I always find it frustrating that Müller never provides us with a definitive end to this story. Couldn't he, for once, allow the character (I wish we knew his name) to meet someone else while performing with the hurdy-gurdy man? Jonas Kaufmann is such a genius. Watching this clip, he displays a thorough understanding of these verses and of Schubert's interpretation of them. The amount of accenting here, diminishing there, warm and tender phrasing, dark and dismal empathising, and cheerful and bright flourishes, all requiring vocal dexterity which JK has in abundance, is clear to hear/see in this clip. He is such a master at singing lieder. I think he's unbeatable. Helmut Deutsch has obviously been a good tutor and his skills as an accompanyist are phenomenal. This is such a wonderful cd.
Isolde227: You say it for me as well. And Schubert has waited nearly two hundred years for this interpretation. To see up close these master performers and hear their comments is a God-given gift. Kaufmann's visual reaction to the final song says it all. This performance so relates to the Db Impromptu of Schubert's last year. And I, at 73, thought I wouldn't be buying any more CDs.
This is so gorgeous to discover. I've listened to many versions of this, recorded and public performance, and to me, this is a joy! This mans personality comes through what he's doing-a very good interpreter. He says something with his voice. I go to bed happy tonight. Love it! JK should keep singing ALL the music he loves.
I think that Kaufmann disagrees very legitimately with the common interpretation of the Leiermann as a symbol of Death. To my mind, “Die Winterreise” is the story of a traumatized man who, towards the end, begins to give himself a successful psychotherapy. He has survived throughout the cycle by giving himself endorphins by means of incessant wandering through nature. The deepest point of his depression is “Das Wirtshaus.” “Der Leiermann” at the conclusion represents the narrator's first communication in the cycle with a fellow human being - and thus the initiation of the recovery from his trauma.
si la démonstration de maîtrise de j kaufmann se mariait avec la theatralite et la percpetion schubertienne de bostridge....ce monde aurait trouvé la perfection non?
