    I've sorted this problem!!
    It's not the amp, it's the wifi router. After many hours of trying to sort it and even opening the amp to see if some grounding wire was loose, I've unplugged the router so I could connect another cd player and HEY!!! The noise was gone. Restarted the router, then 30-40 seconds later the buzzing noise was back as always. After moving the router further away, I can still barely hear the buzz, but this time it's only if I stick my ear to the tweeter, and only at high volume, above 60%.
    It seems to me that no matter how far the router is, if it's in the same room it will interfere with a digital setup

    This post is a bit more electronic oriented. The PM6006 is a great sounding amp and have repaired a few now, the problem nowadays is normally a handful stupid low quality components in critical filter sections around the DAC that cause this type of problem. On the whole the main pre and power Amp components are of good quality from my observation. I recently purchased a faulty Cambridge audio cxa80 for a bargain £90 it had a loud non adjustable quarter volume digital high frequency screech. After 3 hours diagnosis i found a 0603 size SMD Capacitor shorted to ground on the left side op amp on the DAC Board disabling 90% working of the whole amplifier. Although slightly different situation it this seems like this could be a thing these days especially with DACs. The amp works flawless now since a few replacements to future proof and have been impressed with its sound including others above in price.

      As I say, I don't want to slur the product. I have no evidence whatsoever to say that this impacts any more than a few of those manufactured.
      Having said that, given my relatively small viewership and the number of people coming back with the *identical* problem, it seems likely that this is common. I think you made the right choice. There are many other choices out there.
      Have a good trip back!

    I sent my PM 6006 to Maranz for the same problem. They told me, and they said the amplifier had no problems. Naturally, the problem was there. :) Marantz will never admit it. I had another PM 6006 in the store that I bought mine. The problem was on the other amplifier. I'm sure this is a factory defect of the whole series 6005-6006

    You are not alone.I have the same issue on my pm6006 amp, too.But weirdly that the buzz was just on my left speaker, and the right speaker was very quiet.To prove that's not the speaker's fault I swapped the cable left to right, and the noise moved to the right side.After browsing your video, I am very sure that must be the amp's issue.That made me crazy! And I am in Shanghai China I have bought it almost 1 month.

    I think it's always best to buy a separate DAC. I don't like to have digital inputs in an amplifier, because there will always be a risk of introducing noise.

    I just bought a second hand PM-6005 amp, everything sounded great until I noticed a faint buzzing on the left speaker when using the optical input. So here I am, discovering that this is a problem with the PM-6006 amp as well. A strange problem for such well-regarded amps to have! I don't have the option of returning it, so I'll just have to get used to it and hope it doesn't drive me insane.

    • @tdcattech
      @tdcattech  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s a shame. Interesting to know that this exists on the PM6005 too. It’s strange that, even with the small number of views I have, a few people have experienced this. It suggests that it’s a design flaw rather than a problem with just a few.
      However, if that’s the case, I can’t believe it’s not more well documented online.

    • @rolvares
      @rolvares 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're right, if it's a design fault, there really should be a lot more reports about this online, apart from the few cases listed here. The person I bought the amp from was also using the optical input, and said there was absolutely no noise when he was using it. And when I demoed it, I didn't notice any buzzing. So I'm still exploring the possibility that I might be doing something wrong that is causing this. I'll let you know if I ever get to the bottom of this.

    • @tdcattech
      @tdcattech  6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I just ordered a Marantz PM6006 so this concerns me. I did see in an online manual the following note: "Do not input non-PCM signals, such as DTS and AAC. This causes noise and could damage the speakers." I wonder if that is an issue. I will check that out when mine arrives. Thanks for making the video.

I am very happy with it so far. However, regarding sound quality I have a bit of work to do, but that is not because of the amplifier or speakers. My living room has the acoustics of a racquetball court. The sound is a bit sharp. Again, I can't blame that on the sound system for that, but I also don't have a true measure of its performance yet..

    Thx for sharing.
    I own a Marantz m-cr612. Purchased in 2020.
    Optical input has failed, the light bar thing on the front flickers on and off, as if there is an issue with the power board, and there is randomly no audio output from dab,fm radio even though the on screen volume increases/ decreases.
    On a plus note the inbuilt cd players works perfectly and outputs audio.
    I'm glad I found my original receipt from 2020 as I plan to take it back tomorrow.
    I was looking into the Marantz 6006 but going from your experience and my own I might just give this brand a miss going forwards.

      I have the M-CR611. It is extremely temperamental. Every couple of weeks or so all the network features stop working, plus, bizarrely, USB playback. CD and DAB radio still work. The only way to get everything working properly again is to do a complete factory reset. It's easy enough to do from the unit's "general" menu. There's also a manual way of doing it. Once done it's fine again for another few weeks.
      That said the Bluetooth no longer seems to work at all on it. Bit annoying but it's a feature I don't really have much use for anyway.

      @@peterfitton4529 yeah, plenty of times..
      There was in internal fault with one of the boards and it would have to go back to Marantz for repairs. Originally I thought it had a 3yr warranty but it was 2 years, it was 2yrs 3 months old when the fault appeared. I didn't want to send it back and throw any money at it (I was gutted ) and came to terms with it and it ended up as recycled scrap.
      I then picked up a Marantz Pm6007 amp (which has just been replaced with an AudioLab 6000A) I like the sound output from the AL souch nicer, the Marantz sounded like it had exaggerated lower/base and the same at the top end.

Sligtly more lower bass but less airy treble. Also tried a Pioneer A-30. Silent trafo, no noise whatsoever, really a more than exemplary build quality for the money but sadly a rather mechanical-as-in-boring sounding amp.

    I took a Cambridge Topaz AM1 back to Richer Sounds because of Transformer hum louder than speaker hum in the video. Rather than going (way!) up market like you I decided to go down market and try some class D chi fi. I'm experimenting with a
    Nobsound amp at the moment and it does produce good sound, through my Wharfedale 9 speakers, way better than my logitech Z130 computer speakers, same ball part as Ruark MR1 MC2 at a quarter of the price & with more inputs. BUT the nobsound amp also has some speaker hum... though not as bad as the Marantz. I've ordered the chi fi amp with best reputation for "no hum". If that doesn't work out, I might go back to "UK fi". The Tangent Amplifier BT II looks interesting.... Anyway, surely some amp at the low end doesn't hum?!

    Hello, with some guidance I have resolved the issue!
    I took delivery today 26th November 2019. Immediately I noticed the hum on all sources which was much, much louder in the Phono input.
    Nathan from the helpdesk of Sevenoaks Audio Visual helped me to sort it out. He told me that this is to do with the grounding of the amp. So I took a piece of wire and connected it to the grounding post of my Rega turntable to a casement screw on my Marantz NA6005 network player. Presto, the hum on the speakers on the phono input and all other inputs was resolved!
    I hope this helps....

    The only time i can hear noise on digital input is when you turn the volume to max then the slight noise is audible otherwise you have to put your ear right next to the tweeter to hear it. And both speakers produre identical noise. I guess on full volume its normal to hear noise you would never listen to full volume anyways. Hi I have just bought PM6006 and discovered exactly the same issue or fault with noise from optical input or DAC. I also tried DVD player connect to amp by optical cable and it was the same so it is an amp fault not a source device. And when I switch to phono input it is like I sit next to Niagara waterfall. I dont mind it as much as noise from digital inputs as I prefer digital music but still. I dont know if this is common property of most amplifiers but I dont like it at all. And I am glad that I am not the only one. I would not expect this noise from any amplifier. It is a shame that you can find it on such known brand. Before I bought new Onkyo A-9150 and it has similar issue or property. You could hear noise from trafo. So what the hell it is. Why would I buy amplifier that generate noise even without music. I am dissapointed. So many positive reviews on What HiFi and from other different sources. Do I have to buy amplifier for 2.000,- EUR to be quiet and work properly or what. I would not recommend PM6006 to anyone who is looking for good amplifier. It looks that PM6005 will have the same annyoing characteristic. But I woud call it fault more than characteristic to be honest. The sound is maybe fine but the noise from digital inputs makes me change opinion that the product is good in general. I hope I can give it back and replace it for something else.

    • @tdcattech
      @tdcattech  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks and great (not great for you) to know that I'm not alone in this issue.
      I would say more noise on phono is pretty common as it's not a line level input so is much more subject to more noise. However, the digital input noise it strange. Like you, I was shocked by this given the sheer number of amazing reviews this amp gets. That's why I assume this is a unit fault rather than a design fault.
      I'd really like to hear from anyone who uses this amp and loves it! Problem is, they probably won't find this video! :) I went down the M-DAC+ route and am extremely happy. Pricey but none of these issues. Quick video on that coming up this evening.

    I have this on my 6005 in the right channel, digital in only.
