I just missed getting sucked into the ocean on the wharf here in Santa Cruz, I was watching the waves and started to ride my bike back to the foot of the wharf when I heard a loud Crack and turned around to see a part of the wharf falling off into the ocean, I'm here right now in Santa Cruz watching this and taking pictures
That "guy" they rescued was actually my niece. She's an engineer who's been working on the construction there for the past few months. Crazy, but she's actually fine.
I have dived under that wharf and can say that only one in three pillings are structurally sound. One out of three don't extend to the sand. Just rotted hollow logs. Last year I was there when a section drifted way that started this closure and repair project. It needs millions in upgrades and repairs and suffers from a lack of funding.
I remember in the 80's during one of the El Nino storms the end of the Huntington Beach Pier did the same thing but, it was a restaurant that floated out to sea. Later they sent divers to salvage all the dishes and silverware.
@@lalalalala7779me too, What gets me is there so many people worried about tornadoes and Santa Cruz had his first yet. California has had 480+ tornadoes since they started recording them.
I go there often. The pilings in that area were damaged and The Wharf was sagging for many months. They started work on the top, but they left the damaged pilings to just float around, they never repaired them. I thought at the time how stupid they aren't securing the foundation! And now the entire end of the wharf, the sea lion viewing portals, the bathroom building and the restaurant are gone the restaurant are gone
A beautiful pier (very historic), a historic Beach Boardwalk amusement park, (100 year old Giant Dipper coaster!!), and a gorgeous little town!! Hopefully now they’ll RESTORE, and RENOVATE the pier with stronger piling, etc. ……Hopefully in a few years the entire RENOVATED pier reopens stronger, and better than ever!!
I live in Santa Cruz but I’m currently in Scotland until after Hogmanay. My sister who is dog sitting told me this happened. Initially, I was doubtful as she can exaggerate quite a bit. I had to look this up and see for myself! 😳
People who are working on fixing an old wharf? Maybe? Or once it gets old do you just not work on it and let it fall into the ocean? Or fix it but only with light weight equipment?
I was fishing at the oceanside pier yesterday and holy frijole the surf was intense. You could feel the pier fighting against the surf and current I kept thinking "I wonder how secure the pier is"
Yes, the very tip of Municipal Pier, just past Stagnaro Brother Restaurant. That would be what was left of the Dolphin Restaurant out there swimming...
I lived there in 1989. I was there during the 89’ earthquake. Then I lived in Ben Lomond in 1994. The weather shifts there fast. I always enjoyed that whole area.
I have lived here all my life and NEVER felt safe on this wharf, it's really creaky and shaky and when you step on the boards some of them bounce a little! It never felt stable. I hate to say this, because the family that owns the Boardwalk are amazing, but I've always felt the same way riding the Big Dipper Roller Coaster at the Boardwalk.
That "guy" is actually my niece 🤣. Seriously. She's an engineer who's been working on the pier retrofit for the past few months. She's doing fine thank goodness. I gotta say she's pretty cool under pressure.
Why did the swimmer jump into the water to rescue a person high and dry? With all that massive debris in the water he put himself in a dangerous situation. The other person getting rescued just walked onto the back of the ski without getting his boots wet. This footage will be studied by first responders on what not to do.
As many times that wharf has suffered damage over the years. You'd think the engineering would have gotten better. But then again, Mother Nature is a force to be reckoned with! Hope everyone is OK!
Perhaps they knew the jetski was coming during the entire video length ..plus it could be a trail of hazards There's lifeguard towers everywhere..I'm confident response time was quick
I predict the environmentalists will win and the wharf will never be rebuilt. All funding that was to go to the wharf will now go towards more bike lanes.

My sailboat hit that pier during a storm, and the wood that was left on my boat was like cork. You could just snap it apart. They didn’t have structural engineers, and what about a rebuild and an overhaul over so many years

It was you. The wharf couldn't handle the weight of you and your bike. Shame!

Yep. JetSki much better than tractor in this situation.

That was the most casual rescue I’ve ever seen.

What took 2 years to build in 1930 will now take 15 years and be several billions over budget. Rip pier

I wonder what happened to the bulldozer thing?
Why does this video feel like it's from the 1990's? What the heck is going on?
Because it is taken with digital zoom. You can't think? America is dumb.
Respect 1991 it gave you everything you currently have right now yet you do not even reminisce.

So why was this pier not looked after, the timbers must have been showing fatigue.
@ The pier has been updated, and reinforced over the decades, but recent huge surf, tides, etc have increased wear. It needs a thorough renovation.
