  • Find out all about motor replacement in todays video - where I tear down and diagnose a camera that failed shortly after being delivered to the client.
The client described the issue as having a large lag between pressing the button and the picture being taken. Initially I thought there was a problem with the rubber baffle inside the camera, but this didn't turn out to be the case!
Yup, despite thorough testing, things still occasionally fail! Luckily it didn't take much to bring this little guy back from the dead!
Like what I do? Feel free to buy me a beer (or two!):

Getting artifacts in the video? For best quality, manually select 1080p quality, as depending on your bandwidth, TH-cam may default to 720p - and TH-cam's 720p compression looks like garbage

At 5:31 the text box cuts off. It should end with the paragraph "after taking two photos, the driver chip spontaneously blew up right in front of the camera!"
Sometimes these things are beyond our control :)

love this kind of dedication and workmanship, I try my best to be the same for my Canon rangefinders and at work. I hate everything that's driving us towards less repairability and false ownership.

    Another enjoyable video.
Could you point the direction of the overhead camera slightly more in your sitting direction please.
Very often the bottom of the picture where you are doing the work on the motor is off screen.
Interesting news about your thoughts on the motor speed.
However when you posted the message on screen about another motor ( and a new video to come on it ) being at 20,000 doesn’t that fly against your suggestion that the less than 12,000 motor is better for the longer term well being of the camera ?
If the 14,000 motor is to fast why go to 20,000 revolutions?
Hopefully your new video will explain all !
Hope the new house and workshop is all that you want and keep the videos coming.

Yeah, at the moment my videos are basically whatever I can squeeze out in between client repairs. In the coming weeks I'll head to the hardware store and purchase an extension to lower the camera back the level it was at my old workshop. The issue currently is the camera sits too high, making it harder to keep track of where my hands are.
As for motors, the "14 000" RPM motor - if we are to believe that the original commercial is accurate, actually seems slower than the original. I estimate its more like 10 000 RPM, despite the spec sheet saying its 14 000. (maybe Chinese RPM is different to American RPM lol)
As stated, the slightly slower motor may actually be a good thing in terms of reliability though.
As for the "20 000" RPM motors I've just found... those are quite fun lol. They are certainly faster than the original motor by a little bit. I'm not 100% sure why you would want one, other than they look and sound impressive! And maybe that's reason enough!

      @ thanks for the update.
I fully appreciate what with the move and all your efforts to get the new workshop up and running there is probably more than enough to think about.
However if you want a task - with all your magical skills - you need to create the worlds first SX-70 RPM motor calculator.
Accurate to 1 RPM of course !

@@monochromebluess You know... if I bought the right tool it really wouldnt be that hard to calculate RPM...

Wouldn't it be easier to make 4 round cut-outs on the leather where the screws are to prevent having to peel it off in the future?
