  • Lauri Markkanen's Remarkable Transformation to Most Improved Player!
Lauri Markkanen is a seriously underrated talent… Here’s a guy who this season had a higher field goal percentage than Luka Doncic, makes more threes a game than James Harden, averages more points than Jokic but, just a few years ago, was a benchwarmer in Chicago. And it’s not like these are unusual numbers. The seven foot Finn, burst onto the scene back in 2017, breaking records, dazzling defenses and scoring at will with a silky smooth jumpshot. But while today, Markkanen is the first Nordic All-Star in NBA history and winner of the Most Improved Player award, his time in the league hasn't always been so fruitful. But to really understand how a 7-footer who averages more threes than LeBron and AD combined was once benched and traded on a free agency, we need to take a good look at the evolution of Lauri Markenan…
In today's video we look at Lauri Markkanen's Remarkable Transformation to Most Improved Player!

@@Hoops_Centralbut please check your sources. I know getting factual information about Laurie's time in Finland might be tough, but at least get his NBA timeline right. Hoiberg coached the first season and a half, then Boylen until the end of his third year. Fourth and last year under Donovan. Vuc trade happened at the trade deadline in his third year.

Apologies to Lauri for thinking Sexton would be the best player to come out of that Cleveland trade. Just goes to show how deserving of the MIP award he is! He’s now 95% of what Spida is. The picks and players are just icing on the top from that trade

Markkanen is better than Mitchell, Mitchell is a volume shooter. Markkanen lets the game come to him, and is 7 feet tall. The Cavs would have ended up in the same spot this year if they never made the trade. Altman is the worst GM in the league. Got straight up fleeced.

And actually one of the things what happened in Chicago was coaching and playstyle. They wanted Lauri to be big and strong. So they put him into the gym and yes he got muscles but got slower. That also made him injury-prone. Finnish people are mostly taught to be unselfish and humble. Chicago was not playing team oriented basketball and unselfish players don't shine.
Later in the summer Lauri went to Finland and hired a talented PT to help him. Lauri told him that he wants to be faster, more explosive and stay healthy. That suits more in his playing style and we all saw that was working!

Still think SGA deserved most improved player. The guy wasn't even an allstar in the 2021-2022 season. Then last season he became first team all NBA and actually placed fifth in MVP voting. Also he became the third guard in NBA history after Jordan and Curry to average over 30ppg on over 50% shooting. I know he averaged 24ppg the season before but the leap from non allstar to first team all NBA is a huge one.

Well, Lauri went from trade salary filler to All-Star... That is quite a ways taller order than going from borderline star to star. There is only so much space on those all nba teams, that some deserving players get left off every year. It is highly unlikely to bounce back like Lauri did. His trajectory was pretty much out of the league or an end of the bench player after his current contract before the Jazz trade and now he has like the most team friendly deal in the entire league (not counting rookie contracts of course). He is making 17 million... He should be making like 37 based on his production or even more. Looking at the 43 million a year Van Vleet deal just signed in the last week or so. Or the 20 a year deal for Dillon Brooks... Lauri is cheaper than Brooks. Man that's a good deal for the team. And Lauri is playing the big guy role like Steph Curry is playing the guard role... Constant motion and he is making things happen all over the court for himself or others with constant motion. Lauri is like the perfect team mate for any ball dominant player.
