  • The last woodgas video I uploaded was three years ago. This video is twofold. The first half is me running the gasifier followed with the discussion with some video of a new build that was a failure that I had tried out two weeks before uploading this video.

    Mike, as always, I'm glad to see you running again. Im a little sad to hear your reasons for not having success with your new setup. After all, the pyrocoil I installed is a stainless 8" diameter chimney pipe. I have not run it yet but I'm hoping I don't have the same issues with bridging. Anyway, thanks for sharing the good and the bad. I've been looking forward to seeing your progress. Be sure to keep us posted on your progress on the gasifiers new home. Joe

    Ok I just read through all of your comments and saw you wandered my question that someone else asked about the blowers use and how it can be turned off if it is hooked up to an engine because the vacuumed preasure the engine creates pumps the gas in. Thanks for the help. Look forward to more.

    Since I've learned of the technology I've always wanted to build my own gasifier. You make it look pretty simple and have really peaked my desire in doing it. I've saved (I think) all your gasifier build videos, in order to a playlist so hopefully I can someday make the time to build one. I'm hoping to one day get off grid and this will really make life more comfortable when I do.

      I've got an inflatable bag system in mind that I could use to store excess syngas. I've also got ideas in my head as to how to compress syngas for use on the go or to decrease the volume needed for storage.

    Flash, It's good to see you back working on a gasifier. I think your backup power system in your workshop is awesome ! This is especially true with a wood powered electric generator. Flash, I'm looking forward to your next video.

      @@flash001USA hi excellent video. Try a mushroom shaped hopper... The idea is the moisture in the wood rises and condenses on the larger surface area.. Also a catch to exit the water. .. I read about it in a book long ago. The story was that it worked so well, that they joked that there truck would run on snow , because they had throwing snow ball in... But the design remove the water before it went through the system

    This is great ! Nice build . I am impressed with the out put and its size . There is some technologiesthat you should look into with capacitive chargers that can bring your batteries to max in less than half of the time and power .. I am sure it will be most use full to your system and it keeps the batteries in great condition ..

      Master Shannon yeah I would have to agree. After seeing it constructed I was able to go back and look at things and see where I could make improvements along with seeing what other people have done with the build themselves. It's always good to be able to bounce ideas off of each other

    glad to see you back working on your gasifier. I had been ruunning my house on solar 24/7 for a couple years.When my main inverter failed. I usually charge the the main batteries over nite while still running my house on the inverter.at nite using comercial power. than i shut off comercial power during the day. if the sun is out. in winter.during the spring and summer aand fall im usually on my own power most of those months. but my main inverter failed on a very windy day. so im back on utility power. Since I built the inverter over 20 years a go. I decided to try and repair it. I workede on it 2hrs a day for about two weeks.and finally i think its ok. but still on commercial power. one thing I put much more3 powerful mosfet transistores in it. It has been so mush overcast weather this winter.I figure stay on commercial power.I bought a wood gasifier a couple years ago. and hope to use it to charge the batteries.but the weather has een so cold. and snow up here in up state new york that commercial power is so inviting. I give in to useing it It is good to see you working on that gasifier and charging your batteries.thaats a good design with the center air feed down the center of the hopper. Keeep the Faith JOHN.

      Thanks for the reply John. I'm actually finishing up the automated controls. I've already got the circuit board built and tested and all the cosmetics as far as the box and even the artwork for the faceplate for the control knobs. As far as the actual box everything will mount up in it's been completed and drilled out ready for things to actually be assembled and my next step is to put it all together. You say you built your own controller? Is it a pwm controller or a mppt controller just curious? Yeah I can relate to not wanting to do anything in the cold weather it definitely takes the motivation out of getting out and doing physical projects like chunking wood for the gasifier etc.

    Nice to see you getting a new, and much needed, fix of woodgas bug venom in veins :) .
    You really have tidied up your gasser very nicely, and I am sure it will fit under the roof of your Wattage Cottage just fine and dandy.
    Seems to me that your newest gasifier design is not too far off being a good performer. You've got a good handle on its shortcomings, so you'll have it up and running in perty short order, once you get some spare time to play with it :) .
    I sure do like that modular design approach that you have applied to it, as rapid disassembly for service and upgrades ranks mighty highly in my books.
    Keep up the woodwork, oops, good work, my fellow energy conversion addict :) .

      Steve I plan on going back and making the corrections on the newer build but for now I'm back up and running so I'll concentrate on the automation before I repair the new build.

      Indeed, you have plenty to do, before the winter sets in, so I imagine that your newest gasser will have to go into hibernation in the meantime :) .
      Mine needs some serious fixing, as it has clocked up over 1500 hours, and it is really showing its age.
      Nothing a hammer, a welder and a few beers won't fix.

    G,day Flash, wondered what happened to you,, its been a while, thought you might have forgotten about us,, good to see your new mods are paying off,, love how quick you can get that puppy up to gas,, personally i am still having issues with tar and chasing the elusive blue flame,,, i am running a 12 volt automated system with grate shakers on timers and hopper vibrators using windshield wiper motors etc etc etc,,,,, i may have over-engineered things on my set-up,, possibly over filtered the hell out of it,,, i am envious of the simplicity of your set-up, i believe i may have to simplify my set-up judging by the results you have achieved, must say. your single nozzle design is killer!! compared to my 5 nozzles which are a pain in the butt, i can see my self doing a "Flash rebuild" soon, keep us posted and i have many questions for you once the silly season is over,, be safe and merry xmas from down under.

    I came across an old single stage gasifier that fed directly into an ancient generator motor that has been working since the 1950’s. The ‘dirty’ gas feeds directly into the adjusted carburetor once the fire has been going a bit. I guess I am not sure why all the fancy stuff that will not be handy or available in a survival or emergency’s situation...? I’m sure yours is better with many more uses but I’m just getting not expanding into a much more powerful one to run a resized mill.

      For the last 5 years I have been running a 48 volt system with your average flooded lead acid golf cart batteries and they've done fine. I have really put these batteries to work and they are now starting to wind down. I just purchased four 12V 200Ah LiFePO4 Batteries that will replace and should be an upgrade to the system that I plan on installing when the weather warms up a bit. Yeah it really felt good to set this system up and have it actually work. I am also running solar panels too. The gasifier is there ready to go should things go bad so I'm set up with power and since I have access to all of the wood I can use on the property, I now heat my house with a wood stove so I have all bases covered.

    Awesome! Hey how did your hearth hold up with the plaster/sand around it? I tried to weld some stainless bowls for my fire cone but it was too thin, now Im going to use thick steel cone and heatsink like yours. Im also wondering if a "U" shaped pipe full of cat litter or something would act as a good dessicant in line somewhere as well.

    You should sell plans. This is a very efficient model. I said I saw the old one but I’m impressed and think I could use one or more on our farm.

      no he should not sell these plans. the information is freely available in public documents. he should just publish a DIY tutorial and give it away freely. Wood-gas can create a revolution in America to get us off the need to buy propane gas for heating houses or the production of electricity, engines can even run on wood-gas. Lets not make the same mistakes as our forefathers and try to sell energy. If its free, the entire nation can be free and thats way better than one guy profiting from someone elses ideas

    So I have a trailer full of propane and compressors and I have plenty of fresh 55 gallon drums and other parts. I have 2 plasma cutters and 3 welders. So why did the one fail? Hopper narrowed? The 3 fire breathing dragon tubes. I know you said it was dysfunctional but why?

    GOOD job man but how you connect the blower what type it is

      The blower uses slip and fit PVC pieces so I can set it up to either to start the gasifier before the gas goes through the filters and once started I can move it to the gas output pipe and prime the filters so the motor starts easier. I got the blower at a junkyard so it doesn't have a name brand on it but it was used as a blower to inflate a yard ornament like a large 10 foot tall Halloween punkin or an inflatable Santa Clause in someones yard celebrating a holiday

    Amazing accomplishment. I've wanted to build a wood gasifier for a long time. I leaned in my younger day, that ingenuous persons built these, in small scale, that were placed on the back of cars and trucks during and after ww2 in France. Being I'm a past small engine mechanic, I have to question the long term reliability of the engine valves while ingesting a gas as a fuel. Intake and exhaust valves require a slightly rich mixture, of vapor, to cool the valves. Running an engine to lean, "not enough cooling vapor" can cause valves to over heat. Being this is gas with no evaporative cooling for the valves, what would be long term reliability of engine valves? Very curious.

      The engines run with no issues on woodgas just like a propane engine. The only thing you have to be careful with is any tars in the gas because they can gum up the engine valves so the wood chunks have to be good and dry for a complete burn. There are people on youtube who have worn out small engines on woodgas from long run times who got a long life out of their engines without any burnt valves or gumming issues so it does actually work quite well provided the system is set up correctly.

    I've watched all the videos, and I think I can replicate most of the design.
    The only thing I can't seem to understand is the last few inches of the burner system, where you did something with concrete, hex bolts, and a nozzle. Do you have a detailed drawing of that area or plans I can reference?

    when the air intake was closed and the generator shutdown, where do the gasifier gases still being produced go? it seems to me that the gases would pressurize the large drum and be an explosion hazard. any concerns or comments from the forum? how is this issue mitigated?
    also, assuming using a clean gas to fuel a generator, has anyone performed a breakdown inspection of the motor of the generator after 50 to 100 hours of run time? valves look ok? piston head and rings ok?

      The gasifier works exactly like puffing on a cigarette. The gasifier only produces combustible gas while the generator is drawing on it. Once the air intake was choked off the gas quits being produced. To answer what I think your question is, any gas left in the system will eventually dissipate on it's own. Keep in mind that a gasifier is a negative pressure device and not a positive pressure device. What that means is unlike a propane tank that is under pressure where there is gas in it until it's depleted, the gasifier works under a vacuum created by the engine intake drawing on it. Once the engine shuts off or quits running the gasifier inner pressure is neutral or non existent and what gas is still in it will eventually dissipate out on it's own usually over a couple of hours.

      One more answer to your questions. If there is tar in the gas it will gum and crud up the valves and the engine will have to be cleaned by disassembling it. This is why the temperatures along with how fast the gas flows through the gasifier have to be correct so that the ember bed is not only hot enough to crack the tar but that the gas moves slow enough through the ember bed to allow the tar to be broken down. The tar is broken down not only to more add to the fuel for a more robust fuel but it is turned into soot which can be filtered out. This is why I am showing that there is no smoke or other impurities in the gas by showing a closeup of the flair before it is light up.       Oh yeah, no doubt. It just needs to be seasoned or dried pine.

    Hi flash001usa thanks for answering my comment.Imamazed at that youhave sucessly charged your main batteries from your gasifier. a thing that I would like to do with my gasifier. hopefully. and also post a video. NO I dont use any maximum point solar charger on my 3kw 120v solar array. I have tried it in the past and got interfearance in my tv. so i abandoned that project a along time ago.my system is a 120v dc input traansformerless inverter with square wave output.home built 25 yeaars ago.the efficiency of the inverter is closse to 100% I run every thing inthe house.all mager apliences.and elecctronics.If I may brag to say. The inverter has failed me it sseems every three or four years. IM glad I keeped a schematic on it.The main problem is I dont get enough energy in the winter do to lack of sun. thats why im interested in a wood gasifier which i have a M4 vulcan unit. my inverter has failedd due to an lightening strike to anear by tree. aalso doto an oveer voltage situation oncee when mg electric water heater 1600w fuse blew This was my dump load.of which I didn't know the fuse blew.aand thdc v went up to 170v i believe.I causes a short circuit once. that did it. Well any this iss a period of over 25 years.I recently repaired it again. With better Mosfets. It is a Mosfet bridge. fhat feeds120v ac sqquare wave to the house. I recently bought apowerjack 5 k inverter. low freq. 12v input sine wave inverter very reasionable. If you can read mandoline. instruction book.ha ha. 73s wa2ibv,john keep the Faith

    Yup 12" is the min for chips, Ive built from 6" all the way up to 16" hoppers and 12" is the magic size for chips. All of the machines smaller then this needed heavy intervention to flow chips.

      Yeah a lesson learned but at least I can correct it and have a good 2nd gasifier once I make the changes. My 55 gallon drum build works great and since this video I'm almost finished with the automation. I've had a ball doing this plus it's been a great learning experience. Nothing like seeing a generator run off of yard waste.

      You noted that the char is filling up to quick. This maybe part of your bridging issue everything is falling through to fast and causing some aggressive bridging issues? This will most likely lead to some tars, might need to tighten up your grate some and that may help. Also because you are running more jets you now have a more agresive oxidation zone. If fuel is burning out to fast and you are not creating enough char and its falling out at the same time that will lead to some frustrations for sure. To build more char back the jet lengths off so they are processing more fuel. Jets length is how much fuel you process in the machine, the jet oppening is how rich or lean you are for the amount of fuel you process. Just thought Id put that into perspective no one seems to explain that part.

      I should correct myself here. Compared to the big 55 gallon drum the smaller 100 gallon propane tank build fills up faster due to being physically smaller in diameter. There is another thing too. The 55 gallon drum has a flat bottom and that makes biochar clean out really easy because I can use a regular fireplace ash shovel where the propane tank build has a curved bottom which makes clean out a bit more aggravating. In reality both the failed build and the 55 gallon build have the same hearth and the same restriction throat dimensions. The two places where I went wrong were making a wood hopper less than 12 inches in diameter. That was the big mistake. The second snafu is that I should have built a shroud around the air nozzles like you have with your build so that I could have had a single air input that fed the air nozzles which would allow me to choke the system down when shutting down. The good thing is everything can be corrected and in the near future I'll make the corrections so that I can get this build into the game. I had to laugh when I seen you shut your generator down and you had the flame thrower come from your air intake port. That's what my build did through the three nozzles. It looked like a fire breathing dragon and building a shroud like you have on yours plus adding a foot of air intake pipe and raising it above the ember bed will stop that in it's tracks.

      I basically jumped into this blind. Originally I was going to produce alcohol for fuel but there were just too many steps and I wanted to find something more straight forward when I stumbled across wood gasification but everybody was tight lipped about it and wanted to sell you plans unless you were building a FEMA so I went to as many collage websites and read as much as I could on the subject then I came across All Power Labs but by then I had experimented and came up with what appeared to be a stable clean build for my needs which was for small engines in the range of 5 Hp up to 12.5 Hp. All Power Labs had the basic design guidelines for people to download for free to be able to build a gasifier which was the hearth guidelines along with the charts for air movement or engine displacement but I never tried to build a system for a larger engine. I really like your concept and you managed to come up with a simple clean build so for that I tip my hat to you for a job well done.

      Woodgas doesn't give quite the punch gasoline does which is why people will over size their engine to offset any power losses. This 2000 watt generator delivers between 1500 to 1600 watts on woodgas.

    hi flash001USA I forgot to mention that those fuses you have in side your batery box could be an explosion hazad to be blunt about it. I have had a few car batteries explode on me in the past. when i went to disconnect the chsrger from them. with the cover on the box when charging .gasses can build up, and if a fuse blows.boom .even though you have holes in the cover, my sugesstion leave the cover off. MY battery shed is 200ft from the house. and my batteries on shelves on both sides of the one car garage.i LEAVE THE WINDOWS OPEN SLIGHTLY IN WINTER OPEEN ALL THE WAY IN SUMMER. i HAVE FOR WINDOWES IN THAT SHED..ITSS NOT HEATED IN THE WINTER. i SEEN THE TEMPDOWN TO 0 IN WINTER YET YHOSE BATTERIES STILL WORKED OK. iHAVE HAD BATTERIES BREAK THERE CASES IN THERE IN THE PAST.DO TO FREEZING..SO I TRY TO KEEP THEMFULLY CHARGED IN WINTER. WEN THE SPECIFIC GRAVERTY GOES BELOW 1.150THATS THE LOWER LIMIT i LET THEM GO SO THEY DNT HAVE ICCE IN THEM.. IF THEY HAVE ICE IN THEM FOR GET. i ACTUALLY SEEN FROST DDN THE OUTSIDE OFTHERE CASES. WHEN YOU HAVE A RAINY DAY AFTER A COLD SPELL.. OR CONDISATION WOUD BE ALL OVER THEM FLASH001 ONE MORE THING i WOUDD LEAVE ALITTLE SPACE BETWWEN ALL BATTERIES AS DIRT SND GRIME SEEM S TO ACCUMULATE ON TOP OF THEM AND LEAKAGE CURRENT WOULD TENDTO GO ACROSS FROM ONE BATTERY TO ANOTHER AND WILL DRAIN THEM. i HAD THIS PROBLEM WITH FOUR 2VOLT CELLS THAT HAD GRIME ON TOP AND THEY WERE ALWAYS NEAR DEAD.       Not as much as you might think but the main thing is to run the generator for at least 5 or 6 hours so around 2 or 3 buckets of wood depending on the wood used and how depleted the battery bank is.

      Thanks for the reply. This is a Imbert system so it gets hot enough to break down the tars or to reduce them down so much that what's left is removed in the filtering.

      A gasifier will run pretty much any gasoline engine. You have to build an external carburetor to set up the correct fuel to air ratio mixture.

      It can be set up to run as small as a 6.5 Hp up to a 12.5 Hp engine. I really had to experiment with the hearth restriction until I got the gas where I felt safe running an engine on it. This is why I never ran a generator on the setup in the earlier videos because I wanted to work out the devil in the details. The hearth and restriction throat calculation info out there is fuzzy at best because there are so many different types of wood and it all behaves differently when converted over to woodgas. In the end it really comes down to the person who is operating the gasifier to have a "feel" and an understanding of their system and as long as it has been constructed correctly you will get quality consistent woodgas. I hope that helps answer your question and gives you an idea of how this works.

      The fan blower was an oddball find for me. The blower I got came from a junkyard and it was a blower used on those 8 foot tall inflatable Santa's or other similar inflatable yard ornaments people put up during holidays. I had to make mods so that I could marry it up to the gasifier but it works quite well. You want a blower that has an external motor so that only the turbine blades are exposed to the woodgas as it starts up. You also don't want something that has too much vacuum such as a shop vac because that will draw too hard on the gasifier.

      That question gets asked a lot. It's not a simple matter of just compressing the gas because it needs to be scrubbed and processed to make sure there is no oxygen in it because if not, you have a hydrogen bomb sitting in your back yard. The gasifier is a "gas on demand" design which makes it very safe to work with. Another thing, Propane compresses to a liquid which means you can store a lot of runtime in a small bottle. Woodgas won't liquefy under pressure like propane will so the runtime on a compressed bottle is very low. This is also the downfall of natural gas because like woodgas, natural gas will not compress down to a liquid but instead they have to build special bottles that can withstand pressures up to 4000 lbs like a welders oxygen tank.

      Yeah somewhere in the gasifier videos I cover the single nozzle setup. I originally had the nozzle running down the side of the wood hopper then I decided to run it down the center.

      The generator I have in the video is a 2000 watt generator but running it on woodgas (syngas) will only produce between 1600 to 1700 watts. People will normally run bigger generators to off-set the losses. This gasifier can handle a 12.5 Hp engine with no issues which will be around 3200 watts.

      It's a blower and it's used to draw the gas through the system until the engine is hooked up to the gas output.

      Absolutely. Think of the gasifier as a cigarette. You have to pull air through it to even be able to light it and get it started. The blower serves two purposes. First it allows us to start the gasifier and get it warmed up and the second purpose is to pull the gas through the filters (prime the filters with gas) so that it does not work the engine as hard by using it as a pump plus this allows the engine to start easier. The blower is removed and the engine intake takes it's place. I hope that helps you understand what the purpose of the blower is used for. Basically it is used as a vacuum on the gasifier to start it up.

    What size system would one need to super heat steam in a steam generator kinda like the a 1925 Doble? Wouldn't it be cool to have a small unit that would run a steam generator, that would in turn drive an AC electric motor with gobs of torque?

    Did you say you could add some sugar to the water jar and make wood alcohol? Wasn't it govt issued wood alcohol additives that contributed to the poisoning and loss of life that helped bring about an end to prohibition, along with the end to WW-I? So if memory serves, it's not a good idea to drink wood alcohol?

      Hey Doc you must have misinterpreted my meaning behind the remark of adding sugar to it and making wood alcohol. Oh yeah no doubt that wood alcohol is highly poisonous. For those of us in the gasifier community it's a running joke to save that black water and mix sweeteners and other flavors to it and serve it as a beverage to guest and friends. Even if you were to ferment it with sugar it still would not technically be wood alcohol. The stuff that's captured in the tank and the jar is for all practical purposes Liquid Smoke which is practically the same thing you buy at the grocery store for outdoor barbecuing so if somebody were to add sugar to it and really try to ferment it all you would wind up with would be something very nasty with ethyl alcohol in it including any other nasty compounds that were captured during the gasifier run.

    If "firewood" contains 6600 btu/lb. How much "heat" can you produce from pyrolysis of a given quantity of firewood to run a 110vac genset producing 10amps of current electricity? Raw wood heat or burning wood into woodgas to run a genset producing electricity to power an electrical heater? Raw wood produces the most heating BTUs? IF: 3.41x10amps=3410BTU/hr requires about 2 hours of burning firewood for electrical power to produce the same amount of heat for every pound of firewood consumed. 2 hours/pound burning firewood producing woodgas is doubtful... What say you? Too much mechanical for woodgas vs natural wood burning in a fireplace/barrel heating.

      In my first reply to you I gave you a link to an older video where I ran test calculating wood consumption vs real world usable power produced. As to BTU's you have to keep in mind that the hearth where the burn is happening no larger than 1-1/2 softballs combined and in reality it's probably less than that and there are no actual flames inside the hearth either. We have a hot bed of embers that are around 1-1/2 maybe 2 inches deep on the topside of the hearth where the gas is actually produced with a running temperature of around 1650 Deg F up to 1800 Deg F so the heat produced is not much in such a small space internally. Something else to consider. We are NOT burning the wood to ash but instead we are producing charcoal and that too can be recycled and it too will produce fuel that will run the generator. In reality we can get two runs from the same batch of raw wood fuel. To get the best efficiency on pure charcoal you really need a gasifier designed specifically for charcoal. As to heat or BTU's produced you would have to combine both the first raw wood run numbers followed with the charcoal run to get an accurate figure. The wood fuel may not be a perfect solution and it's not for everyone but for those who have an understanding it's damned well worth the hassle because you are literally producing real usable fuel that will run an engine with nothing more than a modified trash can and a few pieces of pipe and the wood can be harvested for free. I hope this gives you an indication of just how useful this very old technology can be especially under an emergency situation. In the end ask yourself the following two questions: Would you rather have this system during a no fuel emergency or would you rather have nothing to run in your generator under emergency circumstances? I'll choose door number 2 Monty. Am I ready for a poop storm should things go bad? Yes sir I am! Thank you for your feedback. Have a nice day.

      @Flash001USA 11 pounds of chunked wood sticks burned for 2 hours making woodgas to power a 5hp engine turning a 3kw electric generator connected to a 1,000 watt light load. Thank you for the video information. What is clear to me are:
      1. The engine is noisy and obtrusive for my living environment.
      2. The same 11 pounds of wood could be burnt quietly to produce: 11lbs x 6,600BTU/lb = 72,600 BTUs
      3. Knowing my living room and kitchen requires about 10,000 BTU/hr to maintain 68°F when it's 35-38°F outside means up to 6 hours of warm heat from the same wood quantity. It would be possible to build a fire 2-3 times a day and be 'snug as a bug' without relying on an engine or the associated noise or likely maintenance/repair issues.
      4. With better engineering to capture most of the wood's thermal energy into a heat storage box be it rock, antifreeze, paraffin, or some other Phase Change Material (PCM) of Chemistry.
      What might be the best solution for heating? A split system heat pump. At 200 to 500% efficiency for every dollar of electricity used it will pump 2-5 times the amount of outside heat to the inside. Even the best pellet stove is only 97% effective making split heat pumps more than double effective... I cannot think of a more economical way to heat your house. Can you?

      @@douglaspohl1827 You are more than welcome for the information. This was never designed for producing heat. It's sole purpose is just to make a quick and safe enough fuel to run a small to mid sized generator for power. Yes you technically could set up a special insulated box to harvest the heat generated from the gasifier itself and even use a heat exchanger in conjunction to capture or harvest the engine exhaust heat but that would be a lot of over-kill especially when you could just use a different method as you have explained for heating purposes in your last reply.

      for diesel you need a little bit of diesel gas as well to run it

      Actually I did run the generator in this video. I just completed the controller for the automation and have released a new video running the generator which is powering up the shop and charging a battery bank.

    Why not just build the proven Ben Peterson design? Plastic pipes and filters have no place in a wood gasifier.

      Then you should go build the proven Ben Peterson design for yourself. As to plastic PVC pipes these pipes are no where near any kind of heat so they are not an issue. As to this build, it's signed sealed and delivered aka PROVEN by trial and error and real world testing and it is made out of the most basic cheap parts one could find out of the junkyard.
