BRO! That Barry Jag 😭 love it! Glad you and your family are safe from the storm. It was wild over in Orlando, but thankfully we're safe too! Love the Alt Indie/Rock vibes in this one.
I really appreciate the fact that you included yourself making a mistake in the process. That is rarely seen in YT. It’s refreshing. This channel is great and I love your approach to music. Rock on. Also DIIV rocks. 🤘🏽
i originally started music playing guitar, which lead me to start producing trap. In the last year or so ive been focusing on becoming an artist which has really taken me away from producing, but it has also brought me back to making indie/alt rock tracks. I also work full time so it was hard to put aside time to write and record vocals, let alone make a instrumental. So ive been using free instrumentals off of youtube. However, watching your channel has re-motivated me to start playing guitar again and taking the time write and record. Thanks for inspiring me! I will be looking forward to the next video
I appreciate hearing your perspective, thank you for sharing. I love creating in the box, most of what I do is on a computer. But lately I've been getting back into being organic with creating, using my hands more, and I forgot how inspiring it can be.
Dude, I have so many questions. Honestly, I've kinda gone down the rabbit hole with a bunch of your videos this week. I'm really loving the way you write these. I've written songs in a lot of different ways over the years, but my main process has always been acoustic and vocals to write and then flesh out the arrangement from there, whether with a band or on my own. For the most part, when I've written into the DAW it's felt more like a demo than a finished song. I've really been blown away by your ability to get so much polish on these tracks, and if I'm picking it up correctly you're using Loic stock amps for everything? I have so many questions. But like I said before, these videos are super inspiring. Thanks for sharing your process like this.
you're too kind, I appreciate hearing that! Send me a message on my website, trevwbarnes.com. Let's book a call and have a quick chat about those questions! And yes, I mostly use Logic's stock amps. I prefer writing in my DAW because I don't like to toy around with demos too much, I want to get to the idea as quickly as possible to capture as much magic as I can. That's just my process. And the biggest thing that has helped me, especially with writing in the DAW, is familiarity with my sound selection. From familiarity comes being able to do things quickly (not that it's better or worse if it's quick).
Your process is so inspiring man, i keep picking up little tips and tricks. Everytime i watch one of your videos i have to go make something! Good work dude keep it up
Well done Trev! 😀👍🏻 Such an enjoyable and inspiring video (as always!). Take care about recent floods (we also had one in France, 2 days ago) and please keep on inspiring us!! 😉 Cheers!!
Your videos are such a big inspiration to me, as someone currently working on their own body of work. You're also my biggest comfort channel right now, the vibes are unmatched.
Great stuff! You just make churning out songs effortless, definitely inspiring. I personally also really hate making this kind of music without live drumming (i don't have space for a set at home :( ) but you really make it work with your drum programming
Song's a banger! Big appreciation for these videos. Love seeing your process. Also respect for all the production that goes into these. Thank you and glad you're safe.
I haven't even seen this video and I already know I am going to love it. Just want to say, your channel has become my absolute favourite at a rapid rate. I have seen majority of your videos, and put them on while doing repetitive tasks at work, almost like a podcast. I've recently purchased more gear for recording because you have inspired me to get started with producing again. Keep up the great work, and thank you for inspiring me to produce more 🙏
Definitely Joe P. Was genuinely impressed how reminiscent of his music this sounded. Also gotta say the last bit on the guitar solo that you said you "messed up" was imperfectly perfect, wish you left it in.
Great stuff man! Very inspiring! Maybe just work on that chorus a bit more for it sounds great but a different song altogether. The whole thing, imo should be cohesive. But i love how organically you make such great songs!
I personally don't fully understand what you mean. Are you talking about the pre-chorus? This song is structured well in my opinion. It fits the style he was going for well. The only thing I would maybe change is the first pre-chorus or lead-up to the chorus vocal melody as it distracts me a little. Maybe you're not super familiar with this style of music, or maybe we just have very different opinions lol. I respect you though.
@@itelii absolutely dig his approach and the sound he went for. I just feel the chorus (specifically) could have been more cohesive with the rest of the song. A little more familiarity in terms of the tones used in chorus and other sections could have done it for me. It’s a subjective take on the whole thing. No disrespect for this man. He is an inspiration ❤
I saw diiv with HJOL about a month ago and got to meet the guitarist !! I got a photo with him and his pick along with the bassists! They earned a new fan ahhh
@@TrevBarnes My assumption was that they named themselves after the early Nirvana b-side 'dive', since they're massive fans. And it's a sick fucking song
@ good albums but they also have some gems on their other albums. Skin Graph, Bloody Mary, Simmer, and Out of Breath from the album, Neck of the Woods. And Circadian Rhythm and Ragamuffin from Better Nature. Favorite song from Carnavas is still Rusted Wheel though.
It's the rubbermaid fasttrack. It's mainly made for hanging tools in a garage. The hooks for it (usually hangs shovels, rakes, etc) mostly fits perfect for most guitar headstocks. The only thing I've tried to hang but can't are Fender basses, the headstocks are a little too spread for it to hang straight
@@TrevBarnes That's awesome, I was actually at lowes recently looking at something similar and was wondering if it would work and I guess it does! Thanks!
Which gear did you have before buying all these stuffs. and also when did you felt like you have to buy all these gears? also how did you buy so many gears. im jealous ps: aways love a video from you
Gear doesn’t matter, all you need is a computer, interface, and a way to record. I truly wouldn’t focus on it at all. 99% of what I do is with minimal gear.
Yeaaa this is great. I'm always hating on Logics guitar sims (which I also use since I have no amps atm) but this makes me see right past that and urges me to just get the idea down and enjoy the process. Sidenote: What kinda interface are ya using? I've been considering a UAD Apollo Quad but not sure just yet.
Love the content dude, hope you're fine and well down there, I have a question though, when you write and record, do you keep in mind the playability live? Like 2 guitars, a bass and drums, do you limit your tracks that way. Or do you layer guitars that can only be played live by more than 2 guitars if the direction leaves there? would love to hear your feedback on this one.
Hey there, thanks! And great question. I stopped playing live music in 2021, I did it consistently for 10 years and completely burned myself out. Long story lol. When it comes to production, generally, no, I don't think about playability because this is simple for the sake of making a song versus logistically with a band. If I was in a band or playing these songs live, I would definitely keep playability in mind. However I view production and performance as two different forms of art. I think production and performance should be separate lives of the song. The production to me is more of a capture of "inside the mind" of the artist, where as the performance is more of a capture of expression with an audience. Hope that makes sense!
maybe you've already done this, but I'd watch an in-depth tutorial on writing drums...I've been trying to avoid having to write my own drums for so long and I've finally realized there is no way around it...I have Logic Pro for iPad, Ableton Live 12 Lite, and FL Studio Producer Edition on my PC...I just want to make some cool indie/midwest emo/lofi drum tracks to play guitar and bass over...I need help 😭
