The price of boxes is out of control, dropping 1k on wax for “entertainment” is absolutely ridiculous. We have lost touch with reality.
It is his shop
It’s a rich man’s sport. Not for kids
What are you talking about kids collect cards and have cards that are worth more than most adults
definitily reality. If i had the money i would make that my reality too. I need a better a job to enjoy some of the spoils of life. Surely paying bills alone cant be all. I love sports cards collecting since i was a yongster, now the hobby is hyped x10. You dont have to wait years for cards to have value
@kevinpallow Agreed. It's gambling.
Gotta give the guy some credit, he's obviously being honest about what he's getting from the boxes that he picked.
This is why I stopped opening hobby boxes over 10 years ago. Have built a great collection one card at a time.
Yeah man, I finely smartened up and went the singles route and finally got a nice collection im building....
What have you been buying?
The title should be "i lit 1000 bucks on fire - did i make a profit?"
😂
😂😂😂
This is an exact representation of why you spend $1000 on a few valuable cards over a gamble.
Definitely a better investment!
@SportsCardInvestor crazy think. Wallmart hangers have provided me more case hits/ssp/sp and 1/1 than hobby and im over 25 years and 250k in
Still need the Goyim to open boxes though.
You say colts funny my friend. 17:14 for reference. You call them the calts and not colts
Would you go for raw or graded
$500 for 11 cards is beyond ridiculous, thats just straight up gambling
I Love VEGAS MATT, WBG and EJ !
Should have bought $50 lottery tickets instead ....
@@ChristopherY-wc3ufhe was better off laying a parlay
@@6MVGtoo bad he knows FA about basketball.
Ngl gambling is my favorite hobby I might get into this lol
What I love the most about this video is that you was honest and it was very helpful you could have did a second take and open different boxes where you could have found a valuable card to make people want to come in and buy boxes from you which probably would have been better for you to do but at least you were honest and honesty goes a long way. Thank you
From a collector back in the 80s and early 90s it’s just amazes me how small these boxes are anymore
Geoff does an excellent job of telling people don't gamble. Buy some boxes from time to time to enjoy the rip, but buying singles is the way to go.
1000 bucks for three tiny boxes is everything wrong with the hobby. I buy less because of this.
I like his approach and I would do it
@@richardyuen6354and you’d lose money too
Prices of boxes are stupid and taking kids out of the hobby. Such a waste of money. I used to buy a few boxes for my son every year for Christmas and now I can't anymore. I can get him a few retail boxes which stink. He doesn't even want to collect anymore because he is priced out of the hobby. Terrible!
Yup, totally agree
Def agree, ridiculous
100%
He might have fun in TCGs then :)
Ex: Magic, Pokemon, Lorcana. Packs and product are cheap, you can actually play with cards or just collect and boxes typically get you AT LEAST 1 good pull
Respect that he did it from his own shop as well to show the reality of ripping packs and boxes.
I’m just starting to get into the hobby (just got my first graded Wemby PSA 9) and this video probably just saved me a ton of money.
Will most likely just go to card shows in the future and make individual deals
"Can Geoff make a tax deduction & maybe profit Opening Sports Card Boxes? ($1,000 EXPERIMENT)"
So I should create my own LLC make a utube channel n break then ☺️
That was brutal, these boxes need a price correction but I don’t think it will happen, def cutting back on certain boxes
Its not hobby anymore, there lottery tickets
So glad you made this video! This is the case 9/10 times. Does not make sense to rip wax. Fanatics got too greedy or maybe even desperate for revenue. Hope this opens eyes for a lot of people.
The moment he said hold did I get a black rookie I spit my drank 😂😂
Kennedy takes the $1,080 and passes it right back to Geoff once the camera turns off 😂😂
100%
Do a video on owning the card shop. Is it profitable l, how long did it take to make a profit? Who are your breakers, why should we trust/love them? Why should we visit from around the country? What else can we expect? That would be dope
Great question!
He has done these videos with the other card shop investors, on the Geoff Wilson show/podcast
@Rocky-mg5lj that's not what I'm talking about. I'm looking do content that has never been seen before
Check out The Geoff Wilson Show channel on TH-cam where I cover this often
The margins on unopened is very small for shops. Someone is making bank but not the shop owners
The funny thing is that people still buy these..
Price keeps going up but people still gamble on these boxes. Absolutely hilarious to me 😂
Not all people open cards strictly for profit. I enjoy opening boxes so I open them. Its the thrill of the chase. Sure, there are way better ways to make money but it's a fun hobby and you only live once. Ima do what I like
@@tylertodd1012 *I’m going to
With the Skenes being pulled finally, i would hope that boxes start to drop in price A TON!! $500 boxes should now be $200 MAX with Skenes and several other patch cards pulled...
Wish they actually greeted & acknowledged their real customers like this when we come in.
I remember buying 86 fleer basketball packs for 75cents at my local comic shop. I even remember pulling a Jordan card and thinking it couldn’t be his rookie card cause it was his 3rd or 4th year card. Wish I had a time machine.
Back when they priced cards as a simple cardboard product. Now they put some green holofoil on it, only make 99 and convince people it’s $300 cardboard the moment it leaves the printer.
Holy smokes why are sports cards so expensive ??? Was considering going back to baseball cards but with these prices no way!!!!
When I started in 92, best box in town was a 100, then tops refractor hit, I didn’t do it for money,!I love to open packs, for fun and love of the cards
Answer is always no, but I will always watch these videos for fun 😂
OUCH!!! This sums up the entire modern card "hobby". Either hit a "banger" or go bust. No thanks. And the funny thing is everyone calls the 80's and 90's the junk wax era.
Totally agree with you. At least in the juke wax era, when we were getting a Ken Griffey Jr. or a Nolan Ryan, we were happy to get a great player and a valuable card to trade with our friends. Now, he’s pulling a Steph Curry and a Luka Doncic but since these cards are not signed super-duper foils holo premium, they are worthless. The hobby is a scam, gambling at best, now!!
At least if someone robbed you at gunpoint, you would get an adrenaline rush. This is highway robbery
I think I got better odds at Las Vegas Slots than, them 3 boxes 😂😅
I dont even have to watch the whole video(Im only 1:48 into vid)and I can tell you there is no way you are making a profit. 98% out of 100 times you are going to lose, and lose big too, but in the super rare occasion that you do hit a super rare card, then you might break even or make a profit.
Chances are if you do happen to get that banger, it's going to be damaged in some way. That's why its "randomly" inserted into a retail box.
Buying boxes is fun to rip but rarely ever worth the cost
If you’re buying a box from a reseller yeah no chance. Only if you get them for msrp
Ripping boxes used to be a fun thing me and my son would do each weekend until the pandemic hit and they started to skyrocket out of control. I just wonder what the future of the hobby will be like since the average parent isn't buying their kids a $300-$500 box of cards.
Good video as all of the regulars(TH-cam / long time hobbyists ) are saying avoid WAX and buy singles
At least he said several times that doing this is NOT a good idea to try and make money. When it gets to the point that people are ripping expensive boxes strictly in hope of making a profit, they have a serious problem. I'd rather spend a few dollars and rip a bunch of cards.
Those guys in the back just window shopping that would be me lol especially after looking at the prices lol
Wow that’s a big hit thanks for the info. I buy a lot of shingles from your whatnot store
Yup this is how a box opening goes, we’ve all said those lines before 😂
The price of sports cards is insane. There will be a day of reckoning.
@@Blub391 I hope so. Some or most are overpriced, stop buying and prices will drop
"Am I looking at a black rookie?" Had me dead, lol
"When it comes to Ben Simmons I'm buying" 😂 of course he hits a Ben Simmons.
Youd probably be better off buying $1000 of scratch cards at this point, the odds of pulling something good in one of these boxes is absalutly minuscule
@@mephisto40 these prices are brutal, if you could get half your money back, that would be kinda fair but still sucks
Man, I remember as a kid walking to the store with my cousin and buying as many packs as we could.
I regret not keeping them or buying Pokémon cards instead. But I was "too cool" for that at that age. I just got into it because my cousin really loved it.
Good times. He got some really good cards
This video was so funny and entertaining 😂🎉
love the videos want to come to cards hq
When calculating the sold comp did you also add the eBay seller fees and shipping cost?
Can you please share what box opener you are using to open your wax boxes?
Im usually a singles guy who rarely rips anything, but I recently changed by collecting strategy from collecting just my team to collecting all teams women's cards, so will be buying a case for the new release. I'm really looking forward to spending a whole day ripping packs next month. Hopefully I get plenty of women's cards in that.
This experiment shows us how ridiculously over priced boxes actually are. You’d have to be insane to buy hobby boxes to rip at this point. The only way is to buy singles or buy into players breaks
this was the most realistic rip videos ive seen in awhile ..... big reason I started to just buy singles , Stinks because I loved opening boxes with my kid but its just not even fun anymore when you drop that cash and this is what you get.
Geoff spent almost $1,100 dollars on these 3 boxes, and he might(and I use this loosely)be able to get $100 dollar(minus all seller fees)of his money back. I know he used MM and comped all the cards, but none of these are liquid cards, so it could go wayyyy less then some of the previously sold. I know if he was to offer all those cards to me for $100 I would turn it down because all those cards are trash.
I'm glad you blatantly said "this is not a great idea" haha.
What model camera do you use for these rips?
Only one hobby store near me, but boxes are too rich for my taste. Took a chance on a single pack of 2024 Baseball Chrome Update , pulled an auto, if I were to sell, would get half my money back. I'll keep taking my chances with Walmart or Walgreens, still affordable. I'm still buying for fun.
Do all card enthusiasts play the lucky box/pack game when buying? I always do it even though I know it doesn't change my odds of getting a hit. I found it funny seeing Geoff do the same thing.
I wonder if a walmart fruit scale could weigh blaster boxes like veggies. Not sure if that would work for ink but patches maybe.
this video was intense
Dam I was rooting for u on that pirates auto!! I was like dam 😂
This is the same thing as walking into a casino and seeing all those progressive jackpots up for grabs. This is just a different form of gambling and training your children early.
Kennedi has the prettiest hairstyle
Spending 1000 at your own store lol. I think I will buy my own 57 Aaron and Mays again.
Opening wax = priceless 😊
Wsp I’m an 11 yr old kid and I love to collect I also love your channel you inspired me and my dad we break
your dad cheats on your mom with other women
Awesome!
Called the commanders "red skins" lol. Good video, really proved what people should focuse on when getting into the hobby.
Gosh, I just remembered why I don’t enjoy watching these videos anymore. Rich person opens cards, gets disappointed, and we hear about Market Movers 20 more times. If only the hobby was still affordable.
@@ryan1982o wouldn’t pay for market movers just to check on comps, I’ll check eBay sales and common sense on pricing cards out, I will value cards based on the player and if they have autos numbered cards Ssp sps etc and I’ll price it from there and gradually lower card till it sells
Cry more
Fr
The point is moot when you own the card store.
I like the idea of market movers but isn’t worth $10 per month
That’s crazy that much money for them boxes
Ok, I love Kennedy's new hair!!!!!
This was a very interesting video. I feel like I make more on Pokemon though. Just small timing it here though lol.
Couple of them graded as a 10 (add extra to the investment cost) but get bigger returns to make up the losses.
But ive been doing very well out of blaster boxes from the local target when i find them. Hit a mosaic honeycomb courtland sutton (case hit but not crazy), a stained glass marvin harrison jr, donruss hit a silver holo jayden, and absolute hit a cj stroud kaboom. Those cards have definitely put me in the profit side for the amount of bixes ive opened thus far on 2024 football
very cool cards bro keep it up my man
You don’t buy boxes to open them. You buy them to hold and sell to someone who wants to gamble
Can I get a response on whatnot for an issue with an order? Has been a few days.
Hey I just recently turned 12 years old and when I did the first thing I thought was the best birthday present would be a auto graphed basketball card from my favorite TH-camr no pressure if you can’t get me anything but I would love if you could thanks
Should be titled “Why the industry crashed again.”
@@misterchip1984 but is it crashing?, boxes are selling out
In the last 5 yrs i decided to stop opening any boxes and keeping them factory sealed. Then buying exact cards i want. Nothing on this dudes level. I have also noticed baseball holds its value better than any other sport.
I would've bought a Mantle and been done for the day. I can always get my money back if i want and its going to go up a little bit every few years or so.
Doesn't know where the cards are in his own store? IRRESPONSIBLE!
Now grade them. or estimate 10's. How would you do?
I just did the same challenge with crypto last night and am up 51 percent today 😅
Answer = no. Now here's 35 mins of your life back
Nice pulls! Congrats
You took the L so we didn't have to.
I remember in the 60s I used to buy bobble gum wrap hockey cards and attached them to my bicycle spokes for the sound of my mustang banana seat . Cool in those days but I would kick my ass now . But hey I had fun in my younger days still 😁
Off topic here, what phone case are you using there Jeff?
Opening cards is a hustle. Big business hustle. League is making moneyof you, card makers making money you, graders making money of you and at the end you got a $1,000 in cardboard.
Tax write off expert lol
Will Levis, awesomeness from a UK fan.👊
It’s crazy that there hasn’t been a class action lawsuit at this point. It’s basically a lottery where the manufacturers control the numbers. At least with the lottery you can win money. With sports cards you just get the chance at getting a holo framed swatch of some players jock strap who will probably not even be in the league in 4 years.
The boxes are out of control in pricing due to breakers. It puts the box to a price that is dumb for an individual, while providing a logical profiteering system through breaks that keeps them coming off the shelves. If it wasn't for breaking, the market for selling boxes at these prices WOULD TANK, and prices would fall.
Can we bring the leaf blower out front?
So how are the more popular breakers pulling so many huge cards (serious question)? I am def buying more singles than going in on breaks.
Can you get gold standard for basketball?
Where can I buy a CardsHQ mat like that?
$499 for a box of cards. WOW! I been out of the collecting game since the early 90's and I can not beleive the price of some of these baseball cards. Makes it hard for some people to even buy a box of cards. Being left buying a couple packs, you really need to be lucky to score a big time hit.
$500 for a breaker's delight is the height of folly.....
More like breaker’s dismay amirite
The most ironic thing about it is you can buy the 2023 TCU breakers delight boxes for like $200
This video was probably the worst way to get people to buy boxes off your shelves tbh… u lost $900 for no reason.
Anyone catch the first pack of basketball notoriety card had an upside down back. Is that an error or how the notoriety cards are?
Fun watch. I don't get how 10 year old kids afford these boxes when I'm 34 and buying Topps Holiday Baseball Retail 😂
their parents are doctors, dentists, lawyers, and ceos
I like collecting base sets for hockey and baseball. But just like MtG just buy singles if you want investment
thanks for doing all three sports
Crazy this is what the hobby has come too lol. Instead of chasing a player you like all about profit. Really becoming a joke. 😅
PLEASE STOP CALLING SINGLE COLOR NAPKIN JERSEY CARDS, PATCH CARDS... Good grief!!!
Bro stop we need to see the patch card if we have the same one he can tell us
I’m curious to see who everybody will be pumping from the 24-25 NBA draft class to justify the price of wax.
There is nobody really
