This would not sit well with the people and all the other lords, thus removing him from the line of succession.

Its pretty telling that once the curse had been lifted from him and passed on he didn't hesitate single moment to pass the crown and immediately kill himself. It just goes to show how much miserable and meaningless his life was after he sleept with Grendel's mother. His legal wife hated him and was repulsed by him(though who could blame her I mean her husband layed with a literal demon). He couldn't have any heir and since the deal meant peaceful prosperous rule the only thing he could do to kill his boredom in his peaceful rule as king was having parties. A robert baratheon so to speak. Great warrior in his youth but after the deal a former shadow of his former self. At least Beowulf got a final heroic deed before dying.
The most accurate book of beowulf was not as depressing as this one was, in reality he killed Grendel and his mother and leaving as an amazing hero, 50 years later when beowulf was in his 70s a runaway slave crept into the mountain only to find a dragon hoarding an immense wealth(first ever depiction of a dragon and gold) the slave steals a few pieces and returns to beowulfs kingdom attempting amends for running away, enrages the dragon and beowulf alone confronts him but age got the better of him and almost died until a 17 year old alone saved and fought alongside beowulf finally killing the dragon. The toll was 5oo great and before beowulf passed away next to the dragon he gave the boy his rings and lifelong equipment naming the boy a true hero on his deathbed.
