Thanks for reppin' Canada, Simu! Also, Thanks for reppin a strong asian male type in the Film/TV industry! It's inspiring to other Can-Asians like me starting out in the Canadian Film/TV/Digital business! You're great on Kim's Convenience and hopefully I'll get to work with you, one day!
Toronto is clean ?? Bruh if Toronto is clean to others I'm kinda concerned. Don't get me wrong I think Toronto is clean but some places I go i see a lot of trash
When Simu talks about his work, you can tell he's very passionate and also committed. He seems like a solid, level headed and also hugely charismatic guy.
I'm Canadian and love Tim Hortons, not a big fan of hockey or curling, try to be polite to everyone, know all of the provinces, territories and their capitals, lock my house door, own multiple winter coats and mittens, eat poutine, don't follow politics, don't litter and will always be a Wong Fu Fan.
I wish they spoke more about the Asian-Canadian experience more considering that they compose nearly 20% of the country's population- way more than the U.S.' 7%.
It depends on where you live. Most of asians live in big cities, namely Toronto, Vancouver, and Calgary, so the experience will be different if you live in rural parts of Canada.
As someone who doesn’t live in neither of the two countries I actually gained a lot of knowledge about both countries through watching this video.. And I just love how knowledgeable and observant Simu is.. Also I really love the way he talk and explain to us, I could listen to him all day
Best Tim Hortons commercials are the ones with heart. I still get weepy watching some of them. I love the one with the Chinese-Canadian son playing hockey, and the one where a man managed to bring his family to Canada.
The one city that should be more love is Edmonton dude! (Edmonton representative here!) Everyone knows about Calgary but us in Edmonton, we're basically the shadow and ghost even though we're the capital city of Alberta. Sure we basically only have WEM, but still, NO ONE TALKS ABOUT US AND IT SUCKS! So proud of Phil tho because he actually knows we exist ;-; Pls come here...no one ever visit us and it's sad ;( ...Also! Another constant battle here in Canada is Edmonton vs Calgary for obvious reasons, Edmonton is butt hurt on how Calgary gets all the spotlight XD ALSO! it's funny how Americans find Canada so cold while I'm over here finding it all normal lol. (Minus the fact that we JUST got rid of the snow -.-) Thanks Simu for representing us Canadians! Canada rules!
yes! please come to Vancouver!! I grew up wishing I could attend one of your events. I'm such a big fan! Also Kim's Convenience is a great show! So proud a show about an Asian family is so popular and not just with Asians! Props to Simu!
Ya shout out to Calgary!! I don’t live there anymore but I will in few months!!! If anyone decides to come to Alberta, come visit our national park. I live in Jasper at the moment , my profile pic is one of the mountains, just edited with bunch of filters... but it’s beautiful here!!
YAS! As a Calgarian girl, I gotta say Calgary needs more love as a Canadian city. We always get overlooked because of Vancouver and Toronto, but we got our cute little perks. Canadians represent!! Also, Tim Hortons definitely beats Starbucks...
Such a great watch. I'm a Vancouverite who's been living in Australia for the past 2 years so anything mentioning Canada makes me so happy! Missing poutine and Tim Horton's ice capps. Please add the land down under to your "to visit" list!!
I can't wait to go to Canada this summer. Thanks Simu Liu for letting me know what to eat and drink when I get there. :) I can't wait to try Tim Hortons and Poutine. :)
As someone who lives in Calgary I appreciate the shout out. We have a big modern city and drive just a little outside the city and we have the Rocky Mountains. Best of both worlds 👍
You already know I gotta shout out the 6ix!! Toronto!! Yes, Phil, you need to come back here. 2016 TIFF wasn't long enough and you need to bring the team. Kim's Convenience is so huge as a show that speaks to an Asian experience, but Simu is right, it also speaks to situations to which other immigrant families relate. That's why it's such a hit here. We make trips to the shop location which is in Toronto almost like it's a Mecca. As far as Tim Horton's vs Starbucks, we have both, but there's something inherently Canadian about a double-double and the fact that the chain is named after a hockey player. Hockey parents drop by to nab some Tim Horton's before heading to those early-morning practice sessions. My family moved from California to Ontario in 1991 so I've experienced the contrast. In true Asian-Canadian fashion, I quit piano lessons to play hockey. I still play both. Simu Liu you do us proud!! Thanks for sharing during this Lunch Break.
I’m from Toronto, more specifically Scarborough, I gotta lock my doors there tho cuz it’s not super safe. But I think you guys should totally come back. The weathers been nice lately even tho a few weeks ago we had that ice storm, it’s like 20 degrees today. And Tim Hortons everyday man.
Whether you're in Scarbz or not, you should lock your doors along with an alarm system and maybe even surveillance cameras. xD No where is really safe anymore and you literally can't trust anyone. :/
When you said Scarborough I was like, Say less fam loooool. But yeah it depends where in Toronto. I mean downtown and South Etobicoke are pretty safe. But Rexdale, North York, and Scarborough are another matter
I also live in Scarborough, it’s pretty safe even though I got robbed lol, at least the police caught the robber. Still lock your door, if you don’t then don’t sweat it
"I think a lot of your fans are from Canada, I think they want to hear from you some sort of pledge that you'll visit them at some point because I'm sure that they miss you guys". Passive Aggressively ---> "You should meet your fanbase in Canada!!!!!"
Costco has poutine?? Can I lie my way in or will those elitist gatekeepers throw my peasant ass out? I'd do anything for a cheap box of poutine and some squeaky cheese curds~
Yesss please come to Calgary!! Thanks for mentioning us, I really do think this city deserves more love. It does get pretty cold here though and our weather is really unpredictable, but you won't get frostbite if you just wear proper clothing lmao. In summer it's actually relatively warm! 😊
Wow Simu is very well spoken, I'm so impressed. I must say tho, as a fellow Canadian, Timmie's coffee just doesn't do it for me any more no matter how many creams, milks or sugars you'd try to put in. On a real note McDonalds coffee got that good ish. Tim Horton's does have good commercials, so whoever taking care of that end is doing a great job. Really love the collabs with Simu! Y'all get along so well.
You also have loads of fans all the way from east(China). Simu, just finished your Kim’s convenience, such a warm TV show, hope to see more of your shows.
Tracy Wan yup. Target screwed up their logistics when they opened in Canada and couldn't get restock items. I noticed they used old stock from the US stores when travelling back and forth. I miss Zellers lol.
i disagree Phil, Toronto and Vancouver do not have same weather :P Vancouver definitely has better weather)) (i lived in Toronto and now live in Victoria, BC..but the weather here is very similar to Vancouver). So we can still say "the weather is better here" :P And totally agree what Simu said towards the end about multiculturalism and stuff ^_^ Racism is not a thing here...and most definitely is NOT tolerated.. :)
Come on, racism is everywhere. We can't pretend we are superior in that respect. It's a bit invalidating to people who suffer racism here. But thankfully you're right, generally it is not tolerated. I'd like to think we look out for each other and try to stop episodes of racist hatred when we see them.
@JUSTINE MCINTOSH From a global standpoint, yes there is quite a bit of resentment against Asians in "liberal places" like LA, the Bay Area, Vancouver, Melbourne, and Greater Toronto Area....just because ppl might have a politically correct front doesn't mean there isn't passive resentment & crazy segregation in those areas. I think it's more of a global phenomena regarding certain cities/regions opposed to country specific.
@imaprouduclabruin If there is resentment against Asians regarding the real estate phenomena, then there is a history of that in the San Gabriel Valley within Metro LA. I absolutely love what Simu has contributed with his professional work...and I'm sure he means well but to say that all of America tends to not embrace "other cultures" just because he's likely only been in LA/NYC doesn't mean the remainder of the country is a direct reflection of those two coastal powerhouse cities. I don't know as much about LA despite having relatives there but used to live in NYC which I absolutely love. I think the show Boardwalk Empire describes the history of that racial tension best with the Jews, Irish, Blacks, Southern Italians, Chinese and Anglos all fighting for leverage while living side by side in tight quarters only exacerbated things. Sadly, you can still feel that in modern day NYC in buroughs especially such as Queens & Brooklyn
Lol when Phil brought up how Wes said he had the best sashimi in Vancouver. I actually remember when Wongfu came to Vancouver (I think to UBC) in 2007 and that was what were saying then too. "You guys have really good sushi and salmon sashimi!" I love how 11 years later, Wes still thinks about it :P
for fellow canadians.. a great way to stay in the know about canadian politics is through podcasts like canadaland commons and huffpost canada's follow-up!
Huffington Post during the last election became Liberal version of the Sun. The Liberal bias was so strong that it became nauseating to read. Then again most media outlets I think showed stronger biases during the election.
Hello from Ja-na-da! Lol. Simu looks so done with the Canadian questions… Hope wongfu can visit soon, then you can find out for yourselves what it is really like!
Thanks for repping Canada ♥ much love from Calgary!!! Thanks for mentioning us ♥ (WongFu please come visit us again soon) - Also visit Banff, and try out the hot springs and check out the lakes is Jasper (talking to Wes especially)
Don't forget your fans in Winnipeg! Lots of Wong Fu fans here and it's nice in the summer. You could challenge yourself to come in the winter, but we're talking temperatures around 40 F... ... below 0.
ahhhh so excited to see simu on yappie, he seems like such an awesome dude and CANADA REPRESENT! also wongfu yes pls come to canadaaaaa i will buy u all poutine!!! :)
Love that Simu brings to the forefront struggles of Asian American and racism here vs. that in Canada. While ,Wongfu, you are putting out great content and featuring Asian American talent wonderfully, you're not taking your platform and talking about these issues with your audiences. You've touched on whitewashing in Hollywood movies but don't discuss the root of that and in other areas. Maybe it is time to bring conversation and other content on racism, diversity and struggles in the very fabric of Asian American lives on your channel.
It took me so long as a kid to realize that Timbits were the holes cut out from the regular doughnuts, repurposed into perfect bite-size fun. Also, we do need that pledge to return. Your fanbase in Vancouver is huge!!
I am ... on my AP grind snack break! You guys should do a Lunch Break on your high school studies and standardized testing because we are all in need of some advice xD
Thanks for mentioning Calgary. I didn't get a chance to go to Wong Fu meet when they came years ago, but I did watch the behind the scenes of them going around UofC campus. Come to Calgary during spring or summer, we are the city with the most sunshine in all of Canada. We are actually known for patio weather and craft beers. In winter we also get the chinook, it melts the snow and can create temperatures above 0 degrees Celsius. Got to agree with other commenters on timmies though, haven't visited one in ages especially learning it was bought by multinational conglomerate. Try second cup instead for coffee. Or new York fries for poutine.
OK guys I have to add on here because I forgot to share so many amazing things about Canada (too distracted with the poutine talk!)!!

Not often you get the mountains, rivers and lakes (not the Great Lakes though...) and the ocean at one spot Vancouver!!!
I live in Ontario, and the fact that you said Toronto is clean... concerns me about how dirty LA is
Cat Bat I live in Toronto and I had to step out to realize that is RELATIVELY clean
Naw for real the air there is horrid

Alexandra M everything is the exact same for me except for the multiple winter coats and mittens.
Vancouver is basically like Bay Area/Seattle with weather. Very temperate. Toronto goes through extremes. Cold winters hot summers
Danny Choi Culture wise, i'd say Vancouver is more like any large western american city as well
Excellent comparison
Been saying that for years.
Saw the video title and got excited! Representing Canada! Woohoo! Can't wait to finish watching this Lunch Break. :)

Got to agree with other commenters on timmies though, haven't visited one in ages especially learning it was bought by multinational conglomerate. Try second cup instead for coffee. Or new York fries for poutine.
