- The stage is set for the upcoming presidential election on the 18th of July*. The ruling BJP-led NDA has nominated #DroupadiMurumu for the highest post, a former school teacher who later became the first woman Governor of Jharkhand.
The opposition has nominated #YashwantSinha, a former IAS officer who later served as a finance minister in Atal Bihari Vajpayee's government.
How does the President of India get elected?
Unlike the Prime Minister, the #President of India is elected indirectly. That means no direct voting, but instead, the President is elected by the electoral college.
The electoral college is a set of electors that consists of elected members of both Houses of the Parliament and the legislative assemblies of all States, including Delhi and Puducherry.
The nominated members of Rajya Sabha and State assemblies are not eligible to vote. But the process is not that simple. Not every vote counts as one. Each MPs vote carries a fixed vote value of 700.
But in the case of MLAs, the vote value is calculated based on the population of the State, that differs from one state to another.
To win the election, a nominee has to secure the quota, half the total votes of the electoral college plus one.

There is a very crucial role of opposition in an democracy. Hence the rulling party must also made aware that the opposition party too have their own presidential candidate.

What is meaning of that 1/1000
We divide by 1000 to bring the value in 3 digits or lesser than that.
If we dont divide by 1000, the value of 1 MLA vote will go in Lakhs.
And that will be inconvenient to count

Wouldn't it be better that all the elected members from Gram Panchayat to the Rajya Sabha would be part of the electoral collage and each vote irrespective of the post would have one value.
The same reason why citizens don’t elect a president directly. Unreasonable election complexity.
The current system is designed to distribute votes per a set of populous meaning that each citizen indirectly carries the same vote value. If you allow lower representatives to be participated, the system needed to be such that, vote values to be normalized at every level.
