So, it looks like they have fixed ND filters ready to go already.🤓🙌 Here’s a link: bit.ly/36Xoh1f
You can get from 1 to 8 stops of fixed ND. Nice! Now we just need those circular diffusers!

Was really unimpressed with the PolarPro Peter McKinnon VNDs. They had an uneven colour cast across the frame, with the right side of the frame skewing heavy towards cyan. You can't just do a custom white balance to corect, as it only affects half the frame and you'd then throw out the other side of the image.

How did Polar Pro manage to take something I hate using and make it more than tolerable? I swear they have a ninja note taker at everyone's projects and it reports to some robot at HQ.
Sponsored and legit vid. Undone right. Thanks Gerald.

Hi, Gerald. Do you have any experience with the Aputure DEC Vari-ND or the DEC LensRegain? I'd LOVE to hear your opinion on them.
      If you're unfamiliar:
Aputure DEC Vari-ND is an EF to MFT adapter (not boosted) + wireless follow focus + 9 stop variable ND,
Aputure DEC LensRegain is an EF to MFT speedbooster + wireless follow focus.

Gerald as a filmmaker with aspergers and a touch of OCD, the thoroughness of your videos is the most satisfying thing. Really preciate' ya! MKBHD became the top and most trusted tech channel on YT, and I think you will become the top filmmaker gear review channel in no time. The most trusted, comprehensive, nothing left to be desired, the kind of reviews that make you go "i dont need to listen to anyone else". I am always astonished at the amount of work and care you put in to things!

You are good damn right! :) Every time I need to buy some new piece of film making kit (ND, tripod, lens, lights...) I go to Geralds channel and buy what he tells me to buy. And I was never been disappointed. I am very indecisive and he is bringing me peace of mind that I just made a good choice :) Except for Gerald and Marques, I need somebody for sports gear and maybe live choices and I will be happy :D

My guy, you are the most upfront, transparent guy talking camera gear on TH-cam; not a knock against anyone else, but you're the only person I've seen talk about how they actually make money from product videos in relation to their testing. There's nothing I respect more than using your integrity to guide your wallet and not vice versa. I trust your opinion more than anyone else's, and you're my go to source of "nerd calibre" info for finding the proper information on purchases. I buy my gear based first on specs, followed then physical layout, and you offer completely unbiased, science based arguments of why certain formats, sensor sizes and methods of capture are more appropriate in different situations. It's actually provided me with a competitive edge when it comes to overhead and pricing in my market. BlackMagic, SmallRig, Panasonic and Sigma owe you some commission from me.
So, from a fella working out in Western Canada, thanks a ton, sincerely. I'll be buying hella merch when I'm in the money. You're doing God's work, or at least Ansel Adams'.

For those who are interested: I just received my Mattebox and I can confirm that you can screw the Mattebox mount onto the Tiffen Black Promist Filter provided you got the 77mm or 82mm edition. This seems to be a decent workaround until Polar Pro releases their own Diffusion Filters.

I just got the Summit in the mail and will give it a try shortly. Upon initial inspection, the build quality seems spot on and I like being able to apply CP with other filters easily. My only complaint is, LOL, the carry case. I wish it had a tad more room to store everything Summit related in one place and a way to attach it to a camera bag.

That's my concern too. If you need to switch products you have to buy all of your ND's again. Better to find one that can fit industry standard 4x5.6 ND's with empty filter trays you can leave on your glass. That way you don't keep touching the glass itself as you slide it in and out.

I like good packaging as much as the next guy, but I'd actually like to see reviewers starting to praise more efficient packaging. With that I mean, uglier easily recyclable packaging that is not only better for the environment, as it would be cheaper to produce, so that the manufacturer can lower the overall product price.
Yeah, cool boxes are great, but after the unbox you just get a carrying case and the box just stays in the corner somewhere.

I was in the market for a filter system for GNDs and NDs. I tried Cokin and was unimpressed. I was pretty much sold on trying Lee. Then Polar Pro released the Summit System. Their timing was perfect. I was already a huge fan of Polar Pro's variable GNDs, especially for video. Their VNDs are super. 2-5 stop and 6-9 stop. No color shifts or cross-polarization. I was also impressed with their Quartzline CP filter. Again, no color shift. I decided to try the Summit System. I've now bought the complete system. I see some grouching about price. You really do in this case get what you pay for. No color shifts. They work with wide angles down to 16mm. They're made out of quartz glass instead of resin. That was critical for me. I wanted the highest quality glass in front of my lenses. Everything is well-designed. The Summit CP filter sits inside the frame. Everything is tightly sealed to avoid light leaks. I could not be happier with my decision to try the Summit System from Polar Pro.

Recommended by Gerald: ooooo this could be worth getting.
    Proprietary mount: oookay maybe not.
Looks like a great tool, really high quality, but the closed system nature of it is pretty off-putting for the mean time... I'd want to see several generations of this to be reassured that they weren't going to come out with a slightly different mount each time. Definitely will be keeping an eye out for if they introduce a compatibility add-on.

    • @cugan83

      @geraldundone  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I was thinking about that, but since they currently offer a complete range of VND and ND as well as supports and cover every front filter size, they almost don't really need to add anything to the system. Other than that diffusion filter! But once they add that, it might be a closed system, but it's a complete one. So I don't think we're really missing out. Just my two cents.

Thank you for the video. I like fixed ND filters and until I saw your comment below, I was going to hold off. Now I have something to really think about. I like my Lee system, but this is something I am considering for landscapes. I am just pricing it out in my head and thinking long term is it worth purchasing it. If only I was able to use my current filters in this system then the decision would be easier. If I choose to go with it, I may have to run it by my budget director,....I mean my wife. Thanks again. Another quality video which I felt was informative and as usual, I enjoyed it.

  • @KenFlanagan
    @KenFlanagan 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I am a huge fan of your channel and have always seen you as a pragmatist who values the democratisation of good design and affordability. Its surprising that you endorse a brand that seems so overtly aspirational (the packaging alone) and hardly a snip. The principle of proprietary design seems to embody everything that good design isn't. Likewise any brand that feels the need for "signature" versions of plainly functional pieces has to be a concern. Most matte boxes seem ridiculously expensive, and this really seems no exception given its proprietary bent, though I appreciate your take on that. Swing away design as an innovation at least allows quick lens change and it would be great to see similar. Principally universality and standardisation allows costs to come down and if we all want better egalitarian design, then designs/brands like this, though addressing some practical concerns, seem instinctively a step in the wrong direction. Regardless your time, consideration and valued judgment is always sincerely appreciated.

No, I meant for the size and purpose. Because you could make a smaller 4x4 matte box that has fewer features and which can't accommodate as many lens diameters for lighter, but it's not really comparable. But for any regular 4x5.6", 114mm matte box, this is the lightest, I believe.

PolarPro say this on their website regarding the fixed NDs: "Hyper Neutral Through 1100nm Eliminates IR Contamination". From what I've seen, variable NDs seem to be pretty good at reducing IR as the two-polariser method attenuates all wavelengths more or less the same. It's generally much more of a problem with fixed ND.

Thanks for all your great work Gerald, it's massively appreciated. Regarding this product though, $299 per fixed ND is one hefty pricetag, well above even Lee proglass NDs. So could you please shed some light on how Polarpro's CP + VND combo REALLY compares to their CP + fixed NDs? Nothing less than standard Undone rigor would be appreciated to round this review out 😎 as the pricing disparity for the two sides of this product clearly spells out how Polarpro feels about the comparison.

    • @bengordon9589

Just to clarify, I'm referring to the pricing disparity between what appears to be a very reasonable $699 for the Basecamp VND kit and the $299 per fixed ND. Gerald, I wanna know the beahaivor of the reflactions and glares when using the polarized filter to change the exposure... is the polarization of the shot affected when you rotate the pl filter? Or does it only influence in the exposure affectiing the overall density?

What about the lee and nisi filter system?

  • @Rashadmcka

For that price, seems amazing. I am a bit nervous about the propriety filter system tho. With my Bright Tangerine Atom (Orginal) matte box, there is a vignette on wide lenses on full-frame with a Cordvision step-up ring, on the 80mm clamp-on ring . what's the widest lens youve tried? and did you see the edges of the matte box?
Edit: after putting on a 77-82 mm step up ring, I dont think there is a vignette at 24mm. I cant tell for sure, because i dont have the 95 clamp down ring rn, but i faked it to see. so there's that lol.

Gerald, have you compared the Polar Pro Summit to the H&Y Magnetic Filter system? I have mixed feelings. H&Y uses Gorilla Glass III and Schott B270 optical glass for its polarizers. I likely will not hear from Polar Pro until Tuesday, so I have no idea if they use comparable glass nor do I know if either have color issues. Both companies seem to have nicely engineered systems.

i am a bit confused, my lens have 72mm ring, what step up ring should i get, the 72 mm to 77mm or 72 to 82mm?

In the actual kit there is a 77mm and a 82mm "Thread Plate" included, my biggest lens uses 72mm so i could convert all my lenses to either size. Is there a reason to choose one over the other? Of should i just go to the 77mm because the step up rings are smaller/hopefully lighter/better to store, or do i miss out on something if i not go to the biggeer size of 82mm? Thank you very much btw for your indepth videos!

You should compare it to the Arri & bright tangerine line. If one wants to start small but then grow to much bigger shoots it’s almost worth it to get the proper stuff from the start. Finally starting to get my head around what would make for a good matte box and moving away from VND’s. These are probably good for certain people but it’s good to know why and be informed all the way up to the pro stuff like with the FX3, FX6, FX9 series of reviews you did which I liked. Love

Hey Gerald, I had a question about crop factors and their impact on f-number. If I use, say, an M42 lens that is f2.0 widest open, adapted with a dumb adapter to M43 camera, does it now become f4.0 at its widest open aperture? And in this case, a speedbooster's use will give me a f3.0 f number? Thanks.

Thank you for your video. How does Basecamp kit compare to NiSi or H&Y? With all the pieces to be connected, is there any light leaks? Can a grad be inserted on the Basecamp? Which of the two do you recommend?

Can I still somehow use my Tiffen Pro mist filter with this system? I think it's possible if I screw the Tiffen filter on the lens first. & then Everything else from Polarpro since the Tiffen has a filter thread in front. Just looking for someone that can test and confirm. Thanks in advance.

I picked up the PolarPro Summit Filter Kit and I'm a little disappointed by the bags that came with the kit. There is a bag for the core unit with a side pouch for storing the step-up rings. The other filters each come with their own bag. Combine this with separate bags or containers for other variable neutral density filters and a circular polarizing filter... I end up with a collection of bags/containers to keep track of. I picked up the Filter Hive from ThinkTank to help manage it all, but it's not wide enough to hold the 100mm filters because of the tab. I really wish PolarPro offered a solution for this. Any recommendations or ideas for a solution? How do you manage/juggle all of your filters?
