I just learned Rae Dawn Chong who plays Carola in the "Lover's Vow" segment is not only Tommy Chong's daughter but she was Squeak in "The Color Purple."

I agree with Gary, you see it's the emotional resonance of the 3rd story that really gets to you, the sadness of the gargoyle that he broke his word and destroyed their happy life together, the way she cradles their children in their statue form, the feelings between them undiminished by their transformation, they all still love one another, that never changes no matter what. The other stories are pretty stupid although I do like the kid winning in the end, you think "Yeah, attaboy!"

If I had to choose a favorite story from this film, it would definitely be Lover's Vow. It is based on the Japanese tale of Yuki-Onna, the Snow Woman, a common version of which can be found in The Kwaidan. I liked the gargoyle effects, and the sadness that was interwoven into this particular horror story. I also agree have to agree with Gary that, in the case of this trilogy, Tales from the Darkside saved the best for last.

I love this movie! The last story, “Lover’s Vow”, was SO depressing...

  • @LordMalice6d9

The final storie's ending always made little sense to me. All he did was reveal the secret to the same gargoyle creature that he made the promise too. Its not like he revealed the secret to whole world or to his other friends, but she still kills him! I guess it was supposed to be a vow and bond of love.

I definitely think the third story is the best. The other two were okay but kind of goofy. The third story had way more of an emotional impact on me when I first saw it. I really felt genuinely sad for him at the end

I feel like they chose the order of the tales in regards to production cost. The mummy looked super cheap, and although the effects in the second one were fun, they were pretty bad. Then you got the animatronic gargoyle AND that transformation at the end!!

11:52 If you still need reminding of what this actor has also been in, I can tell you that this isn’t the only anthology series he’s been in. He was the main character in an episode of _Tales from the Crypt_ called “The Switch”, which was directed by Arnold Schwarzenegger.

I remember William Hickey as Rudolf Smuntz, the old man who owned the string factory in Mousehunt, and the hitman? David Johannsen from The New York Dolls (and Scrooged!) I also noticed that one of the old guy's family was Alice Drummond, who played the librarian from the original Ghostbusters, as well as Dan Marino's mum from Ace Ventura! To be honest, there's loads of recognisable actors in TFTD

The gargoyle segment is actually based off a Japanese ghost story. In the story a villager rests in a hut with his friend, who is then killed by this ice spirit who then tells the villager that if he tells anyone what he saw she'll show up and kill him. The story in both is pretty much the same , but the one major difference is that in the story the spirit lets the man live in the end out of love for the kids.

true story, when I was about 10 years old, the neighbor's cat attacked me face-hugger style as seen in 'The Cat from Hell'. It obviously didn't kill me but left some gnarly scratches on the side of my head. It's basically a pounce move, lol

Oh my god, this movie absolutely TERRIFIED me as a kid. Only saw it once, but it stuck with me. The Cat segment was the one that really messed me up a particularly because that was around the time our family cat had passed away. So it was just like trauma heaped onto trauma. Even watching your guys review this for the first time I felt like I was going through a sort of ptsd or something!
Funny thing, I'm pretty sure the Gargoyles segment was the only story that DIDN'T traumatise me, simply because it was a tragic love story that I'd never seen before.

I agree with everyone who rated the third tale best. I saw this film when I was a kid and the emotion of those characters and the excellent monster effects made it stick in my mind ever since. That the guy was James Remar who I also enjoyed in The Warriors mDe it seem more tragic to me too (like this was a nice non-rapey ajax and gets killed). I never guessed she was the gargoyle. I had no reason to. And the kids turning too. Never really liked Cat From Hell. I felt the film dragged in that bit. Really disliked that segment.

For me a nice (custom) zombie anthology to binge with friend is
Tom Savinni's Night of the Living Dead (The remake to George A. Romero's Night of the living dead)
Dawn/Day of the dead (George A.Romero's aka the originals...the remakes sucked hard especially day)
Finally Land of the dead by George A Romero....why because it's got some pretty funny and entertaining B movie quality.
Possible bonus of either Shaun of the Dead, Road of the Dead, or (if you want to break the of the dead connection) I suppose ZombieLand.
PS do you know that there is a zombie film with Dolph Lundgren fighting back to back with a giant robot....I believe it was called Zombie vs Robot or something like that.
