RETRO TECH: POLAROID
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 1 ธ.ค. 2019
- Way before cell phone cameras, we took selfies with Polaroids. I explore how the first Polaroid camera, the Polaroid SX-70, turned us all into amateur photographers and paved the way for our social media-obsessed culture. Fellow TH-cam creator and model Karlie Kloss teams up with me to make photo filters the retro way - with bleach. And Peter Mckinnon stops by to play “Dope or Nope.”

Not to forget, Instagram is so heavily inspired from the Polaroid that IG's original logo was a Polaroid too!
So was IGs first filters... definitely Polaroid inspired

“What are the 8 things you want to remember forever?” That question made me appreciate photography nowadays even more.
@@allnprodd He's referring to how much we rely on photography for our daily lives, we take pictures daily, with the cameras in our pockets smaller than the size of a quarter. We use it to remember, let's be real, could you only have 8 things to ever remember forever? Of course, you'd opt for more.
Same lol
Polaroid was an expensive camera. Even in the 90's I used a 110 "pocket" camera. I forget exactly how many pictures on a cartridge - 14? 16? memory hazy on that. You waited a week to see how many pics looked decent.
@@sonaarr1762 of course not, Algebra has 12 whole postulates, 4 more things than that

Your right
As a Millennial-Xer, I agree

@@danielavelez974 Any particular 3rd party brands that are good ?
@@danielavelez974 there is no such thing as THIRD BRAND Integral Film. It is Polaroid, or it isn't. Hell same thing with Fuji Instax.
Polaroid Film was ALWAYS expensive. always. yet I still have Polaroids 40 years later that look like the day I took them.
@@JerryMilton impossible is third party, but since they bought polaroid it is now a ship of theseus, i would argue it is still not original polaroid film nor chemistry
This series made me want to have a Polaroid so bad
I had one when they were fashionable. I thought it was pretty cool. Wherever you were, at the beach, or a hotel, or wherever you were, after you took the picture, all you had to do was take it, and wait a minute and it would print it out.
I have one but the film are so damn expensiveeeee
Two years later, did you ever get one?
I just bought one :)
I have an SX-70 like the one in this vid and its my baby, I shoot it more then any of my other cameras lol, hope you ended up getting one!

"Has anyone taken a selfie with a Polaroid?"
Mr. BEAN !!!!
I like how everyone is like “DONT SHAKE IT” and the last dude was like “... I was today years old when I learned you don’t shake it”
It previously had to be shaked but not to hard because it had to dry the chemicals on the photo. Nowadays the new poloroid has a protective coating to dry on its own. BTW shaking to hard would cause bubbles in the image.
That's Roy Wood Jr! He's hilarious!
@@trinoromo6619 dude...the whole SKAKE IT is from PEEL APART Polaroid....which is WET after you peel it...it has to DRY. Integral Film ALWAYS had a protective layer, hence shaking never did SQUAT. ever.
actually shaking it does does do something.... it distorts the chemicals and could change the colors / ruin the image.

My grandma was obsessed with photographs. When she passed away this exact camera was the keepsake I took and still have to this day to remember her by. She had about 10 boxes full of nothing but Polaroid photos without frames. Her fridge had no blank spots ever. She held the family together. Photography was apart of making those memories special and gave us a way to reflect. This was state of the art in her day.
Your nan sounds super cool

I wish Polaroid Originals (previously "The Impossible Project", the group/company that resurrected the polaroid film as seen in the video) got a shout out. The original Polaroid company died and Polaroid Originals is a whole different team who got Polaroid back into the modern market.
I have a Polaroid tv
While I agree, it's kinda deceptive how they market it unless you really look into what their doing. The film isn't the same nor the "Polaroid" experience that once was. As a kid I remember taking photos, holding them by the bottom and shaking until they developed 3-5min at max. The newer project says 10-15min for full development, not shaking photos, and keeping them away from light.
The original Polaroid company didn't die, they just stopped making film and they sold their old factories and dismantled the machinery for making the film. The Impossible Project actually included former employees from Polaroid, and a few years ago once they got investors they bought Polaroid so it's all one company again.
@@Bandogphoto thanks for clearing this up!
@will you were never supposed to shake them. That was just Andre 3000 that came up with that out of nowhere. In fact, shaking them can damage the photos.
I was never a fan of Polarouids, I never understood why people liked old bad quality pictures.
But after this video, i can appreciate them. The Physics behind it is pretty dope
Even in the 90s as a kid when you met someone with a Polaroid camera it blew my mind as I was used to mom sending in the film by mail to be developed and you had to wait a week. Little did I know the technology was much older than me yet it felt futuristic even then.
It's so crazy how all of these tech items are in one single device that fits in our pocket.
And incredibly light

I'm jealous that this Polaroid looks so much cooler than the ones of my youth lol.
Agree
14:13 every time they dropped the camera, my heart skipped a beat
Marques and team, this is one of my favourite videos that I've ever seen on TH-cam in 15 years. This was delightful. I didn't expect you to get so hands-on with the tech, and I loved the photography and experimenting you did.
I'm a massive fan of instant cameras, I own three and use them nearly every month. My bedroom wall is covered in Polaroids I've taken of friends, family, and people I knew for one night at a party. I think you've done a great job at capturing what was probably so compelling about this tech back when it was new.
I know the series is Retro Tech, but probably my one criticism of this excellent video is that you didn't mention how prevalent instant photography still is. In fact it's not just had a slight resurgence recently, it's cheaper and easier to get into than it ever has been. It just isn't under the Polaroid brand name (but you can still call it that) - the film is called Fuji Instax, and there are tons of cameras by Fuji and third parties!
Alright, I actually love this series. Mind Field and Retro Tech are certified DOPE
Michael Medrano word.
Truth. Mind Field is what made me subscribe to premium.
Being the photography geek that I am, I'm living for this
Ok so I've been putting off watching this because I've been so excited about it. Counterintuitive I know but I wanted to enjoy this video and that I did! It was excellent. MKB did not disappoint! These still give me the butterflies and gets my blood flowing... the OG of what's become today's cameras and photography 📷 🤳 ❤

I got into Film Photography a few months ago. I love the development process. You get so much control over it. Do you also use an SLR. I use the minolta 3xi.
I'm amazed that they didn't even mention that Polaroid created a camera that uses SONAR for auto-focusing.
Fokkin loved my Polaroid in the 90s, was excited to know that there is still a modern lineage somewhere (as last I'd heard on things was when they died out), totally gonna get one soon
The budget and quality of this are astoundingly better than TV. So nonchalant about having a supermodel in the episode for like 3 minutes.

I’m glad you interviewed Kyle Depew from Brooklyn Film Camera! That shop is singlehandedly doing so much for not only instant photography but film in general!
20:55 pretty sure hear gives any chemical reaction a boost because for a chemical reaction to happen the partials need to rub of one another and heat gives the particals energy and when they go faster there more likely to run against each other idk tho I probably explained it wrong

Heating a substance increases the average kinetic energy of the particles so the frequency of perfect collusion increases which also increases the rate of reaction
