You should cut the whole 1 inch off. Don't try to hold on to dead ends to maintainlength, they will just cause more breakage. Some parts are more split than others.

I love watching trim videos, so relaxing for some reason.
You had to cut so little after not getting a trim for 3 years. If I don't get a trim every 4 - 5 months my hair is a hot tangle mess. What do you do to your hair to prevent split ends?? I don't do anything to my hair. No heat, just leave it in a WnG afro or twist out.
I mostly do stretched styles and not waiting too long in between detangling my hair.

Have you considered going to get a professional trim with quality shears?
Yes I was actually going to go but the ones I was looking at requires a a full service silk press for $300. This is good enough until I find a good salon within budget.

I just did a trim 2 weeks ago but didn't blow dry my hair as it's insanely kinky curly and takes 6+hrs to blow dry in small sections. I stretched it and let it air dry then went in and did the trim. I probably trim more becuz it was very curly
Yeah that’s what I wanted to avoid. It’s so easy to trim off more than expected by underestimating shrinkage.
