lower ball joint if I don’t have your air hammer tool? I can’t find a press set made for a 2008 Honda Accord. Thanks!
At the end of the video you was talking about tightening the strut mount on top. When did you losen them up and why did you ?
Wondered the same thing.
Awesome video by an awesome mechanic! The only thing they forgot to show was the pinching of the new axle nut.
+Joe K Thanks for the feedback! We'll pass this info along to our production team.

Why is the cotter pin hole so much lower than the castle nut on the 1a auto ball joint
Great video. Except there was some confusion on my part installing the new ball joint. They sell lots of different ball joint installation tools. I rented mine from autozone but had a hard time setting it up to press it in. I really didnt want to mess it up.
So I just need a compressor a lift an air hammer a ball joint tool and a pickle fork. Well I got a pickle fork anyway🤣
I like your demonstrated & I love Thank you
Great job
Gotta do both sides A arms and anti sway links included I’m fortunate to have a great friend with a garage and lift. Easy peasy.
thank uou for clearing the snap ring on original Honda part, not all ball joint need snap ring

For anyone who is really new at this may be a little bit of mention of the PB Blaster or kroil that you used to loosen everything up.
@riikerman Everyone has their favorite...for me it's probably between PB Blaster and WD-40 Penetrating lubricant.
Where does she get those wonderful toys?
You’re wrong about the axle nut. The factory absolutely crimps it in those two places. It’s to ensure that the nut doesn’t back out. You should absolutely re crimp it after installation too.
Wow every time I have to remove those links it’s a pain ,always have to cut them off
I've been beating on the LCM for two days and it will not separate from the ball joint. What am I doing wrong? It's all factory. I did everything in this video and looked around for other advice. I just can't get it.
+B Kipp Have you given it a tap with a hammer? Tried using PB blaster?
I don’t understand how the cotter pin is supposed to keep the star nut from turning if it doesn’t go through one of the cutouts of the star nut.
Very nice!thank you!
+THE HOTWHEEL MOM Thank you!
I want her to be my official mechanic for my Honda Element!

When I go to reinstall the castle nut, it turns the ball joint stud. Wondering how you were able to torque to 51 lbs.

What manufacturer and model number was the air chisel you used?
How do you know when ball joint is bad?
"..any other paht for her cah.." You sound like my brother. 😊
Do this method works on a honda crv 2002.

You should have had someone pressing the brakes instead.
You can damage the stud threads doing it like this.
What size axel nut?
Women fear her. Men simp for her.
why my ball joint i had to put it from bottom up, so i could not push it with that tool?? So, i could not push it down like that, instead push up so i had to push it up putting pressure on the stud of the ball joint
How long is the 14mm wrench? My dad is asking bec he couldn’t find that long any where. Thanks! Pls answer.
+Camron G I am sorry we do not have the length of the socket on hand.

Half way through and there hasn’t been a single nut size correct I. The video so far😂
wow
I caught pure t hell trying to line the ball joint back into lower control arm
Excellent mamita.mon
Do you need an alignment after this?
No, an alignment is not necessary after the replacement of your ball joints. +Robert
I was thinking of replacing the ball joints before selling my Element, NOPE! Lol I'll just know the price
