Serbia is very safe. I used to live alone in Belgrade for 6 years. As a female when I was only 19 years old, I felt safe walking around the streets of Belgrade at night, even after the last bus stopped operating. I would go after midnight at Kalemegdan and just admire the beautiful view of the rivers. Good times.

I live in Serbia and I think that there is a greater chance of being struck by lightning than of someone just attacking you on the street.

There are migrants in groups around the main bus station and that is what can visually seem unsafe. It has nothing to do with Serbia and Serbs.
By the way, the bus station is moving to a new location soon. The cashier at MAXY is not rude, but she is overloaded with work.
The southern part of Serbia is less economically developed, but the situation is improving. Good people with warm hearts live there. You will find the best restaurants (kafane) in Serbia right there. In fact, the best part of Serbia in terms of the quality of human qualities and social life is outside Belgrade. I am telling you this as someone who is a native of Belgrade who traveled all over Serbia.

Yeah i live in NB close to where the new bus station will be, excited for it to be up and running. And I know, I never blame Serbians for being cold when working since I know they’re not getting fairly compensated for the job, but it’s a change from the west. And I always look forward to getting out of Belgrade, people are indeed kinder in the smaller towns

@@Isabel-Maria The workers and people on the street are simply not behaving like the westerners do, for simple reasons. In this part of the world, being professional is having a serious outlook and throwing a random comment to a person on the street is seen as awkward or intrusive. Both of these seem cold to a westerner, yet it's just a matter of different mentality.
Meaning, we would feel equally off-put in the West. To engage in mundane smalltalk with complete strangers is seen as fake and/or rude, to have a cashier be overly talkative and too vibrant is seen as unnecessary and fake too, etc. When we engage in talks it's almost always leading to an actual, deeper exchange - basically if some stranger approaches or a worker talks to you they have a specific reason, or intend to have an actual conversation or an give a serious remark, cold or warm.

People in Belgrade do have that attitude, but of you go anywhere else in serbia people are not snobs like here in Belgrade, real gentleman and aristocrats left Belgrade a long time ago, now only peasents live here.

I have noticed one huge difference in this video comparing to video from your biginnings. You are more honest. Just keep going that way because that's what people appreciate the most. Usually foreigners want to be polite and avoid to talk what they really mean. People will instantly recognize if you are avoiding to tell the true and you could leave bad impression even you are nice and polite. If some part of the city is dirty than it's dirty and nobody should say it's clean or if lady from maxi is rude than she is rude. Nobody should say it's nice :) You are totally right about safety. I live currently in Belgium. First association for most of Serbs is that Belgium is safe high develope country but actually criminal is unbeliavable high. Thieves are stealing bags from women in the middle of the day in heart of european union. They stole my visa card from locked locker in gym. It never happend in Serbia. Few weeks ago guy from Tunisia killed swedish tourist and guess what... it turns out that this guy escape from prison in Tunisia to Belgium. They , of course, wanted him back but belgian government refuse to send him back !!!!!!!!! It's similar situation in all bigger european cities. We do not control who is entering in Europe. Similar problem could happend in Serbia unfortunately. We totally do not no identities of people who are gathering next to the bus station in Belgrade. The only countries who work actually on this issue are hungary, slovakia, czech republic and poland.

Serbia is realistically one of the safest countries in the world and generally with a low crime rate.
Of course there are incidents everywhere, migrants are also currently on their way to Western Europe, so this can also pose a kind of danger. But in general, Serbia is a safe place to live and Serbs are very warm and friendly people.
The only drawback is that it belongs to the countries with lower wages and generally lower paying power, but that is also changing for the better in the last few years.
The south of Serbia is much less economically developed, but I would recommend you to visit the other smaller towns, villages or the rich nature and diverse regions that Serbia has to offer.

Greetings Isabel! Have you ever thought that at its core of the good values lays Orthodox religion? I moved to Crna Gora from US after spending 25 years of my life there. When you say people are not as friendly at their work place where in the West they smile. One of my trainers back in the 90’s in the US asked me why am not smiling and I replied I have no reason to smile to which she said to me “ Show them your teeth and they will think you’re smiling”. In Balkan there is a saying only crazy person laughs and smiles for no reason. Serbians are not going to come across or to be politically correct and to a lot westerners that might come across as rude but we all keep saying we want the truth and than when we get it hurts at first but it is liberating. As far as infrastructure goes we got bombed in the 90’s almost back to stone age by the collective West. WW2 in the 40’s and so on and so forth. It’s amazing we are even where we are today after everything we been through as Serbs. The reason our infrastructure is not up date is simple, corruption to the core. You have to bribe your way through everything.

Ok. This is very objective. If I as Serbian can say that.
First of all, I like your calm tone in your voice, it makes me super comfortable watching this video.
You re actually great ambassador for Serbia.
Everything like you mentioned really is that way.
I think that our faith, still present deep in people's hearts, protects us from total decay.
    She teaches us sobriety. Compassion.
Also, I think the west stumbled because of that.
Because of the loss of faith.
You have done us a great service, because this is a great advertisement for us.
Serbia did not have a good reputation for a long time due to the strong propaganda of the Western media in the nineties, but that is coming into its own.
Honestly, I'm glad that we're following the world because we have the opportunity to see how certain influences work on those countries.
Of course, there are exceptions in Serbia as well as everywhere. But in general it is safe.

@luaye1764 Because in NA something like that is unthinkable, while in Serbia is common specially in Fridays and Saturdays. Watch video again, and you will see that there is dangerous in 5PM, in 8PM all people are at home.

You have such nice and calm voice.
The real difference between Serbia and Canada or US is there is still meaning of having a happy family, though our birth rates decliming. But those who gets married tend to work on their issues, and actually most likely stay forever together, rather then easily look for divorce. I am not sure why is that rough in the West tbh when economic is surely way more better then here in Serbia? And yes Serbia is in some things behind Canada and US at least 20 yrs.
I think that women and men should be a team and we need to complement eachother in society, not to compete. And for your gym experience I am not sure it would be welcomed from a lot of women in Canada or US. I don't get it honestly. At least from my view you still can be independent women, take care of yourself, educate, go to work etc. and not feel hate toward opposite sex.

As a natural born Serbian, I have to thank you @Isabel for being objective. The main thing In Serbia is that, compared to North America there are almost 0 crimes on the street, towns are super safe at night, 0 homeless ppl, much less drugs, traditional gender roles, people are white & Christian and many people speak English decently enough for any sort of help.
Wish you a happy stay and enjoy Serbia nature as much as you can.

As a matter of fact there are a few thousand homeless people in Belgrade, but they are not on drugs, generally they do not steal, and do not sleep in tents. They are often beggars, search for food in dumpsters, and in winter sleep and get food in safe houses.

Serbia like much of Europe is quite safe. Its turned into an affordable tourist destination for European travelers. Its civil enough but living there is a nightmare with low wages and general lawlessness in terms of civil law. Its bad enough that half the Serbian population has evacuated to Austria. For example as a foreigner you can forget about living there and expecting you will accomplish anything other than having and adventure of sorts.

Imagine you are so ignorant that you dont know or confuse two countries. In Serbia, we learn in elementary school about other countries and cultures, also we are very aware of what is going on in the world especially because we know how it is when wester media missinform world about you. Serbia in the 1990s was dangerous place, but never been so dangerous like for example NY or LA, Vancouver or any bug city in US or Canada.

Dont believe everything you read on google, wiki etc! I have travelled literally all around western Europe and believe me, some of the countries are third world in comparison to Ex Yugoslavia area! But for some reason, reality is skewed and portrayed in another way! Also, lifestyle, safety and hospitality of people are not even comparable! My advice, go travel and then see for yourself! p.s. One thing tho, people in the Balkans are known for self-criticism, but whoever is well travelled wont emphasise negative things anymore, simply because the benefits are so much more once u have seen other countries which u can compare it with…
