Poor Gevherhan Sultana. First her brother had her husband executed, then her younger sister stole her beloved. She was just a victim of her siblings' selfishness. What place did women, even those who were royalty have in that world?
YES! Ibrahim and Silahtar said it loud and clear! Atike and her pride lead her to live a miserable and lonely life. Ibrahim knowing his twin sister's true nature, and Silahtar knowing that too & calling his arranged marriage to Atike a "punishment" silenced Atike. She's lost.
The transition when Murad stepped aside to let Silahtar carrying the coffin of Gevherhan is such a heartbreaking scenes. From the sadness of a brother who mistreated his sister, to the heartbroken man who lost his lover forever. Gevherhan's death make all of them realized that everything have gone too much which they not even aware of it. They sacrificed someone else's happiness to made another one happier.. The series is amazing, but one of the things it seems that never gets mentioned is the COSTUME department of this series should be winning awards left, right and down the middle. Actors, great. Story, amazing. (Thank all that is holy for subtitles, haven't watched an English show for a few years and now Magnificent century has me in a chokehold even if it DOES make working on something that I have to keep looking down for tough.) But the costumes. I'm a seamstress and I desperately want to send the person who designed all this flowers. And possibly beg to peek into the wardrobes for the show. Tiny details, millions of them, each little stitch and fold just amazing. And that's long before we get to the brilliant minds who work on the jewelry. Just a couple hours, I just want to beg for a few hours in the wardrobe department. I'll make everyone lunch. Heck, for a chance at a few extra days I'll clean their houses and walk their dogs. Just wonderful. Does anyone know if they are going to release an art book by ANY chance of the series? Or who I can petition they make one? Possibly patterns....
I agree with you-the costumes are gorgeous, but they have nothing to do with the real costumes that were worn at that time. We toured Topkapi Palace and saw the real costumes with our own eyes-they are big shapeless caftans, very oversided, both for women and men there was nothing form fiting-there were layers upon layers of large sack like clothes, and women were also completely covered from head to toe, and they could not be out with their faces and heads uncovered, left alone chests
@@JuliaSochnikova Almost all of the dresses of the Ottoman female sultans have disappeared. When the Ottomans started to dress like western monarchs with the Tanzimat, most of these dresses were either sold or destroyed. The reason why the dresses were bulky and big is that there was a heating problem in the Topkapi Palace. The palace surrounded by stones would be cold in the winter and even in the summer. Have you ever thought about whether a person could walk in that huge thing? These dresses were worn by the sultans while spending time in the palace. Unfortunately, many of the sultans' belongings were lost. They even had to sell most of their jewelry in the 20th century. Also, I did not understand what you said about women covering themselves. 90 percent of the movie takes place in the palace. The women in the palace have special dresses. In the harem, if you had money, you could order special fabrics from Venice or India. Everyone had a tradition of dressing according to their own class and financial situation. You said they covered their faces, yes, in the movie, when Farya Sultan goes out with Murat, she walks with her face covered. Ottoman women wear the same wide caftans that we call 3 skirts, which are in this movie but the bottom cuts are different and have a low-cut chest. It should not be forgotten that the only purpose of these women is to make the sultan like them. This also goes beyond the body. The only thing that is not realistic in this movie is the crowns. Ottoman women start wearing these crowns with the Tanzimat. The dress and the others are not much different from real history.
I loved the heartful moment between Murad and Silahtar.
